JavaScript: The Good Parts

Google Tech Talks Web Exponents presented by Doug Crockford February 27, 2009 blog post: google-code-updates.blogspot.com JavaScript is a language with more than its share of bad parts. It went from non-existence to global adoption in an alarmingly short period of time. It never had an interval in the lab when it could be tried out and polished. JavaScript has some extraordinarily good parts. In JavaScript there is a beautiful, highly expressive language that is buried under a steaming pile of good intentions and blunders. The best nature of JavaScript was so effectively hidden that for many years the prevailing opinion of JavaScript was that it was an unsightly, incompetent abomination. This session will expose the goodness in JavaScript, an outstanding dynamic programming language. Within the language is an elegant subset that is vastly superior to the language as a whole, being more reliable, readable and maintainable. Frederick Douglass

Frederick Douglass (1818-95) was a prominent American abolitionist, author and orator. Born a slave, Douglass escaped at age 20 and went on to become a world-renowned anti-slavery activist. His three autobiographies are considered important works of the slave narrative tradition as well as classics of American autobiography. Douglass' work as a reformer ranged from his abolitionist activities in the early 1840s to his attacks on Jim Crow and lynching in the 1890s. For 16 years he edited an influential black newspaper and achieved international fame as an inspiring and persuasive speaker and writer. In thousands of speeches and editorials, he levied a powerful indictment against slavery and racism, provided an indomitable voice of hope for his people, embraced antislavery politics and preached his own brand of American ideals.

JFK and the UNSPEAKABLE: James Douglass, Oliver Stone, Lisa Pease (Ep. 1 of 5)

EPISODE 1 (of 5) A panel discussion with author James W. Douglass (JFK AND THE UNSPEAKABLE: WHY HE DIED AND WHY IT MATTERS), filmmaker Oliver Stone (JFK) and noted JFK researcher Lisa Pease. Moderated by: Robert Ellsberg. Recorded live on November 8, 2010 (the 50th anniversary of the election of JFK) at the Saban Theatre, Los Angeles. At the height of the Cold War, JFK risked committing the greatest crime in human history: starting a nuclear war. Horrified by the specter of nuclear annihilation, Kennedy gradually turned away from his long-held Cold Warrior beliefs and toward a policy of lasting peace. But to the military and intelligence agencies in the US, who were committed to winning the Cold War at any cost, Kennedy's change of heart was a direct threat to their power and influence. Once these dark "Unspeakable" forces recognized that Kennedy's interests were in opposition to their own, they tagged him as a dangerous traitor, plotted his assassination, and orchestrated the subsequent cover-up.

There he learned how to operate the studio's custom made 16-channel console and observed, was trained by, as well as worked with some of the greatest engineers, producers and record moguls including Tom Dowd, Arif Mardin, Jerry Wexler and Ahmet Ertegun. For his first time behind the faders, he was encouraged by Wexler to engineer the session recording for a demo of a new band. He went on to work with great Atlantic Recording artists such as Aretha Franklin, Hall & Oates, Roberta Flack, Donny Hathaway, Foreigner, Led Zepellin and AC/DC to name a few. During the 1980′s, Douglass continued to hone his engineering skills while also taking on the role as producer. He engineered and produced established artists including The Rolling Stones, Slave, Odyssey, Roxy Music and Gang of Four. 1865 Frederick Douglass Speech Produced By Leroy Hyter

This video is an excerpt from one of Frederick Douglass' most powerful speeches entitled "What The Black Man Wants." The performance of this speech was taken from a CD recording produced by Leroy Hyter, read by actor Michael Wright and musically scored by Leroy Hyter. also entitled "Frederick Douglass: What The Black Man Wants." I produced a video of these historical images to bring life to the prophetic words of Douglass as he urges the Abolitionist of his time just two years after the Emancipation of the slaves and during the close of the Civil War. to fight for the civil rights of the newly freed slaves as strongly as they fought for their freedom. Stating that freedom with out rights is not freedom at all. Warning them also that if the equal rights issue wasn't dealt with properly at the beginning of freedom for the slaves. It would be centuries before it would be resolved. Was he ever so right. Enjoy!

In the last two decades, the digital revolution and the Internet have enabled us to quickly develop new photographic processes, rapidly altering our definition of photography. One might even say that the present state of photography is similar to that of the time of its invention, when the form's emerging cultural significance swiftly expanded as a result of technological innovations. The majority of restaurants Sameer visits are "Zabiha-Halal" restaurants. This means if Sameer is eating meat then he has inquired if the restaurant serves meat that is slaughtered and prepared according to Islamic Laws (and prepared using halal ingredients). Sameer does not in any way guarantee the meat is Zabihah-Halal, he does his best to ask and inquire if it is.
