Anyone serious about acoustic guitar lessons should take a look at the Travis style of picking and incorporate it into their playing, even if they want to play the blues in a different style. Here, we take a look at those 'fiddly bits' that appear in Doc's rendition of Deep River. These are the little things that suddenly appear and blow us away with their magic, such as double thumb beats and added syncopation with thumb combination strokes. It's even more interesting when you consider that Doc (like other great masters such as Gary Davis, Broonzy,Hopkins) used just one finger on his picking hand to achieve these results. I hope you enjoy it - come back again! Tupelo by John Lee Hooker

Great Blues Man, Great Blues Music. "John Lee Hooker was an influential American post-war blues singer, guitarist, and songwriter born in Coahoma County near Clarksdale, Mississippi. From a musical family, he was a cousin of Earl Hooker. John was also influenced by his stepfather, a local blues guitarist, who learned in Shreveport, Louisiana to play a droning, one-chord blues that was strikingly different from the Delta blues of the time. John developed a half-spoken style that was his trademark. Though, similar to the early Delta blues, his music was rhythmically free. His best known songs include "Boogie Chillen" (1948) and "Boom Boom" (1962)"

The Old School - Delta Blues - Muddy Waters/Robert Johnson

"The Old School" was composed by Bob Margolin who played guitar in Muddy Waters' band in the late 70ties. The song tells about the relationship between Bob and his "professor or slave-driving teacher" Muddy. When the young Bob joined the band all the instruction he got from Muddy was :"just watch me and learn" Bob sure learned as he's one of America's top bluesmen now. The song is in open G or Spanish and reflects Muddy's older material. I'm teaching this song in the following three lesson video's jp.youtube.com jp.youtube.com jp.youtube.com FREE TABLATURE FOR THESE LESSONS IF YOUR ORDER THE SLIDE LESSON DVD BELOW!! or available at my website www.daddystovepipe.com cost €7.5 and you get tab for Blue Paloma (the next step up in Delta slide playing) as a bonus! Charley Patton - Spoonful Blues (Delta Blues 1929)

Charley Patton - Spoonful Blues A song about cocaine Charlie Patton born Mississippi, April 1891 was an experienced performer of songs before he was twenty years old and was first recorded (Thankfully) in 1929. His influence is everywhere and was arguably the first of the greats. An influence on Son House, Tommy Johnson, Bukka White and without doubt Howlin' Wolf. We have to thank archivists, the likes of Harry Smith, that we can hear these inimitable songs today. Delta Blues by Ted Gioia

The blues grew out of the plantations and prisons, the swampy marshes and fertile cotton fields of the Mississippi Delta. With original research and keen insights, Ted Gioia, the author of a landmark study of West Coast jazz and the critically acclaimed The History of Jazz brings to life the stirring music of the Delta, evoking the legendary figures who shaped its sound and ethos: Robert Johnson, Charley Patton, Muddy Waters, John Lee Hooker, Howlin' Wolf, BB King, and others. Tracing the history of the Delta blues from the field hollers and plantation music of the nineteenth century to the exploits of modern-day musicians in the Delta tradition, Delta Blues tells the full story of this timeless and unforgettable music. No cultural force boasts such humble origins or such world-conquering reverberations. In this evocative rags-to-riches tale, Gioia shows how the sounds of the Delta altered the course of popular music in America and in the world beyond.

Canned Heat Blues - Mississippi Delta blues - Tommy Johnson

Tommy Johnson recorded this song in 1928. The words must be understood in the context of the Prohibition. With the sale of liquor outlawed, many men like Johnson, who were accustomed to drinking, turned to cheap and still legal substitutes - more or less anything that contained alcohol. Sterno, a cooking fuel called "canned heat", was one of the most common of these substances. How many people it killed or crippled with the 'jake leg' we may never know, but these unexpected side effects of the 'Great Experiment' were felt most severely by blacks, who clould not affordto buy the more expensive bootleg liquor, particularly during the Depression when there was mass unemployment. Although the Prohibition amendment was repealed not long after Johnson's song was recorded, its effects continued to be felt in Mississippi. Archaic members of that state's legislature voted to keep Mississippi dry. Thus Tommy Johnson and many others were faced with the problem of ruined health throughout their lives (source : "Tommy Johnson" by David Evans - Studio Vista Books 1971) His brother Mager told writer David Evans : He believed in drinking. He loved that canned heat. He's the first fellow I ever heard tell of drinking canned heat. And he drank so much of it, he said he was going to put him out a record about the canned heat. That canned heat, you know, it was red. It was in those little okd cans. When you open it, take the top off the can. He'd strike hem a match and burn it, burn the top ...

