The Desert Dome at Henry Doorly Zoo, Omaha Nebraska COST: $31.5 million (includes Desert Dome and Kingdoms of the Night) OPENED: April 2002 The world's largest indoor desert, the Desert Dome, located under the world's largest glazed geodesic dome has become a landmark of Omaha. The Desert Dome features plant and animal life from three deserts of the world: the Namib Desert of southern Africa, the Red Center of Australia and the Sonoran Desert of the southwest United States. The Desert Dome contains 84000 square feet on two levels (42000 square feet on each level). Located beneath the Desert Dome exhibit is the Kingdoms of the Night, the world's largest nocturnal exhibit. Mechanical Facts of the Desert Dome The world's largest glazed geodesic dome stands 13 stories tall. The top of the dome is 137 feet above the main level. The Giraffe complex at Henry Doorly Zoo, Omaha Nebraska. OPENED: 1981 Designed to resemble an African hut, the Giraffe Complex is made of fluted block construction with a shake shingle roof. Built in 1981, the $1.1 million building has 15000 square feet of floor space. Along with giraffes, some small animals and various birds are also on display inside the Giraffe Complex. The Building Inside the Giraffe Complex, unique, long-range infrared heating warms the building. Mercury vapor lamps provide supplementary light, while windows and skylights provide natural lighting. The main viewing windows measure 17 ft. x 11 ft. each and weigh approximately one ton each. The 32 ft. high ceiling is lined with cedar. Grooved concrete flooring has silicon carbide added for traction and to help keep the giraffes feet trimmed. Its slight slope speeds daily cleaning and drainage. Other safety features include squeeze gates to restrain the giraffes for routine medical treatments and a crane for lifting a fallen animal. Food baskets, at a height of nine feet, can be filled from an elevated keeper walkway. Two doors, 5 ft. x 16 ft. provide access to the corral and veldt areas. A second holding area is not on public display. A fence with a gate divides the viewing area to separate giraffes. Nine indoor pens encircle the giraffe enclosure, three of which are open to public view. These are used for winter holding of smaller hoof stock and birds. Outdoor animals, birds and more at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha Nebraska. One can spend a whole day there and still not see everything! OPENED: 1981 The hoofstock row displays pastures of hoofed animals from all over the world. Most hoofstock are located along the south side of Omaha's Zoo. Dama Gazelle The dama gazelle is the largest of the true gazelles. Both sexes have tightly ringed horns that appear lyre-shaped from the front and slightly S-shaped from the side. They are lightly built, with a long neck. Desert fringes of Southern Morocco and Senegal to Sudan are the home of this migratory species. Sable antelope The sable antelope is a large antelope characterized by its scythe-like horns. The horns are strongly ridged, rising vertically from the head then sweeping backwards in a pronounced curve, remaining parallel to each other. Sable antelope are found from Equatorial Africa, through Kenya to South Africa in brush forest, meadows with scattered trees and fringe forests along rivers, avoiding extensive open grass plains. The sable antelope's numbers are declining drastically due to loss of habitat and hunting. Grevy's Zebra The Grevy's zebra is native to Northern Kenya, Ethiopia and Somalia. They are characterized by narrow stripes of dark brown or black. They prefer the sub-desert country and dry bushed grassland where they mingle with other species, such as wildebeest, gazelles, and ostriches. A quick stroll through the Butterfly & Insect Pavilion at the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha NE August 16, 2009. OPENED: May 2008 ARCHITECT: John Armknecht of Stanley J. How Architects CONTRACTOR: Kiewit Construction The Berniece Grewcock Butterfly and Insect Pavilion is a 14000 square foot total immersion exhibit located between the Scott Aquarium and the Giraffe Complex. From the sky, the exhibit resembles a winged insect. Butterfly Conservatory This 2450 square foot area features 10 foot high glass sidewalls allowing the maximum amount of light inside the exhibit. This natural light and large trees, rocks and water elements are all critical components needed to simulate a natural habitat and important to stimulate natural butterfly behaviors. Conservation Promenade Located in the Butterfly Conservatory, the promenade winds past numerous waterfalls and over streams, through lush vegetation and loops around the giant Amazon water lily pool. The pool features a stilt root tree supporting a floating walkway for visitors to travel through the roots and get an up-close view of the giant South American water lilies. Many species of exquisite butterflies and moths including the beautiful Blue Morpho, Zebra Longwing, and Painted Ladies fly among visitors. Micro-habitats are displayed along the Conservation Promenade featuring many endangered amphibians the Zoo is currently working with in response to the global amphibian crisis. A visit to the Scott Aquarium at Omaha's Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha Nebraska. COST: $16 million OPENED: April 1, 1995 The 71000 square foot Walter and Suzanne Scott Kingdoms of the Seas Aquarium features realistic displays of aquatic habitats from polar regions, temperate oceans, coral reefs and the Amazon. Walking through the aquarium offers visitors a number of unique and exciting experiences. Penguins and Puffins After a visual display of underwater scenes in the lobby, visitors can see Arctic puffins in an above- and below-water exhibit featuring a 20-foot high cliff nesting site. The Antarctic penguins can be seen through a 60-foot long, 25-foot high window extending both above and below water. The exhibit includes Antarctic rock, water and man-made snow, all kept at a temperature between 30 - 35 degrees Fahrenheit. This exhibit is capable of producing 20 tons of man-made snow per day using four snow machines. Penguins, ranging from king penguins (as tall as a five-year-old child) and gentoo penguins, to little rockhopper penguins, inhabit this frigid environment. Little blue penguins, native to the warmer climate of Australia, are displayed outside the aquarium in the warmer months. Visitors can enjoy the thrill of being lifted in an open-air chairlift to spectacular tree-top views, while traveling from the Berniece Grewcock Butterfly and Insect Pavilion to Pachyderm Hill. Guests soar over popular exhibits including the giraffe veldt, cheetah yard, Garden of the Senses, the lagoon, monkey island, elephants and rhinos before a gentle touchdown. Skyfari has approximately 78 ski-lift-style chairs riding a system built to carry 780 riders per hour in each direction. Secured on towers rising up to 40 feet, the chairs are connected to nearly 3200 feet of wire rope. Skyfari travels 200 feet per minute while most ski lifts travel 600 feet per minute. A round-trip ride takes a leisurely 20 minutes.
