Very Hot Stuff - Barbara Dennerlein on Hammond B3 Organ

Seeing is believing. It looks impossible, but it's true, Barbara Dennerlein plays bass lines with her left foot that I couldn't play with my left hand. Unlike many organists, she did not begin with piano. When she was 11 years old she began playing organ, including the use of the foot pedals. She took lessons for a year and a half from a teacher who played jazz himself. By the time she was 13 she was completely on her own in regard to her musical development. Charlie Parker was her musical hero and biggest influence. While she respects Jimmy Smith's musicianship and his enormous contribution to jazz organ, she did not model her playing, sound, technique or musical approach after his. Like Jimmy, she developed her own personal style and unmistakable sound. Her artistic sensibilities are closer to Larry Young than Jimmy Smith, but they are still very much her own. In the 80's Jimmy Smith briefly moved from Hammond B3 to another make of organ, experimented with synthesizers and even played electric piano. In the 80's Barbara also began to experiment, but she took a different approach. She integrated midi technology into her B3 keyboard and sampled an upright bass to give her bass pedals a more realistic sound. This video is one small glimpse into her musical world, I hope you'll view the other clips on my channel, and enjoy clips by other great B3 players. My hope is that music is enjoyed as a celebration, and not a competition - it's art not sport. Barbara Dennerlein ...

Barbara Dennerlein & Rhoda Scott on Hammond B3 Organ

Can you handle this much organ? We are used to guitarists like Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, or Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes mixing it up, but Rhoda Scott and Barbara Dennerlein prove that instrumental music isn't just a man's world. This impromptu performance took place in Switzerland in 2002 at the Bern Jazz Festival, bringing together two legends of the Hammond B3 Organ - the 5 time Downbeat Critics Poll Winner Barbara Dennerlein and the great Soul Jazz artist Rhoda Scott, aka "Barefoot Lady" - called a very great virtuoso by Arthur Rubinstein. For Dennerlein fans this is a bit unusual, because Barbara isn't playing pedal bass. This number "Nova" was composed by Rhoda, an accomplished pedal bass player herself, so she provides the bass lines. Not only are they smoking hot soloists, but check out the great interplay, harmonics, and accompaniment.

Jimmy's Walk - Barbara Dennerlein on Hammond B3

Barbara Dennerlein videos have now passed the 1000000 views mark on YouTube. This video is a thank you to all jazz, organ, and Barbara Dennerlein fans who have helped to spread the word. As many of you know, this title was written by Barbara and dedicated to the late great Jimmy Smith. Although her playing was not influenced by Jimmy Smith, like all jazz lovers she is grateful to him for his contribution to organ jazz - his approach to soloing made modern jazz organ possible - during her concerts she often mentions this fact and praises Jimmy Smith. Barbara and Jimmy first met when she was only 15 years old. She took part in an organ competition and Jimmy Smith was one of the judges. In an interview she described their first meeting: BD: "I sat down and played something different, "On the Sunny Side of the Street" and suddenly I noticed someone came from behind me and he took my hair, I had very long hair, much longer than now, and he put it to the side, and then he sat down and he played with me. [laughs] So really, it was great. AAJ: And you weren't expecting it at all? BD: No, it was incredible of course, wonderful. And then people were so shocked about their decision—he played with me, the second place finalist. The third place finalist didn't even play again after that! [laughs] It was really funny, and afterwards we stayed in contact. And it was really nice, until he started to see me as a competitor." Barbara still has great respect for Jimmy Smith's contribution ...

Jazz Version of "Satisfaction" Barbara Dennerlein on B3

Hammond B3 Organ Jazz, Barbara Dennerlein and her drummer Marcel Gustke have some fun with the Rolling Stones monster hit "Satisfaction". Jimmy Smith also recorded this song, it is interesting to compare the two versions which are quite different. Barbara was less than a year old when the Stones had their first #1 in June 1965 with Satisfaction. This is a private video used with the artist's permission. Because there aren't a lot of close shots of her playing (watch other videos for that) I decided to have some fun with it and explore the theme of the song - using some public domain commercials from the 60's and a few YouTube images to recreate a 60's feel. Because of the 100 mb limit I had to edit out a little bit - please have some fun, don't take it too seriously - if not, to quote Mick, "Hey you, get off of my cloud!"

The intensive involvement of the organist with the entire recording process -- she personally did all the editing and mixing in her personal recording studio with the painstaking and meticulous care she is known for -- resulted in a recording that is a special treasure in both musical and technical sound aspects. The interaction between the three musicians (sounding like a quartet with Barbara's mastery of the footpedals) is inspired and confident ...a musical dream-team. On her new CD Barbara Dennerlein presents nine originals in a wide range of styles. She is accompanied by Peter Lehel (sax) and Marcel Gustke (dr). 3 Nights in Tunisia - Diz, Jimmy Smith, Barbara Dennerlein

Three masters, Dizzy Gillespie, Jimmy Smith, and Barbara Dennerlein performing a bebop masterpiece. Dizzy wrote this piece in 1942 and back in the day at the apex of his career musicians like Miles Davis sat wide eyed and slack jawed in the front row as Dizzy unleashed powerful solos. With age he continued to play Night in Tunisia, but used rhythm and arrangements to compensate for the gradual loss of power, an absolute giant in the pantheon of jazz, and an extraordinary human being. The clip of Jimmy Smith is from 1986, thanks to YouTuber Imesan from Japan for uploading it. Nearly everyone knows and loves Jimmy Smith, the person who introduced the world to jazz played on the Hammond B3. Another absolute jazz icon. The final clip is of a very young (23) Barbara Dennerlein. Ironically she and Jimmy were on the same show the night this clip was filmed, and the producers had intended for Jimmy and Barbara to play something together. If you want to read about why it didn't happen check the All About Jazz interview with Barbara. Barbara's heros were the bebop stars Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie, so on her big night on German TV she played Dizzy's "Night in Tunisia" and her own composition for Bird, "Tribute to Charlie."
