I'm Coming Out - Diana Ross (1980)

"I'm Coming Out" was a hit single released by Motown singer Diana Ross in 1980, written and produced by Chic members Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers for her album "diana". In 1979, Ross commissioned Rodgers and Edwards to create material for a new album, following the success of her final Ashford & Simpson-composed and produced LP "The Boss", after taking her daughters to see Chic in concert. Rodgers got the idea for "I'm Coming Out", originally written for Aretha Franklin, after noticing three different drag queens dressed as Diana Ross at a New York club called the GG Barnum Room. The lyrics hold an additional meaning to Ross, as she was leaving Motown Records after that album and 'coming out' from under the thumb of Berry Gordy. The song was a hit, peaking at number five on the US Pop Singles chart. It is also notable for being the first song usually performed at Ross' performances and concerts since 1980. Rodgers convinced his neighbor, producer Meco Monardo, to contract the horns for the album in return for a commitment by Rodgers to co-produce Monardo's then-upcoming album of music from the film "The Empire Strikes Back". Monardo, a former first-call session player who had a string of hits in the late 1970s with disco versions of music from movies such as "Star Wars", also played trombone on the album and is featured in a solo towards the end of "I'm Coming Out". The song has been sampled many times over the years, most notably by Stevie J, who used a sample on the ...

Diana Ross, Michael Jackson & others tibute to" USA for AFRICA " at American Music Awards- 1986 -

USA for Africa (United Support of Artists for Africa) was the name under which forty-seven predominantly US artists, led by Michael Jackson and Lionel Richie, recorded the hit single "We Are the World" in 1985. The song was a US and UK Number One for the collective in April of that year. The considerable profits from the enterprise went to the USA for Africa Foundation, which used them for the relief of famine and disease in Africa and specifically to 1984--1985 famine in Ethiopia; critics, however, claim that this money went directly to the governments (often military) of the affected countries rather than the people.USA for Africa also held a benefit event, Hands Across America, in which approximately seven million people held hands in a human chain for fifteen minutes along a path across the continental United States. Participants paid ten dollars to stand in line and the money raised was used to fight hunger and homelessness in Africa. The combined revenues raised from the sales of "We Are the World" and Hands Across America was almost $100 million. Diana Ross & The Queen of England- November 26, 1991- London, UK -

I want to report a share of the speech that Diana Ross made, after Martin Luther King's murder, at Royal Albert Hall , in front of the British Royal Family, in London, November 19, 1968, While she is singing ( with The Supremes ) "SOMEWHERE ", stops the music and starts to talk : " I haven' t to many changes to speak to very important people like who stay in front of me tonight. Like you see, I'm black and you are whites .I sing and you hear me ; then, when all is finished, we go all out from the hall, together. There are some States of my country, the USA, where whites and blacks haven' t the same rights : they can't go out from the same door. I wanna that you think about when you'll go home ". A cold silence fall in the hall and someone, from the last rows, start to clap . In short, all the audience , include the Royal Family members, give to Diana Ross and the Supremes a standing ovation lasted more than 2 minutes ! Miss Ross thanks and continues the concert . After the show, Diana Ross and the Supremes were received by the Queen Mother .

Upside Down - Diana Ross (1980)

"Upside Down" was a hit song by American R&B and soul singer Diana Ross released on the Motown label. It was the first single taken from her 1980 album "diana" and hit number one on the Billboard Hot 100 on September 6, 1980. It also hit number one on the Billboard Disco/Dance and R&B charts. The song listed at #62 on Billboard magazine's 'Greatest Songs of All Time'. Her 11th studio album, "diana" was, and still is, the biggest-selling studio collection of Ross' career. Following the US success of 1979's "The Boss", Ross wanted a fresher, more modern sound for her next LP. Production team Bernard Edwards and Nile Rodgers of Chic had recently written a whole album's worth of material with Aretha Franklin in mind. Franklin had, however, declined the offer and all the songs, including "Upside Down", were subsequently passed on to Ross. Released in May 1980, the "diana" album introduced Ross to a new generation of fans worldwide. Reaching number two on the Billboard 200 chart and number one on the Billboard Soul Albums Chart, as well as yielding two top ten singles including the number-one single "Upside Down", the album would sell over six million copies in the United States and be certified gold by the Recording Industry Association of America. Some thirty years after its release, "diana" remains Ross' best-selling studio album to date, having sold a total of over ten million copies worldwide.
