Sam Harris: Can Science Determine Human Values? 1-7

Sam Harris: Can Science Determine Human Values? Partner: Berkeley Arts and Letters Location: First Congregational Church of Berkeley (2345 Channing Way at Dana, Berkeley) Berkeley, CA Event Date: 11.10.10 Speakers: Sam Harris Summary In this highly anticipated, explosive new book, the author of The End of Faith and Letter to a Christian Nation calls for an end to religion's monopoly on morality and human values. In The Moral Landscape: How Science Can Determine Human Values, Sam Harris tears down the wall between scientific facts and human values to dismantle the most common justification for religious faith -- that a moral system cannot be based on science. The End of Faith ignited a worldwide debate about the validity of religion. In its aftermath, Harris discovered that most people, from secular scientists to religious fundamentalists, agree on one point: Science has nothing to say on the subject of human values. Even among religious fundamentalists, the defense one most often hears for belief in God is not that there is compelling evidence that God exists, but that faith in Him provides the only guidance for living a good life. Controversies about human values are controversies about which science has officially had no opinion. Until now. Morality, Harris argues, is actually an undeveloped branch of neuroscience, and answers to questions of human value can be visualized on a "moral landscape" -- a space of real and potential outcomes whose peaks and valleys correspond ...

Part 1: The Creation of Popping - How To Determine Evidence.

Part 1 of the (last series of videos) on the subject the "creation of popping" by Slick Dogg. How to stay neutral in the war..... Recently ive had to take a hard look at the popping world,my attitude on the lies, and also my assessment of OG's whom i thought character was of non selfish nature.... Ive concluded that my time fighting the hard fight has to end due to the sheer insanity of it.. Ive always takin the postiton against the eb's of the creation of popping only because this is why the popping world as a whole is brainwashed to think that the only winnng style of popping is boogaloo sams style.... In the end the popping community will die out due to sameness,,,this is my nightmare... I took it upon myself to change that fate by implementing freestyle, and showing that my style,(g-style) was just as good if not better in a (non) bias eye..... Ive proven that-and because of it-people today are looking at popping in a different way. I tried to make more happen,,but its best for me to stop here with these last video's.

The way you live today, determines your eternal destiny

"Life without limbs" is an amazing true to life story of one who is physically challenged, Nick Vujivic. It is one of the most encouraging life story that I have ever seen. All of us have our own individual "disabilities." And all of us want to think that our own "disability/ies" are beyond compare and that no one can understand our discouragement, our own frustration, our own self-pity, our own tantrums perhaps even to the degree that we blame God or that we feel that God has forgotten us or hate us. Nick Vujivic, I am sure can definitely say the same things about his own disability. Yet look at his countenance. He is every bit of composure, peace and confidence. In fact, he does not blame God instead He gives Him praise and thanks. And as a result, by God's abiding love and grace, He has given Nick the strength and courage to brave his disability and that today, he lives an abunant life that most of us who do not have such degree of disability can even dream to have. And not only that he lives and abundant and joyful life, he lives a purposeful and meaningful life not only here on earth but also with reference to his life in all eternity. It is a matter of perspective truly. It is the kind of perspective that Nick Vujivic is banking on that is making the difference. In his chosen perspective, he factored God in it. And that is the decided the difference. Thus, as a direct consequence, he lives for God and others. He had decided a long time ago to fill his life with the ...

Pop Pilgrims - Memphis: Sun Studio - Home to Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jerry Lee Lewis

It's truly impossible to determine where rock 'n' roll was actually born, but Sun Studio in Memphis has as strong a claim as anywhere else. (Except, perhaps, Little Richard's loins.) Founded in 1950 by Sam Phillips, the studio—and its accompanying record label, Sun Records—was undeniably important in the history of the genre.Johnny Cash and Jerry Lee Lewis both graced Sun's tiny floors, but of course the most notable resident was Elvis Presley, who had a musical epiphany in the recording studio in 1953 with the song "That's All Right." In a way, Sun acted like indie labels did 20 years ago, nurturing young talent until bigger fish came along to snatch them away, as was the case with Elvis. After Presley moved on, Sun saw a serious dip in business, but his legacy eventually proved big enough to keep it afloat.U2 recorded a few songs at Sun for Rattle And Hum, and other artists have followed suit. According to our tour guide, Bob Dylan stopped by just to kiss the ground. These days, Sun offers tours during the day and still records bands at night. PBS recently began airing Sun Studio Sessions, with modern artists—from The Walkmen to Eli Reed—performing songs in the legendary space.

BBC Horizon 2009-2010 Do I Drink Too Much (Split1)

Alcohol is by far the most widely used drug - and a dangerous one at that. So why are so many of us drinking over the recommended limits? Why does alcohol have such a powerful grip on us? How much of our relationship with this drug is written in our genes? What are the real dangers of our children drinking too young? Addiction expert John Marsden, who likes a drink, makes a professional and personal exploration of our relationship with alcohol. He undergoes physical and neurological examinations to determine its impact, and finds out why some people will find it much harder than others to resist alcohol. Even at the age of 14 there may be a way of determining which healthy children will turn into addicts. John experiments with a designer drug being developed that hopes to replicate all the benefits of alcohol without the dangers. Could this drug replace alcohol in the future?

ASIMO - All New Features 2011

The all-new ASIMO is now advanced from an "automatic machine" to an "autonomous machine" with the decision-making capability to determine its behavior in concert with its surroundings such as movements of people. At the beginning of the development process, the following three factors were identified as necessary for a robot to perform as an autonomous machine, and the technologies required to realize these capabilities were developed; 1) high-level postural balancing capability which enables the robot to maintain its posture by putting out its leg in an instant, 2) external recognition capability which enables the robot to integrate information, such as movements of people around it, from multiple sensors and estimate the changes that are taking place, and 3) the capability to generate autonomous behavior which enables the robot to make predictions from gathered information and autonomously determine the next behavior without being controlled by an operator. With these capabilities, the all-new ASIMO takes another step closer to practical use in an environment where it coexists with people.
