Demessieux Te Deum played by Hugh Potton

Hugh Potton is one of the leading exponents of 20th Century French organ music. He has a remarkable capacity of memorisation and performs the whole repertoire without reference to a score. Sadly the camera microphone with automatic volume control does not capture crescendos and the raw power of the piece and this superb 5 manual organ. Live performances are so much better to hear - but Hugh is worth seeing as well as hearing! Sadly Jeanne Demessieux died in her 40s from cancer but her music lives on in performers of such vituosity. Kölner Dom - Pipe Organ - Cologne Cathedral

The majestic Te Deum of Jeanne Demessieux, recorded in 1980 by the cathedral organist, Josef Zimmermann. The instrument is the IV/86 Transept Organ, built in 1948 by Klais & updated & expanded intermittently over the following 12 years. In the late 1990's the organ was "re-organized" (no pun intended) & raised about 2 meters to project more sound into this immense room. And in 1998, a III/53 "swallow's nest" organ was installed in the nave -- turning a superb instrument into an amazing one that can generate a virtual avalanche of sound.

Liszt - Funerailles (Pierre Labric on the organ of Saint-Ouen, Rouen)

A stupendous performance of Funérailles, a huge piano piece (the seventh of the 'Harmonies poétiques et religieuses') by Franz Liszt (as transcribed by Jeanne Demessieux [1921-1968], titular organist of la Madeleine in Paris) by Demessieux's pupil Pierre Labric on the equally stupendous 1890 Aristide Cavaillé-Coll Grand Organ (IV/P/64ss) in the former Abbey Church of Saint Ouen, Rouen (Upper Normandy). Marcel Dupré - Poème Héroique, op. 33

Marcel Dupré (3 May 1886 - 30 May 1971), was a French organist, pianist, composer, and pedagogue. Marcel Dupré was born in Rouen (Normandy, France). Born into a musical family, he was a child prodigy. His father Albert Dupré was organist in Rouen and a friend of Aristide Cavaillé-Coll, who built an organ in the family house when Marcel was 14 years old. Dupré entered the Paris Conservatoire in 1904, where he studied with Louis Diémer and Lazare Lévy (piano), Alexandre Guilmant and Louis Vierne (organ), and Charles-Marie Widor (composition). In 1914, Dupré won the Grand Prix de Rome for his cantata, Psyché. In 1926, he was appointed professor of organ performance and improvisation at the Paris Conservatoire, a position he held until 1954. Dupré became famous for performing more than 2000 organ recitals throughout Australia, the United States, Canada and Europe, which included a recital series of 10 concerts of the complete works of Johann Sebastian Bach in 1920 (Paris Conservatoire) and 1921 (Palais du Trocadéro), both performed entirely from memory. The sponsorship of an American transcontinental tour by the John Wanamaker department store interests rocketed his name into international prominence. Dupré's "Symphonie-Passion" began as an improvisation on Philadelphia's Wanamaker Organ. In 1934, Dupré succeeded Charles-Marie Widor as titular organist at St. Sulpice in Paris, a post he held until his death in 1971. From 1947-1954, he was director of the American Conservatory ...

1812 overture for organ accompanied by 1000 balloon globota

Was this substitute for real cannon too mad? It's difficult to find a good transcription of the 1812 Overture but this one is a little fun even if Hugh didn't find the stop for the bells. A good excuse to do it again! A group of organ builders has taken exception to this performance on the grounds that they fear that we will "hasten the demise of pipe organ music as a serious art". However, when after a long and serious performance with items of considerably heavier weight than are often presented at organ recitals a most sober headmaster comments: "Congratulations on an excellent concert yesterday. Nicely informal but with some excellent organ music and the bangs livened up a tired 7 year old and saw him away enthusiastically", we know that we are on the right track. So please sit back and let this madness entertain! The explosions were fun and a little unconventional - the audio recording is more spectacular to hear www.jungleboffin.com than this poor video representation - and enjoyed by everyone in this otherwise serious recital including Vierne II www.youtube.com where the organ showed its full colours. The apparent buffoonery here is part of a series of concerts featuring the most profound of French romantic repertoire and is intended to bring a sense of fun into a world which can take itself altogether too seriously. If you do download the MP3 please do beware the bangs - they were serious (although they should have been better) this was no balloons at a childrens ...