Delta Blues Guitar Lesson "Black Mattie" RL Burnside MDBG Masters of Delta Blues Guitar

(November 23, 1926 -- September 1, 2005), born Robert Lee Burnside, was a North Mississippi hill country blues singer, songwriter, and guitarist who lived much of his life in and around Holly Springs, Mississippi. He played music for much of his life, but did not receive much attention until the early 1990s. In the latter half of the 1990s, Burnside repeatedly recorded with Jon Spencer, garnering crossover appeal and introducing his music to a new fanbase within the underground garage rock scene. Burnside was born in Harmontown, Mississippi, in Lafayette County. He spent most of his life in North Mississippi, working as a sharecropper and a commercial fisherman, as well as playing guitar at weekend house parties. He was first inspired to pick up the guitar in his early twenties, after hearing the 1948 John Lee Hooker single, "Boogie Chillen" (which inspired numerous other rural bluesmen, among them Buddy Guy, to start playing). He learned music largely from Mississippi Fred McDowell, who lived nearby in an adjoining county. He also cited his cousin-in-law, Muddy Waters, as an influence.

Delta Blues - Nigeria

February 2010 It seemed peace was to come to the Niger Delta but the fighting and oil sabotage has resumed. A powerful report filmed before the amnesty but with many participants sceptical the world remains as pertinent as ever. A fisherman pulls an empty net from waters that have sustained his family for generations, Because of oil spillage we cant get fish to sustain ourselves, let alone to sell. Despite the huge oil industry 90% of locals are unemployed. Frustration led many to fight, decimating Nigeria's oil output. Now policy is being scrutinised - senior officials question the lack of development in the Niger Delta; The way the oil companies have acted thus far is a little irresponsible. An amnesty was offered to militants willing to disarm. Some accepted but many were sceptical; Amnesty will not disarm the Niger Delta. It will only quell it. Delta Blues Slide Guitar Instrumental - Blue Paloma

Just trying out my new "Paloma" stone ceramic slide - I'm really satisfied with this one - smooth sliding, great sustain and perfect fit (looks cool too) Check'm out www.stoneslides.com I did a series of 4 lessons, explaining the tablature; here's the link to the first lesson (in the description of that lesson you'll find the link to the second lesson etc) www.youtube.com TAB available at www.daddystovepipe.com Only €7.50 and you get the tab for "The Old School" free as a bonus Here's the link to that song http I'm playing a "Delta Resonator" (Louisiana model) made in the UK by John Alderson. This song is not an easy one, the right hand techniques are pretty advanced. My slide lesson dvd explains many of these techniques in great detail. Three songs are taught : - Walkin' Blues in the style of Robert Johnson and Johnny Shines - Joe Turner Killed A Man in thestyle of Mance Lipscomb - Someday Baby Blues in the style of Mississippi Fred McDowell Here's the link www.youtuberecords.com I did some easier delta blues slide lessons in the past. Delta Blues Lesson: High Water Everywhere Pt. 1 by Charley Patton

An instructional video on how to play Charlie Patton's song which is similar to songs like Jinx Blues, Big Road Blues, Revenue Man, Love My Stuff and Future Blues. I noticed there's only one other Charlie Patton lesson on Youtube so hopefully this can help spread a little bit of knowledge. (Sorry for the excessive talking...I tried to be detailed but in some moments I was a redundant) Check out my website for more Delta Blues lessons and discussion: www.deltabluesguy.blogspot.ca Here's the original recording: www.youtube.com

Delta Blues Guitar Lesson - Free TAB - Canned Heat Blues/Tommy Johnson Part 1

In this lesson I teach you the introduction to the song. I will upload three more lessons teaching : - the guitar accompaniment behind the singing Part 2 www.youtube.com - an instrumental version of intermediate to advanced playing for those who hate singing; lotsa variations and ideas from other bluesgreats like Lonnie Johnson and Scrapper Blackwell. Parts 3 and 4 www.youtube.com www.youtube.com This song is a mixture of fingerpicking and strumming. So by working with this kind of material you will learn to "unlock" your right hand - the most important hand in delta blues playing - it's the right hand that makes the difference (everybody can do the left hand, it's just placing your fingers on the right frets) Note that I'm teaching my version of the song, it's not a "historical copy"; you can hear it in full here www.youtube.com and also read about the history behind the song. The original version by Tommy Johnson www.youtube.com FREE TABLATURE for the intro and verse at my website www.daddystovepipe.com I also tabbed out the complete instrumental version (4 pages); cost €7.5 (about $10). There's a "buy now" button at above website that leads you to Paypal.
