Desborough Hosts the Charter of European Rural Communities.wmv

In November 2011 the Northamptonshire town of Desborough hosted a Charter of European Rural Communities workshop event. This included two workshops in which delegates discussed common problems, experiences and solutions relating to town twinning activities and voluntary organisations. Much of the discussions revolved around the use of volunteers. Delegates stayed with host families - an important aspect of such visits - and visited local factories, the Desborough Heritage Centre and St. Giles Church. The annual Christmas Tree Festival was taking place in the church and delegates brought examples of their countries' seasonal decorations to hang on a Charter tree. The motto of the Charter group is 'People meet people'. The organisation is non-political.

Two Poplars In Strong Wind At Desborough

Lines of poplars are characteristic of the French countryside, which has less forest than is typical in Germany, by comparison. Where wind blows over open country, air that is higher up and moving faster can descend and cause destruction. Putting wind breaks in the way helps to prevent that. Was it because of the destruction of Rome's legions by Hermann in the German forests in the time of Augustus that people of more Roman descent in France shaped the countryside in the way they did? And was it the protective nature of forests that made the German people tend to keep the land forested? People naturally imagine that blowing air into a gap would increase pressure, but when air is blown between two sheets of paper, they move together. A reasonable explanation for the effect is that air rolls along the sides producing regions of opposing spin on either side, similarly to how eddies can be seen on the sides of a river. Where two spins are in opposite senses, their adjacent parts have motion in the same direction and that suggests that in those places there are less collions than there are on average between molecules in the air. That means there would be a reduction in pressure. When wind blows over the land, perhaps air can roll along the ground, to some extent. Then the upper edge of a rolling mass has motion in the same sense as the overlying air stream. Sometimes, it seems, there is a large local reduction in pressure and the faster air is pulled down to the ground ...

Kim Desborough, Federation Representative Kiama High

Kim Desborough, teacher and Federation Representative spoke to us about the importance of the Federal Government's Review into School Funding and in particular about what more funding could do for her school , including providing additional support to Gifted and Talented students and those students with special needs. Earlier over 30 teachers from Kiama High School came out during their recess to visit the 'Public Education for our Future' Van and hear Gary Zadkovich, Deputy President, speak about the importance of the campaign and getting the message out to their community. The staff were happy and willing to sign the petition and will be working together to make submissions to the inquiry.
