TEDxObserver - Cory Doctorow

A Skinner box that trains you to under-value your privacy: how do we make kids care about online privacy? In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TED has created a program called TEDx. TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. Our event is called TEDxObserver, where x = independently organized TED event. At our TEDxObserver event, TEDTalks video and live speakers will combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events, including ours, are self-organized. www.ted.com

Cory Doctorow: The coming war on general computation [28C3]

The coming war on general computation The copyright war was just the beginning The last 20 years of Internet policy have been dominated by the copyright war, but the war turns out only to have been a skirmish. The coming century will be dominated by war against the general purpose computer, and the stakes are the freedom, fortune and privacy of the entire human race. The problem is twofold: first, there is no known general-purpose computer that can execute all the programs we can think of except the naughty ones; second, general-purpose computers have replaced every other device in our world. There are no airplanes, only computers that fly. There are no cars, only computers we sit in. There are no hearing aids, only computers we put in our ears. There are no 3D printers, only computers that drive peripherals. There are no radios, only computers with fast ADCs and DACs and phased-array antennas. Consequently anything you do to "secure" anything with a computer in it ends up undermining the capabilities and security of every other corner of modern human society. And general purpose computers can cause harm -- whether it's printing out AR15 components, causing mid-air collisions, or snarling traffic. So the number of parties with legitimate grievances against computers are going to continue to multiply, as will the cries to regulate PCs. The primary regulatory impulse is to use combinations of code-signing and other "trust" mechanisms to create computers that run programs ...

Cory Doctorow on The War on Kids, Boing Boing, & His Next Novel

As one of the editors of Boing Boing, Cory Doctorow runs one of the best-known blogs on the planet. As the author of best-selling young-adult novels such as Little Brother and the new For The Win, he has his pulse on what it is like to be growing up in the 21st century. As a writer who simultaneously publishes his work online for free and via a traditional bookseller (Tor), he is at the bleeding edge of creating what he calls 21st century art: "contemporary art that is made to be copied." In July Reason.tv's Nick Gillespie talked with Doctorow about raising free-range children, the future of copyright, and what makes Boing Boing tick. Approximately 5.26 minutes. Shot by Gillespie and edited by Josh Swain. Scroll down for downloadable versions and subscribe to Reason.tv's YouTube channel to receive automatic notification when new material goes live.

episode 87 - Cory Doctorow - part 01

Science fiction writer and technology activist Cory Doctorow explains how, as a boy in Toronto, he became interested in science fiction. He discusses the distinction between science fiction as a genre and as a marketing category and notes that the best science fiction is allegorical. Science fiction films, notes Doctorow, operate differently than science fiction books. Most sci-fi films, he says, are road trip stories with flimsy narratives. Doctorow shares insights into his novels, Down and Out in the Magic Kingdom, Little Brother, Makers, and the forthcoming For the Win. He also discusses his short story collection, Overclocked, and the world of gaming. The interview includes Doctorow's take on information sharing (all his works are available free online), issues of copyright, and how the electronic society may affect artists.

Cory Doctorow: Is Your Search History Really Anonymous?

Complete video at: fora.tv Boing Boing editor and blogger Cory Doctorow warns that Web searches are more difficult to "anonymize" than is commonly believed, citing AOL's accidental data disclosure in 2006. "Would it harm you if those queries were broadcast to the world?" he asks. "I think the answer is an unequivocal yes." ----- The increasing reach of information technology into all areas of life, from social networking websites to data sharing in public services, has thrown up a number of questions about privacy. Information about our medical records, financial circumstances and shopping habits is increasingly likely to be stored in electronic media that are out of our control. Some argue we are seeing a fundamental shift in attitudes to privacy, with a whole new generation growing up at ease with sharing pictures and information about themselves online with loosely-defined "friends." Meanwhile, we are increasingly suspicious of goings-on "behind closed doors," and the demand for privacy often seems a cranky hang-up of those with something to hide. In this context, what does it mean to insist on a right to privacy? Should we look to privacy laws to protect those who are less keen on sharing all? Where is the line between public and private today? Do we need to redraw this line and why is this so politically important? - Battle of Ideas 2009 Cory Doctorow (craphound.com) is a science fiction novelist, blogger and technology activist. Context with Cory Doctorow

Context: Further Selected Essays on Productivity, Creativity, Parenting, and Politics in the 21st Century The Internet's most celebrated hi-tech culture maven returns with this second collection of his infamous articles, essays, and polemics. Now a proud father as well as an international activist, Cory Doctorow writes as passionately about creating Web-inspired theater with his daughter as he does in lambasting the corporations that profit by limiting inherent intellectual freedoms. Doctorow spares no worthy target yet maintains his trademark optimism. Always laser sharp, his vision of a future of free-as-in-freedom creativity is tempered by hoping that artists will benefit from their creations. The New America Foundation's Open Technology Initiative (OTI) held a discussion with Cory Doctorow on his recent book, Little Brother, arguing the importance of intellectual freedom. Cory Doctorow is a science fiction novelist, blogger, and technology activist whom Entertainment Weekly has called the William Gibson of his generation. He is the author of the bestseller Little Brother, and the co-editor of the popular weblog Boing Boing (www.boingboing.net). Doctorow is a contributor to the Guardian, the New York Times, Publishers Weekly, Wired, Locus, and many other newspapers, magazines, and websites.
