In 1997, at the height of her modeling career, Waris spoke for the first time with Laura Ziv of the women's magazine Marie Claire about the female genital mutilation (FGM) that she had undergone as a child, an interview which received worldwide media coverage. That same year, Waris became a UN ambassador for the abolition of FGM, and later paid her mother a visit in her native Somalia. In 1998, Waris authored her first book, Desert Flower, an autobiography which went on to become an international bestseller.[2] She later released other successful books including Desert Dawn, Letter To My Mother, and Desert Children, the latter of which was launched in tandem with a European campaign against FGM.

27-03-2010 Het boek Desert Flower - Mijn Woestijn - van Waris Dirie over meisjesverminking in Somalië maakte diepe indruk toen het twaalf jaar geleden verscheen. Nu is het verfilmd. Iedere dag worden duizenden meisjes slachtoffer van vrouwenbesnijdenis. Niet alleen in Islamitische landen, maar ook in Europa. Het overkwam ook Waris Dirie, voormalig topmodel. Geboren in een nomadenstam in Somalië, werd ze op vijfjarige leeftijd besneden. Normaal, in haar cultuur. Ze weigerde echter op haar dertiende zich te laten uithuwelijken aan een 61-jarige man, vluchtte en kwam terecht in Londen. Daar werd ze ontdekt als fotomodel.In New York, op het moment dat ze aan de top van haar carrière staat, besluit ze te stoppen met het modellenwerk en haar leven verder te wijden aan de bestrijding van meisjesbesnijdenis.
