Taken from both the BBC's "Riot at the Rite" and Janos Darvas' 2001 Documentary on Igor Stravinsky, an interesting accuracy as to what transpired between Sergei Diaghilev, owner of The Ballet Russes who would be dancing to the piece, and the composer who would, with this composition, change the direction of classical music at the first playing of the piece. This was 1913 and these men were in their 20's. Diaghilev's company of course went on to perform Le Sacre du Printemps (The Rite of Spring) to this shocking music which was exacerbated further by the incredibly advanced choreography of Vaslav Nijinsky, the Ballet Russes star who would from then on be considered out of his mind when he was merely years ahead of his time. I found some footage a couple of days ago of Anton Dolin (1904-1983), Diaghilev Ballet Russe dancer and long-time partner of Alicia Markova. It shows Dolin performing on stage in a London review of 1930 - 'Charlots Masquerade'. I've fronted the film with photographs. The first section has images of Dolin's Ballet Russe roles - 'Le train Bleu' of 1929 (which showcases his almost acrobatic talents and is accompanied by the music Darius Milhaud composed for that ballet) and then 'Le Bal' (with Alexandra Danilova and Serge Lifar). The following section shows the next stage of his career - now in partnership with Markova. Photographs are principally of them in 'Giselle'. And I've added music from one of Giselle's Act 1 solos. The last section of course is the footage of 'Charlots Masquerade'. I've used a part of Jacques Offenbach's 'Gaîté Parisienne' as it seems to capture something of the spirit of the review.

Conductor: Evgeny Svetlanov Michel Fokine was one of the most innovative choreographers of Serge Diaghilev's Ballets Russes. His choreography of the Polovstian dances from Borodin's opera Prince Igor incorporated the vigorous and athletic style of the Russian folk dance tradition. The audience stormed the stage after Diaghilev debuted this work in Paris in 1909; the production was designed by Nicholas Roehrich. Fokine emphasized powerful, male dancing and dramatic expression. This ballet really catches fire at the end - it can be seen almost as a precurser to the later Broadway musical. Sergey Diaghilev's Ballets Russes Moscows Bolshoi Theatre is presenting a gala-program of short one-act ballets in honor of the 100th anniversary of Sergey Diaghilevs Ballets Russes. Ballets Russes began in 1908 and a year later gave its first season in Paris. The 1909 program, which included several ballets, was a huge success in France, recruiting hundreds of people to the army of ballet fans. The performances also fascinated professionals and brought glory to the Russian school. It is no surprise that the 100th anniversary of these ground-breaking shows, landmarks in the history of ballet, is being celebrated worldwide. The show aims to unite three historical ballet capitals on the stage of the Bolshoi. The first city of these three is Perm, Diaghilevs hometown near the Urals. The Perm Opera and Ballet Theatre regularly pays tribute to the memory of its famous townsman. For the anniversary program, the company presents famous Polovetsian Dances and Le Spectre de la Rose, using Michel Fokines choreography.
