Attack of the Drones - USA

Iran claims to have reverse engineered US drone To see more go to www.youtube.com Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com They can move together in swarms, build towers, dance, throw and catch, assess targets and soon will even make their own decisions. Both in war and at home, drones are developing fast and gaining control. The screens at a US air force base lock onto a civilian car driving along a road in New Mexico. "We don't simulate or actually engage them, it is just training to follow a moving target." The question, "with their permission?" is met with an embarrassed pause and the faltering reply, "we're just following them with a camera". Rapidly becoming acceptable practice, increasingly police are also using drones to survey civilian areas for criminals. The US air force are now training more 'desk pilots' than traditional pilots, raising concerns that war is becoming "just a big computer game", allowing pilots to kill a few Taliban fighters and then go home for dinner. Nathan Wessler, a civil rights lawyer, strongly argues that the US using drones to kill targets in countries like Yemen despite not being in a state of war with them could lead to serious repercussions. "It is really a dangerous precedent. The technology of drones is not that complicated and there are dozens of nations developing it." And these robots are advancing. Future drones will be able to independently find targets and decide to attack. As Iran lays its hands on a US spy ...

Drones to patrol US protests?

In January of 2012, the US Congress passed legislation that will open up the US sky to unmanned drones. The robotic aircraft will be used for military and police operations and will add to America's current arsenal of around 7000 drones. According to some accounts, peaceful protest might be a reason that feds would deploy the unmanned craft. There are currently 300 active drone permits in the US, but will that soon swell out of control? Amie Stepanovich, a member of the National Security Council for EPIC, joins us for more. The Drones - Jezebel

Formed in Melbourne, The Drones are a magical but terrifying ride toward the edge of danger...sometimes chaotic and stern, sometimes melodic and joyful. Emerging as one of the best new bands in Australia, the combination of Mike Noga (drums) Fiona Kitschin (bass) Gareth Liddiard (vocals/guitar) Rui Pereira (guitar) have released the follow-up their 2005 album Wait Long By The River and the Bodies of Your Enemies Will Float By, entitled Gala Mill and released through ATP/Recordings. Recorded in a mill on an isolated 10000 acre farm on Tasmania's east coast, Gala Mill is an album full of extremes - moments of stark, ghostly beauty set against outbursts of the dark, intense noise for which the band is renowned. The album's sense of place is palpable - barking dogs and birdsong are heard between tracks, and the island's history and atmosphere resonate through the songs. Infused with a rich sense of history and yet utterly modern, both thought-provoking and viscerally compelling, Gala Mill marks the welcome return of one of Australia's most intelligent, innovative and important bands. www.thedrones.com.au www.atpfestival.com
'Stop the drones!': US ignores Pakistan plea

The rift in US-Pakistani relations looks set to widen after Washington failed to assure the once close ally, that it would end drone attacks on Pakistani territory. Islamabad's demands fell on deaf ears though, during the visit of the US special envoy, who's in Pakistan amid efforts to mend fractured ties. Relations between the two derailed following the US raid that killed Osama bin Laden, and a NATO airstrike that left 24 Pakistani soldiers dead. As Obama Expands Drone War, Activists & Victims' Advocates Join DC Summit on Civilian Toll

DemocracyNow.org - We speak with Pakistani lawyer, Shahzad Akbar, who represents families of civilians killed in US drone strikes. After first being denied a visa, he is in Washington, DC, to attend a Drone Summit organized by human rights groups to call attention to the lethal rise in the number of drone strikes during the Obama administration. The human rights group, Reprieve, estimates up to 2283 people have been killed by unmanned US drones in Pakistan since 2004. The summit comes as the United States pursues a radical expansion of how it carries out drone strikes inside Yemen. The so-called "signature" strike policy went into effect earlier this month allowing the US to strike without knowing identity of the targets, and at least one attack has already been launched. We're also joined by Medea Benjamin, the cofounder of CODEPINK, one of the organizers of this weekend's summit. Her new book is called, "Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control," which also examines the rise in the use of drones for domestic surveillance in the United States. Americans Finally Waking Up to Spy Drones

A mystery object, thought to be a military or law enforcement drone, flying in controlled airspace over Denver almost caused a catastrophic mid air crash with a commercial jet Monday. The pilot of the Cessna jet radioed air traffic controllers to warn them that "A remote controlled aircraft" had flown past his plane far too close for comfort. "Something just went by the other way ... About 20 to 30 seconds ago. It was like a large remote-controlled aircraft." the pilot said in the transmission that was captured on the live air traffic audio website liveatc.net. The craft was reported as being about 8000 feet above sea level, or about 2800 feet above the ground, at the time the pilot reported the seeing it. It did not show up on radar. The type of drones used by NATO typically fly at 10000 feet and below. Other tactical military drones can fly up to 18000 feet. Denver 9News reports that the Federal Aviation Administration is investigating the incident, which it has described as potentially "extremely dangerous." "The threat is there from a collision standpoint," an FAA spokesman said. In a statement to USA Today, the agency said: "The FAA is investigating the incident and will try to positively identify the object the Citation pilot reported, where it came from and who was operating it." Aviation expert and former NTSB investigator Greg Feith told 9News that he believed the object could have been either a military or police drone. www.infowars.com by Steve Watson www ...

US worried intercepted stealth drone will aid Iran

US officials have acknowledged that the military lost control of one of its stealth drones while it was flying a mission over western Afghanistan. Iran's official IRNA news agency reported on Sunday that Iran's armed forces had shot down the RQ-170, known as the Sentinel, and are now in possession of it. US officials rejected that claim, saying there were no indications the plane was shot down. In either case, officials said this would be the first Sentinel lost by the US.
