Dogs bark and whine behind high chain-link fences, some of them gnawing the wire so hard they bleed at the mouths while cats packed into crowded cages cower in fear if anyone approaches. This isn't a pet store -- it's a meat market in Guangzhou, a city in southern China where eating cats and dogs is common practice. At the Han River Dog Meat Restaurant in central Guangzhou, diners can choose from a long list of menu items, including dog soup, dog steak, dog with tofu and more. In the kitchen, the chef chops up meat for dog hot pot, one of the more popular dishes. Most customers like it spicy. "Dog meat is good for your health and metabolism," explains Li, the hostess who declined to give her first name. "In the summer it helps you sweat." Should cat and dog meat be banned? But these local restaurants may have to find a new specialty. The Chinese government is considering legislation that would make eating cats and dogs illegal. Professor Chang Jiwen of the Chinese Academy of the Social Sciences is one of the law's top campaigners. "Cats and dogs are loyal friends to humans," he said. "A ban on eating them would show China has reached a new level of civilization." Eating dog meat is a long-standing culinary tradition not just in China, but also Korea. Last Friday animal activists joined forces to stop a truck carrying the animals. It's a rare success story for social activism and animal welfare in the country. A group of animal activists and dog lovers in China have rescued hundreds of dogs headed for the dining table. Last Friday, about 200 people blocked a truck on a high way near Beijing. The truck carried 430 dogs bound for the northeastern province of Jilin where they were to be slaughtered and sold as meat. After a 15-hour standoff, the truck driver agreed to hand over the dogs in return for $17000 US dollars. Animal activist Wang Qin says they had to pay for the dogs to save them. [Wang Qin, China Small Animal Protection Association Activist]: "In the end, the police announced through a loudspeaker that what we were doing was against the law. That what they were doing with the dogs was legal and that if we were to keep holding them up they would have to take necessary measures against us. So we had to negotiate with them, since they were not breaking the law but we were, and in the end we had to buy the dogs to save them. It was the only way." Every day over 1000 dogs are inhumanely transported from Thailand to neighbouring countries where they are butchered by cruel and inhumane methods. However, the Soi Dog Foundation and the Thai government are actively working to end this inhumane practice. The conditions under which the dogs are transported and slaughtered are inhumane and many die from suffocation long before they reach neighbouring countries. In reality these are the lucky ones. Those that are still alive are not humanely killed but are tortured often for hours before being skinned alive. The reason for this is that people believe that the pain inflicted leads to the tenderising of the meat. Most shocking of all, is that some dogs are still alive when their fur is removed.

www.bigappledaily.tv Dog meat sold in a Chinatown meat market? It looked like the scoop of the century to James Schugel, a reporter for Minnesota's CBS affiliate WCCO. Schugel reported that a Chinatown shop had sold dog meat, but it's actually just a misunderstanding. See, Schugel was investigating a puppy mill operation in Minnesota that apparently sent their dogs to 336 East Broadway in New York City. When he found the address was a Chinese-run meat market, he instantly leapt to the suspicion that the dogs were ending up in the cooking pot. Schugel called up the staff to confirm his suspicions. But somewhere in the conversation, the words "dog" and "duck" got confused, and the staff confirmed that they do in fact sell meat from all kinds of animals to be eaten. This was enough for Schugel to run off with his report. Husky hash! Schnauzer stew! Keeshond kebabs! Luckily, it quickly became clear that Schugel was barking up the wrong tree. The misunderstanding was cleared up, and WCCO quietly scrubbed the story from their website. The New York Post correctly quoted the employee of Dak Cheong Meat Market as saying "How could we sell dog meat? This isn't China. This isn't Korea!"

Dog Meat Gang Arrested in Thailand (English)
On January 13th a dog farm was raided in Sakon Nakhon, North East Thailand. Over 2000 dogs were seized and the owner was arrested. The government has spent over 10 million Baht on building the dog shelter in Buriram, vaccinations and food but the dog smuggler was fined only 37000B. The court is intending to return the dogs to the dog smuggler on completion of the sentence. He will then be able to continue selling the dogs for meat. Why is tax payer money being used to support the dog meat industry here in Thailand. Please support the police and community here by putting pressure on the government to ban this industry that benefits only a few individuals and gives Thailand a bad reputation around the world.
