Maria Tanase Doina din Maramures

"DOINA" is the most widespread form of Romanian folk music,it is a poetic and often melancholy song, sometimes compared to the blues for that reason. Maria Tanase imitates very well the sounds of this special instrument called "tulnic". The landscape is from the beautiful country of Maramures Romania.

DOINA

DOINA Based on a Poem by Mihai EMINESCU From Tisa to the Nistru's tide All Romania's people cried That they could no longer stir For the rabbled foreigner. From Hotin down to the sea Rides the Muscal cavalry; From the sea back to Hotin Nothing but their host is seen; While from Dorna to Boian Seems the plague has spread its ban; Leaving on our land a scar That you scarcely know it more. Up the mountains down the dale, Have our foes flung far their trail. From Sacele to Satmar Only foreign lords there are; While Roumanians one and all Like the crab must backwards crawl. And reversed is everything: Spring for them is no more spring, Summer is no longer summer, They, at home, the foreign comer. From Turnu up to Dorohoi Does the alien horde deploy And our fertile fields enjoy. With their rumbling trains they come Making all our voices dumb, And our birds so much affray That in haste they fly away. Nothing now but withered thorn Does the Christian's hearth adorn. And the smiling earth they smother; Forest-good Romanian brother - You too bend before their tide, And the very springs they've dried. Sad is this our countryside. Who has sent them to these parts, May the dogs eat out their hearts; May the night their homes efface, And with them this shameless race. Stephen, mighty emperor, You in Putna reign no more. While his holy Prelacy Guards alone the monastery, Where the priests in fervent prayer Of the saints take pious care. Let them toll the bells away, All the night and ...

Nathan Hollander - Bessarabia Doina (Klezmer Harmonium)

A doina by klezmer harmonium player of the 1920s, Nathan Hollander. Writes Bob Cohen of Di Naye Kapelye -- "Nathan Hollander was a klezmer harmonium player in the 1920s and, perhaps, the worst musician ever to record. Predating techno by over seventy years, he began his musical career by owning a recording studio, and then issuing his own 78s mechanically pounding out Yiddish songs and dances on a pump organ. He makes mistakes, his rhythm is absolutely crap, occasionally he stops and forgets the tune --in a word, wonderful! Nobody will ever reissue a Nathan Hollander 78." Josh Horowitz, in his essay about the klezmer accordion (available on the Budowitz website), mentions the "persistent, dedicated, utterly unavoidable recordings of Mr Nathan Hollander [...] He is the perfect performer for ideologists who would like to see folk music as the generic property of the common people, rather than the inspired individual." Horowitz also mentions a doina, maybe this one: "His performance of one doina is a superb example of primordialism; in it we encounter the Ur-doina, which is too difficult to uncover in other's performances, as they are inevitably belaboured with idiosyncratic ornaments and cryptic diversions. Hollander shows us the genuine, pure, almost prenatal Jewish expression of the doina-- and of other genres as well -- by virtue of a disarming delivery."

Doina lui Lucaci sung by Emilian Onciu

Thanks to DYA for translation The Doina is a Romanian musical tune style, having its roots in the music-laments of the Romanian shepherds.Doina is poetic and often melancholic, sometimes compared to the blues for that reason. Doinas are often played with a slow, free rhythm melody against a fast accompaniment pattern in fixed tempo, giving an overall feeling of rhythmic tension. Melodies are sometimes repeated in differing songs, and typically follow a descending pattern. Vasile Lucaciu (January 21, 1852, Apa, Szatmár - November 29, 1922, Satu Mare) was a Romanian Greek-Catholic priest and an advocate of equal rights with the Hungarians in Transylvania. He was a member of the National Romanian Party and a co-author of the Transylvanian Memorandum (1892).

Abe Schwartz and Daughter - Roumanian Doina and Sirba (excellent classic klezmer)

A doina and sirba by Abe Schwartz. The excellent Sirba at the end has been recorded by such artists as Budowitz, Di Naye Kapelye and Adrienne Greenbaum. (FromWikipedia) Abe Schwartz (1881-1963) was a well-known klezmer musician of the 1920s. He was born outside of Bucharest, Romania, and moved to the United States in 1899. He soon distinguished himself as a talented arranger and composer of music, as well as a violinist, pianist, and bandleader. The famous klezmer clarinetist Naftule Brandwein played for a time in Schwartz's ensemble.

DOINA ''Sara buna bade Ioane'' poorly performed by Fluier Fluiera Fluieras

The "Doina" is a Romanian musical tune, having its roots in the old melodic form of the early Romanians, inhabitants of Daco-Thracian Land. Although the form of the Doinas may originate in Ancient Dacia, these highly ornamented and beautiful melodies were developed for centuries through the lamenting musical themes of the Romanian shepherds. Born of intense feelings, vibrant emotions, deep beliefs, grief or longing, "Doina" is poetic, lyrical and melancholic and its free rhythmic style gives the singer a great scope for individual expression. The difference between the Doina and the Ballad is minimal in my view. The present song is called "Sara buna bade Ioane" and is performed by Fluier Fluiera Fluieras No matter how hard I try, my playing cannot match the genuine feelings or the unequivocal technique found in the art of traditional Doina musicians and in the expression of the shepherd's lament. My performance is a compromise and whoever knows what Doina means knows what I am refering to. I can only hope I am not harming too much these melodic treasures with my eager, curious and impatient "fluiera". I see the doina as one of the most precious musical experience of the world and I compare it with a liturgical song

Arkady Gendler sings Doina

Arkady Gendler, 84 year old Yiddish singer from Zaporozhie, Ukraine, is one of the last active Yiddish singers maintaining a repetoire of lesser known songs. Born in Soroki, Moldova (Bessarabia) he sings a beautiful "doina" in romanian Yiddish style at a reheasal for his concert aboard the Dnieper Princess ship. Taken in May 2007 on the Jewish Klezmer Heritage tour organized by Josh Dolgin and family. This was supposed to be a accapella rendition, but things went their own way in rehearsal...

Klezmer Pioneers [1905~1952] - Doina

Klezmer Pioneers: European & American Recordings, 1905-1952 Various Artists Release Date: Jun 1, 1993 Recording Date: 1905-1952 Label: Rounder Review [allmusic.com] A nice collection of very early recordings of klezmer, roughly half from Bucharest and half from New York. These ones cover the span from 1905 to 1952, essentially starting with the advent of the flat-disc format in Eastern Europe (actual cylinder recordings aren't represented here). There's a decent breadth of sound here, ranging from the familiar orchestral sound of New York klezmer bands catering primarily to non-Jewish audiences to the solo tsimbl (hammered dulcimer) of Eastern Europe. The main item to note here is the way that the album catalogs the semi-gradual shift from the importance of the violin as the primary instrument to the reign of the clarinet. There's some beautiful music on this album, but if you're a klezmer fan who's been self-fed the modern klezmer of groups like the Klezmatics and the Klezmonauts, be forewarned that this is a heavily different sound. This is an experiment. It is not ment to hurt in any way the playing of the Taragot Hero Dumitru Farcas in his unmatched performance of ''Doina din Batrani"...although in my opinion Fluiera's intervention made a lot of damage to the profound emotional and nostalgical sentiment of the original song. For example this experimental version does not make me cry. Yet the Dumitru Farcas interpretation and his taragot does make me cry every single time I listen to it.
