The Rebel Girl (Hazel Dickens)

The begining of this video, is an audio narrative by Elizabeth Gurley Flynn, with images of her, as well as a quote of hers about women in the IWW This Narative is commonly used on recordings to introduce the song "The Rebel Girl" in which Joe Hill dedicated to Elezabeth Guley Flynn. The second part, is the song "The Rebel Girl" Writen by Joe Hill, and performed by Hazel Dickens. I have used images of women who were (or are) members of the IWW. Only two were "supporters" and not members of the IWW (Emma Goldman and Charlotte Anita Whitney) Emma Goldman: Well known anachist writer and feminist, took part in the IWW free speech fight during the first world war. Helen Keller: Mostly known for her disability, was an active member of the IWW and influential feminist. Grace Silver: Mother of once famous actress Queen Silver. Active organizer in the IWW Grace and Queen Silver were influental supporters of evolution, and athiests. Lucy Parsons: Wife of Albert Parsons a haymarket Martyr, organizer for the IWW and Communist Party. Judi Bari: Radical enviromentalist, feminist, and member of the IWW and Earth First. Victom of a failed assasination, later died of cancer. Mother Jones: Helped form the IWW in 1905. One of the most well known organizers, and active socailists of the day. She would most likely be annoyed that liberals have a magazine named after her. Lesbia Harford: She was a well known poet in Australia, and a member of the Australian contingent of the IWW Amelia Siblich <b>...</b>

Black Lung (Hazel Dickens)

Black Lung, by Hazel Dickens: He's had more hard luck than most men could stand the mines were his first love, but never his friend he's lived a hard life, and hard he'll die Black Lung's done got him, his time is nigh Black lung, black lung, you're just biding your time Soon all this suffering I'll leave behind But I can't help wonder what God had in mind To send such a devil, to claim this soul of mine He went to the boss man, but he closed the door it seems you're not wanted when you're sick and you're poor you're not even covered in their medical plans and your life depends on the favors of man Down in the poorhouse on starvation's plan Where pride is a stranger and doomed is a man His soul full of coal dust 'ill his body's decayed Everyone but black lung's done turned him away. Black lung black lung your hand's icy cold As you reach for my life and you tourture my soul Cold as that waterhole down in that dar eave Where I spent my life's blood digging my own grave Down at the gravyard the boss man came With his little bunch of flowers Dear God! What a shame Take back those flowers, don't sing no sad songs The die has been cast now A good man is gone.

MASTERPIECE CLASSIC | The Tales of Charles Dickens | PBS

www.pbs.org The Tales of Charles Dickens on MASTERPIECE Classic Sundays beginning February 15, 2009 on PBS. It seemed like the best of times, before it turned into the worst of times. Credit flowed like champagne on New 's Eve, until the inevitable economic hangover. Wall Street in 2008? No, London in the 1820s in Charles Dickens' eerily prophetic novel "Little Dorrit". MASTERPIECE CLASSIC presents this timely story of debt, greed, and love, along with three of Dickens' other great works, on "The Tales of Charles Dickens" airing Sundays, February 15 to May 3, 2009, at 9pm ET on PBS (check local listings). "The Tales of Charles Dickens" features all-new productions of Oliver Twist, Little Dorrit, and The Old Curiosity Shop, plus an encore presentation of David Copperfield, starring Harry Potter's Daniel Radcliffe in his first film role.

Hazel Dickens / Alice Gerrard: The Sweetest Gift, A Mother's Smile (Coats) - 1967, Lyrics

Hazel Dickens: Pretty Bird, 1967 - www.youtube.com Lyrics below. This song was recorded in 1967, and released on the LP, "Hazel & Alice" (Rounder Records, 1973). Composed by James B. Coats (1901 - 1961). ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ One day a mother came to a prison To see an erring, but precious son She told the warden how much she loved him It did not matter what he had done She did not bring to him parole or pardon (free) She brought no silver no pomp or style It was a halo bright sent down from heaven ('s light) The sweetest gift a mother's smile Her boy had wandered far from the fireside Tho she had pleaded with him each night Yet not a word did she ever utter That told her heart ached, her smile was bright She did not bring to him parole or pardon (free) She brought no silver no pomp or style It was a halo bright sent down from heaven ('s light) The sweetest gift a mother's smile She left a smile you can remember She's gone to heaven from heartaches free The bars around you will never change her You were her baby and e're will be... She did not bring to him parole or pardon (free) She brought no silver no pomp or style It was a halo bright sent down from heaven ('s light) The sweetest gift a mother's smile. Hazel Dickens - Fire in the hole

