At the time it was built, Splash Mountain was one of the most expensive projects created by Walt Disney Imagineering ($75 million). The Splash Mountain project was not originally approved, due to the cost. The Imagineers on the team mounted an internal publicity campaign, taking turns carrying large (4' x 6') artistic drawings of the project around the Imagineering offices and pitching the project (and its technical details) to anyone who would listen. This grass roots campaign succeeded in educating all of Imagineering, and most of the Disney executives, on the project. According to an Imagineer familiar with the project, the original design for the logs included a scooped front nose intended to move the water in front of the log, and to assist in slowing the log down during the final drop. During final testing of the ride, Disney president and CEO Michael Eisner convinced the Imagineers to let him and his son on the ride (over the Imagineers' collective objections). The scoop design had the side effect of throwing large amounts of water up in the air and onto the riders, and Eisner and his son came off the ride soaked. Michael commented to the Imagineers "Great ride, but you have to do something about the water". The log design was changed shortly afterwards. The audio-animatronic characters were adapted from the America Sings attraction in Disneyland Park's Tomorrowland that had run from 1974 through 1988, having replaced the Carousel of Progress after that show was <b>...</b>

Darth Vader - STAR WARS Episode 4: A New Hope On September 12, 2009 -- at Disney's first ever Comic-Con like convention: the D23 Expo -- an announcement was made of the original STAR TOURS ride's impending closure at Disneyland. Darth Vader and a legion of his stormtroopers were on hand to hear of this (www.youtube.com -- yet were reassured by a Disney Imagineer that the closing was only temporary -- as a new and improved STAR TOURS ride would be taking its place... in 2014. Vader quickly squashed this: "Unacceptable, the Emperor will not tolerate an opening later than 2011...". Jump to lightspeed to present day -- the first ever ride on the new STAR TOURS 2.0 (also known as STAR TOURS 3-D) occurred on May 20th at Disneyland at a special preview event -- just prior to the ride's opening to the public which is scheduled for June 3rd. I was on this maiden voyage and shot video which shows the newly enhanced queue area and ride itself, which is now displayed for riders in Hi-Definition 3-D that is accompanied by the ride simulator's movements (so while viewable in my video, the full impact of the fantastic 3-D visuals and g-force thrills are only experienced when riding it). The old Space Mt... about 1/2 of the ride with the lights on. The lights are on because the ride's braking system stopped all the cars, probably one got too close to another. The CMs come along (starting with the end of the ride) and push each car to get it going then gravity takes over.

Located above the Pirate's of the Caribbean, this 2200-square-foot luxury apartment was designed as a place for the Disney family to entertain friends at the park. It was completed in January 2008, true to Walt's dream. James Orviatt, Disneyland's Dream Squad working lead, gave me a private tour inside this magnificent suite which was conceptualized during the 1960s by Imagineer Dorothea Redmond. The Master Suite is modeled after Adventureland in true Victorian exotic style with florals, vines and an electroluminescent painting of Neverland above the bed. You'll also notice several lighting fixtures throughout the suite, as Walt loved to read in bed. In the Master Suite, you'll find a gorgeous stained glass replica of Louis Comfort Tiffany's "Young Woman at a Fountain." Press the magical button before your bath, and more than 1800 stars will appear above you, along with a beautiful musical accompaniment. (You may even see a Hidden Mickey.) The sink, with its swan motif, calls to mind Sleeping Beauty Castle. Step inside the large walk in closet, and you'll find two plush bath robes waiting for you. Fun Fact Your 24-hour concierge will take your pictures in bathrobes outside Sleeping Beauty Castle! Inside the parlor, the fireplace sparks mimic the fireworks over Sleeping Beauty Castle, while on the mantel you'll find a bird <b>...</b>
