Eddie Lang, Joe Venuti - Dinah (1928)

Joe Venuti was born on a ship on the way to the USA from Italy and became, in many circles, THE great jazz violinist. Eddie Lang (who was also known as Blind Willie Dunn) was a boyhood friend of Venuti, and was the first great jazz guitarist. Lang died in 1933 as the result of a botched tonsillectomy, which operation had been taken at the urging of his friend, Bing Crosby.

The Revelers - Dinah (1925)

The Revelers were an American quintet (four close harmony singers and a pianist) popular in the late 1920s and early 1930s. The Revelers' recordings of "Dinah," "Old Man River", "Valencia," "Baby Face," "Blue Room," "Birth of the Blues," "When Yuba Plays the Rumba on the Tuba," and many more, became popular in the United States and then Europe in the late 1920s. All of the members had recorded individually or in various combinations, and formed a group in 1925. The original Revelers were tenors Franklyn Baur and Lewis James, baritone Elliot Shaw, bass Wilfred Glenn, and pianist Ed Smalle. Smalle was replaced by Frank Black in 1926. The group (with Black at the piano) appeared in a short movie musical, The Revelers (1927), filmed in the sound-on-disc Vitaphone process. This one-reel short film, recently restored by "The Vitaphone Project," shows the group performing "Mine," "Dinah," and "No Foolin'." A second short, filmed the same day with another three songs, awaits restoration. Baur was replaced by Frank Luther and then James Melton (later a Metropolitan Opera tenor). The Revelers were stars on radio and in vaudeville, as well as in the recording studio. On radio they were regulars on The Palmolive Hour (1927-31). Ring Lardner observed, "Under any name, they sound as sweet." Lardner outlined his "perfect radio program" for The New Yorker magazine, and found a place for The Revelers along with Paul Whiteman and Fanny Brice. The German group The Comedian Harmonists formed ...

Dinah Washington - Cry Me A River

Now you say you're lonely Said you cried the whole night through Well you can cry me a river Cry me a river 'Cause I cried a river over you Oohhh Now you say you're sorry For being so untrue So what? Just cry me a river Cry me a river I cried a river over you You drove me (Bye-bye, my love) You nearly drove me out of my head (Bye-bye, my love) While you never shed a tear Remember? I remember all you said Told me love was too plebeian Told me you were through with me And now you say you love me Well, just to prove you do Go on and cry me a river I'd like to see you cry me a river 'Cause I'm tired of crying over You

Dinah Washington - What a Difference A Day Made

Dinah Washington (August 29, 1924 December 14, 1963) was a blues, R&B and jazz singer. Despite dying at the early age of 39, Washington became one of the most influential vocalists of the twentieth century,. She is a 1986 inductee of the Alabama Jazz Hall of Fame. Lyrics: What a difference a day made Twenty-four little hours Brought the sun and the flowers Where there used to be rain My yesterday was blue, dear Today I'm part of you, dear My lonely nights are through, dear Since you said you were mine What a difference a day makes There's a rainbow before me Skies above can't be stormy Since that moment of bliss, that thrilling kiss It's heaven when you find romance on your menu What a difference a day made And the difference is you What a difference a day makes There's a rainbow before me Skies above can't be stormy Since that moment of bliss, that thrilling kiss It's heaven when you find romance on your menu What a difference a day made And the difference is you

Dinah Washington & Brook Benton - Baby (You've Got What It Takes)

Some production ideas look better on paper than in reality, and the pairing of Mercury Record's two most successful artists in the late 1950's, Dinah Washington and Brook Benton, is a case in point. Dinah resisted the notion of doing a duet album with Brook before the recording session even took place simply because she viewed herself at this point in her career as a "jazz" artist and Brook simply as "pop" or "rhythm and blues". If you listen closely to the lyrics of "Baby (You've Got What It Takes)", you'll notice a point where Dinah remarks "you're in my spot, baby", which, of course, was aimed at Brook who mistakenly started singing Dinah's part of the song. The error was nearly seamless so the producers left it alone which was just as well since Dinah had already stormed out of the studio after the recording refusing to sing any further with Brook and ending a planned album of duets. It's really a shame since the two of them recorded a pair of rhythm and blues classics with "Rockin' Good Way", and this recording of "Baby" composed by Clyde Otis, Murray Stein, and Brook himself. The song went to #5 in February of 1960.

Dr.Buzzard - Dinah Shore TV Show: I'll Play The Fool - Dr.Buzzard's Original Savannah Band

"I'll Play The Fool" shown in it's entirety. Composed by Stony Browder,Jr. & August Darnell This vintage TV clip of Dr.Buzzard's Original Savannah Band begins with an introduction by the legendary Dinah Shore while Sean Connery , Jill Ireland & George Kirby are chilling. This is the first of two songs that were performed. The second song from this TV show has also been posted. SUGARCOATED SIDEBAR: During these times all the TV shows wanted us to mime the entire performance which we were reluctant to do. A compromise was reached with the shows we finally performed on. We went into the studio and did a special TV mix. We muted the lead vocal and some of the background vocals . We also muted a few instruments . On the show Cory's lead vocal is completely live and so is the piano , hi-hat and toms. Stony & August microphones are live but their background vocals are also on tape thus at times they are doubling themselves. The bell hop singers in the background , horn section, Vibraphones , Guitar , Bass , most of the Drum kit, Percussion , synthesizer are miming. Notice also that you hear but do not see strings. Addendum: In those days there were no automated boards or home music software/computers etc. In order to duplicate the exact mix you had to take a polaroids/pictures of the board and painstakingly notate all the knob settings for everything including EQ's, reverbs, delays, volume faders etc. When we did the TV remix we used the mixing documentation in order to maintain ...
