The Digital Divide

Using a compilation of outside video and photos along with original text this video addresses the social problem known as the Digital Divide. After introducing the topic, we attempt to clear up any misconceptions about the issue. We then go on to label the three pressing aspects that must be overcome in order to bridge the technology gap: access, ability, and empowerment. We illustrate how different groups are working towards a solution and encourage individual involvement.

An Interview about Bridging the Digital Divide

I recently received a scholarship from Ericsson to attend the United Nations Social Good Summit in New York City. I first heard of this company because they were the company that helped Nobel Peace Prize Winner Muhammad Yunus create a nationwide cellphone network in Bangladesh. It was actually Ericsson's backend systems that have helped me tweet and upload many of my videos while in Bangladesh. For most people who have heard of Ericsson, we think of their Sony Ericsson cellphones. This, as I found out, is not their main business. Which was great because at no point during my time with them did they ever want me to pitch their cellphones. Their main customer isn't you or I - it's cellphone and telecommunication companies. They believe access to communication is a human right and being connected will help the poor. That's the reason I decided to interview them and make this video. ============================ Videos Linked in the End Screen: ============================ My "How Come" Question to Ericsson: www.youtube.com My Pitch to the United Nations: www.youtube.com ================================= Special Thanks Goes to the Following..... ================================= Uncultured Project Donors ( uncultured.com ) Elgato Systems ( www.elgato.com ) Ericsson ( http ) Red Giant Software ( www.redgiantsoftware.com ) CrumplePop Software ( http ) CoreMelt Software ( www.coremelt.com ) Singular Software ( http ) Stephen Purcell ( twitter.com ) The uploaded video is was ...

The Digital Divide

The digital divide refers to the gap between people with effective access to digital and information technology, and those with very limited or no access at all. It includes the imbalance both in physical access to technology and the resources and skills needed to effectively participate as a digital citizen. (source: wikipedia.org) This video, created by shortformvideo.com, debuted at our inaugural National Conference and Consumer Congress in Melbourne this week. The video features interviews with different experts who discuss how the digital divide issue impacts on the people they represent.

Bridge the Digital Divide

This video is my pitch the United Nations as part of the Citizen Ambassador Contest. You can find more about this contest at this URL: www.un.org My pitch to them is that we need to bridge the digital divide. Contests like this are great but it's only those who are rich enough to afford access to the internet. Many of us are talking about poverty - but it's not the poor themselves who are able to speak to their own needs. In order for us to help the marginalized, the marginalized need a voice for themselves. The script of my pitch is as follows: "Excuse me, Mr. Secretary-General, as you can see with this contest, the internet is a powerful way to have a global conversation that can influence global priorities. Unfortunately, conversations on the internet exclude the poorest of the world's poor. This is because they are beyond something called the digital divide. Bridging this divide won't happen by simply dumping technology on the poor. Rather, we need bridge-makers who can connect communities on opposite sides of this divide. This isn't a theory - I've been doing this for the past four years. And, if you give me the chance, I'd love to tell you more." Digital Divides - The Potential of the Internet for Development

The Internet and other new technologies have put information at the centre of the global economy. It is therefore important to understand who produces and reproduces this information, who has access, and who and where are represented by information in our contemporary knowledge economy. This audio slide show will highlight inequalities in traditional knowledge and information geographies, before moving to examine the Internet-era potentials for new and more inclusionary patterns. It will consider the implications for developing countries, and will conclude that rather than democratising platforms of knowledge sharing, the Internet seems to be enabling a digital division of labour in which the visibility, voice and power of the North is reinforced rather than diminished. The ultimate goal of the talk is then to ask why in an age of almost ubiquitous potential connectivity, so many people are still left out of global networks, debates and conversations.

TEDxSanMigueldeAllende - Aleph Molinari - Bridging the Digital Divide

President of the Fundación Proacceso ECO, AC Aleph Molinari studied Economics and Critical Theory at the University of British Columbia in Vancouver, Canada. In 2006, in conjunction with the Universidad Autónoma de México (UNAM), Aleph conducted an in-depth study on the effects of solid residue disposal and urban approaches to Mexico City's periphery. The study formed the conceptual basis of a documentary film on the processes of Mexico City's trash cycle and the lives of trash pickers living in the outskirts of the city. In 2008 Aleph founded the Fundación Proacceso ECO with the objective of reducing the digital divide and providing access to quality education. After two years of designing the project, the Red de Innovación y Aprendizaje (RIA) or Learning and Innovation Network was inaugurated in 2009 as a network of community centers that provide education with the use of technology. Today, the network has grown to 42 educational centers located in 28 municipalities with a high degree of poverty and lack of infrastructure. The RIA has currently reached more than 115000 users in less than two years of operating and has graduated more than 28000 users. By the end of this year the network will be expanded to 70 educational centers and will reach approximately 350000 users by the end of 2012. Aleph has presented the model of the RIA twice at the Annual Forums of the OECD. proacceso.org.mx About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading ...

Italy: fighting the cultural digital divide with an "internet evangelizing show"

At Milan Theatre in 2008 took place the first of "The Internet Show" with Marco Montemagno, promoted by the no profit association Codice Internet, www.codiceinternet.it. It's an itinerant internet evangelizing show throughout Italy (free for the audience) the mission is to explain the Internet opportunities to the masses (...in a new and entertaining way) and to contribute to fill the cultural digital divide gap (in Italy 6 out of 10 italians do not use Internet :( ). The "presentation/show" is based on a speech always in synch with videos and includes several cool interactions with the audience: playing table tennis on stage (comparison with the internet rules), folding tshirt in 5 second, playing wii live with the audience on a maxi screen, opening a blog collectively live in 5 minutes, demonstrating how internet works with people throwing 2 table tennis balls all over the hall, and so on :) Duration: 1h 40 mins Subtitles: English, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, Chinese, Portoguese Please share this video! Virginia Eubanks: Deconstructing the Digital Divide

chicagohumanities.org - See more Chicago Humanities Festival events. Virginia Eubanks, author of Digital Dead End Fighting for Social Justice in the Information Age, describes her realization that the concept of the digital divide, and the solutions that came out of the movement created to counter it, was based on faulty assumptions. As a result, her book is based on doing research with people instead of on them. Virginia Eubanks joined the Women's Studies department at SUNY-Albany in 2004 after completing her Ph.D. in Science and Technology Studies at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. Her research on technology, poverty and women's citizenship developed through a history of activism in the community media and technology center movements. She earned her BA in American Literary Culture at the University of California, Santa Cruz (1994) and her MS in Rhetoric and Communication at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (1999).

ITU Telecom World 2011 -- Main Forum: Digital Villages: Rethinking "Bridging the Digital Divide"

Building digital villages or completely bridging the digital divide has alluded so many governments and operators over the years. Yet digital villages are a key component to building Smart Sustainable Villages, which can build Sustainable Cities. Part of this has been the lack of considering the energy divide issue (1.6 billion people lack access to electricity just as 1.4 billion lack access to telecom--clear link), the use of Green ICT (energy efficiency and green power) as well as looking at innovative business models to deploy services to rural and remote areas. Green ICT today is the "missing link" to bridging the digital divide. This session will re-examine business models and technologies to help build Digital Villages, and examine if this is the responsibility of government, private sector or NGOs to bridge the digital divide using Green ICT?
