Pique Dame - Queen of Spades - Hermann's aria, act 1

Tchaikovsy. Queen of Spades. Sung by Alexander Davidov, approx. in 1910. Translation: (Hermann to Lisa): Forgive me, heavenly creature For disturbing your peace. Forgive me, but don't deny this passionate confession, Don't deny it with grief. Oh take pity on me, I am dying and bringing you my pleading, Look down from heavenly heights At deathly fight of a soul tormented by love for you. Oh take pity and warm up my spirit with your caress and tears... ...You are crying! You... What do these tears mean? You're not turning me away, you feel sorry for me... Thank you, thank you, Beauty, goddess, angel!

Pique Dame - Queen of Spades - Hermann's aria, act 3

Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky. The Queen of Spades. Hermann's aria, sung in Russian by Alexander Davidov. Translation: What is our life? A game! Good and evil are just dreams, Work and honesty are foolish tales. Who is right, who is happy here, my friends? Today it's your turn, tomorrow it's mine, So leave the fight, catch the moment of luck, Let the loser cry, cursing his fate! What is real? Only death is! Like the shore of the sea of futility, It's our refuge. Who of us does it like best, my friends? Today it's your turn, tomorrow it's mine, So leave the fight, catch the moment of luck, Let the loser cry, cursing his fate!

Janina Korolewicz-Waydowa. Sad song

Janina Korolewicz-Waydowa (1875-1955), also known as Janina Korolewicz-Wayda and Gianinna Wayda, was born in Warsaw and studied singing with the famous teacher Walery Wysocki. She made her debut in 1893 as Hanna in Moniuszko's "Haunted castle" and as a young artist sang mostly coloratura roles including Amina, Gilda, Rosina and Dinorah but as her voice developed she undertook the dramatic soprano repertoire singing Rachel, Elisabeth (Tannhauser) and even Brunnhilde. She sang in many of the great opera houses of Europe and America and was chosen by Nellie Melba to join a company which also included John McCormack to tour Australia in 1911, where her success incurred the jealousy of the older prima donna. From 1917 to 1919 she was the manager of the Warsaw Opera House. Sad song, sung in Polish. Composer: Zarzycki.

Maria Gay. Mon coeur s'ouvre a ta voix

Aria from "Samson and Dalila" by Saint-Saens. Biographical note from Wikipedia: Maria Gay (13 June 1879 - 20 July 1943) was a Catalan opera singer, a mezzo-soprano born as Maria de Lourdes Lucia Antonia Pichot Gironés. She has sometimes been referred to as Maria Gay Zenatello. According to one story, young Maria was arrested for singing revolutionary or nationalist songs. She defiantly continued to sing them in prison, with a voice so fine she was offered a chance to study bel canto. She was a singing pupil of soprano Ada Adini. In 1897 she married Catalan composer Joan Gay i Planella. In 1902 she debuted in the title role of Carmen in Brussels. She was a hit in the role and became one of the best regarded interpreters of "Carmen" of her era. n 1906 she debuted at Milan's La Scala, where she met tenor Giovanni Zenatello. Gay and Zenatello would live together the rest of their lives, and were often described as husband and wife, although they may never actually have gotten married, and legally Maria Gay may still have been married to Juan Gay Planella until his death in 1926. In 1910 she made her debut with the Boston Opera Company as Carmen. She made a series of gramophone records for the Columbia Phonograph Company. Gay and Zenatello worked to find, help train, and promote promising young singers. Their most famous find was Lily Pons.