"You can tell them in the country, tell them in the town Miners down in Mingo laid their shovels down we won't pull another pillar, load another ton or lift another finger until the union we have won Stand up boys, let the bosses know Turn your buckets over, turn your lanterns low There's fire in our hearts and fire in our soul but there ain't gonna be no fire in the hole Daddy died a miner and grandpa he did too, I'll bet this coal will kill me before my working days is through And a hole this dark and dirty an early grave I find And I plan to make a union for the ones I leave behind Stand up boys, let the bosses know Turn you buckets over, turn your lanterns low There's fire in our hearts and fire in our soul but there ain't gonna be no fire in the hole There ain't gonna be no fire in the hole"

Christopher Hitchens on Charles Dickens, Alexis de Tocqueville, Ghostwriters (2/4) (1997)

May 25, 1997 www.amazon.com Watch the full program: thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Charles John Huffam Dickens (7 February 1812 -- 9 June 1870) was the most popular English novelist of the Victorian era and he remains popular, responsible for some of English literature's most iconic characters. Many of his novels, with their recurrent concern for social reform, first appeared in magazines in serialised form, a popular format at the time. Unlike other authors who completed entire novels before serialisation, Dickens often created the episodes as they were being serialized. The practice lent his stories a particular rhythm, punctuated by cliffhangers to keep the public looking forward to the next instalment. The continuing popularity of his novels and short stories is such that they have never gone out of print. His work has been praised for its mastery of prose and unique personalities by writers such as George Gissing and GK Chesterton, though others, such as Henry James and Virginia Woolf, criticised it for sentimentality and implausibility. American Notes for General Circulation is a travelogue by Charles Dickens detailing his trip to North America from January to June, 1842. While there he acted as a critical observer of these societies almost as if returning a status report on their progress. This can be compared to the style of his Pictures from Italy written four years later, where he wrote far more like a tourist. His American journey was also an inspiration for his <b>...</b>

OUT BEHIND THE BARN by Little Jimmy Dickens

Out Behind The Barn by Little Jimmy Dickens 1954 Little Jimmy Dickens is the master of the country novelty song, as well as a renowned ballad singer. He also known for his diminutive stature -- he's less than five feet tall -- and his affection for flamboyant, rhinestone-studded outfits and country humor. Although he never had a consistent presence on the charts, he managed to have hits in every decade between the 1940s and the 1970s, and he became one of the Grand Ole Opry's most popular performers. Dickens was the 13th child of a West Virginian farmer. During his childhood, he fell in love with music and had a dream of performing on the Grand Ole Opry. He began performing professionally while he was a student at the University of West Virginia in the late '30s, singing on a local radio station. Dickens left school shortly after he received his regular radio job. He began traveling around the country, singing on radio shows in Indiana, Ohio, and Michigan under the name Jimmy the Kid. Roy Acuff heard Dickens sing on a radio show in Saginaw, MI, and invited him to sing on the Grand Ole Opry. In 1949, Dickens -- who was now using the name Little Jimmy Dickens -- became a permanent member of the Grand Ole Opry. That year, he also signed a record contract with Columbia Records, releasing his first single, "Take an Old Cold Tater and Wait," in the spring of 1949. The song became a Top Ten hit and launched a string of hit novelty, ballad, and honky tonk singles that lasted for <b>...</b>

Scrooge: Charles Dickens' Classic - A Christmas Carol (1935)

DVD: www.amazon.com thefilmarchived.blogspot.com Scrooge is a 1935 film directed by Henry Edwards featuring Seymour Hicks as Ebenezer Scrooge, the miser who hates Christmas. It was the first sound version of the Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol, not counting a 1928 short subject that now appears to be lost. Hicks had played the role of Scrooge on the stage many times beginning in 1901, and again in a 1913 British silent film version. The 1935 film differs from all other versions of the story in one significant way - most of the ghosts, including that of Jacob Marley, are not actually shown onscreen, although their voices are heard. Only the Ghost of Christmas Present (Oscar Asche) is actually seen in full figure - the Ghost of Christmas Past is a mere shape with no discernible facial features, Marley's Ghost is seen only briefly as a face on the door knocker, and the Ghost of Christmas Yet to Come is just an outstretched pointing finger. Why the film was made this way remains unclear; it is obviously not due to the fact that British filmmakers could not achieve special effects, since we do see Marley's face superimposed on Scrooge's door knocker. Another aspect making this film different from other versions of the story is that Seymour Hicks plays both the old and young Scrooge, rather straining the credulity of the audience, since by this time, the sixty-four year old actor was visibly too aged to convincingly play a young man. The story is also severely <b>...</b>
