Why I Support Obama - The Emotional Response

This is a response to the "Obama vs Clinton Hollywood Democratic Debate 3" interview. We've gotten a lot of great feedback and a gang of questions as well. Here's Derrick Ashong (aka DNA) taking a shot at answering some of those questions and hopefully explaining why this stuff matters to us.

Derrick Ashong

www.ArtsActionFund.org Derrick Ashong thinks so. Ashong spent his formative years living in several countries abroad, as well as a number of US cities before attending Harvard. Fully prepared to continue his education by getting a PhD, Derrick found himself drawn toward advocacy instead. After winning Billboard Magazine's 2007 World Song Writing Competition and founding his band Soulfège, Derrick dedicated himself to advocacy fulltime. This commitment found him as the host of his own show on Oprah radio, starting Take Back the Mic, a youth empowerment organization, and speaking to audiences all over the world. Earlier this summer, Derrick spoke during Americans for the Arts Annual Convention in Baltimore and posed a new challenge. We, as advocates for the arts, need to shift our position from people who are in need of help, to the position that our nation needs what we offering. We are the best hope for America. So often we focus on the fact that the arts are under attack and request that anyone and everyone support us before we disappear instead of focusing on all that the arts contributes. Visit the Arts Action Fund website to listen to what Derrick Ashong has to say and let us know what you think.

Derrick Ashong

Derrick Ashong is getting some mad negative feedback. And if you have no idea who Derrick Ashong is, this video sums him up for you. LYRICS: He is a song for all the people. (No he's not, no he's not!) He is the voice of a generation of all ages. (What does that mean?!) Rich and unrelatable to the poor. (Now that's more like it...) His message weak, we want no more! There is a man named Derrick Ashong Who claims he fights for society's wrongs. The main thing wrong with society is people like him. Generic messages and contradictions, Praising himself for all his decisions. It seems to me it's all about image to him. Derrick Ashong! He's so damn modest! Derrick Ashong! Cares about the people Yet I swear he seems to fly everywhere. (That's a lot of money wasted, to be honest.) [2x] He is a song for all the people. (No he's not, no he's not!) He is the voice of a generation of all ages. (What does that mean?!) Rich and unrelatable to the poor. (Now that's more like it...) His message weak, we want no more! [2x] Telling the world he's giving you the voice. It's like he thought before we had no choice. I'm pretty sure I've heard more politics in a pop song. Compares his band to those like Marley, Yet their songs, they compare hardly. I think it's time this rich kid's ego tuned down. Derrick Ashong! He's so damn modest! Derrick Ashong! Cares about the people Yet I swear he seems to fly everywhere. (That's a lot of money wasted, to be honest.) [2x] He is a song for all the people ...

Delaware Arts Summit 2011 - Derrick Ashong - Keynote Speaker

The 2011 Delaware Arts Summit brought a regional and national perspective of the arts to Delaware for arts organization staff, board, and volunteers. Also in attendance were artists, program planners, educators, arts patrons, and state and community leaders. The keynote speaker is an artist, advocate, and activist: literally the voice of a new generation. Whether heard on the radio, or in the eloquent expression of his thoughts on Sen. Barack Obama as seen in one of the most-viewed YouTube videos of 2008, in his music as leader of the emerging band Soulfège, or acting in Steven Spielberg's "Amistad," the Harvard-educated talent has found myriad ways to inspire, engage, and activate young people with positive messages for social change. He discussed the impact of arts education, his belief that artistry is the most profound form of communication, and the power of content that inspires people to do something good in their lives. Derrick welcomes three teams participating in the Pepsi Refresh Project. First up, Adam Ostrow and Brian Milner, who are pitching an idea to encourage local communities to band together with a Foursquare meets Craigslist application. The idea is that anyone can place a call for help and anyone can answer that call. Then Derrick is joined by Melissa Garcia and Sandy Jenney who are pitching a virtual food drive but this one is different. Instead of spending $1.00 on 1 can of food at the store, you can donate $1 to a food pantry they can buy a whole case of food? Lastly, Derrick talks with Gary Vaynerchuk and Marc Horvath about InvisiblePeople.TV. This organization travels from city to city to share the stories of the homeless. The hope is that they continue to travel and inspire people to create housing and feeding programs and bring new hope to the homeless. Pepsi Refresh—refresheverything.com.

He encouraged youth to speak to the government-elect about issues in Boston, MA through the arts. In the master class at The Citi Performing Arts Center, Derrick worked with youth to devise a video letter for the government-elect.
