merry christmas and happy holidays created by bd594, toronto, canada This project was really difficult, it was 70% timing and 30% execution. There are alot of YouTube videos with floppies and stepper motors playing songs. These motors have a quick response time because they are not under a heavy load. The problem with a flatbed scanner is moving the large carriage head. It was not designed to move quickly and when it is playing music you will notice the head changes directions. This is to prevent the carriage from smashing into the chassis. As the notes are playing the carriage head has to periodically change direction and this can add many seconds to a 3 or 4 minute song. This takes extra programming to compensate for these delays. As for the drums they are just a couple of solenoids connected to a pulley system in order to ampilfy the movement. The solenoids are used and have very slow response time, you may notice a few beats are missed during the drum rolls. Believe me when I say I have a new respect for drummers. enjoy

Afrikafestival Hertme - Burundi Drummers
The Royal Drummers of Burundi is a percussion ensemble from Burundi. Their performances are a part of ceremonies such as births, funerals, and coronations of mwami (Kings). Drums (called karyenda) are sacred in Burundi, and represent the mwami, fertility and regeneration. The Royal Drummers use drums made from hollowed tree trunks covered with animal skins. In addition to the central drum, called Inkiranya, there are Amashako drums which provide a continuous beat, and Ibishikiso drums, which follow the rhythm established by the Inkiranya. The performance of the Royal Drummers has been the same for centuries, and their techniques and traditions are passed down from father to son. The members of the ensemble take turns playing the Inkiranya, dancing, resting, and playing the other drums, rotating throughout the show without interruptions. At the start of their performance, the drummers enter balancing the heavy drums on their heads and singing and playing. There are some extra members who carry ornamental spears and shields and lead the procession with their dance. They then perform a series of rhythms, some accompanied by song, and exit the stage the same way, carrying the drums on their heads and playing. Amazing Japan Child Drummers - TOHO TAIKO CLUB
This is a demonstration of traditional Japanese drumming performed by members of the sixth grade class at my daughter's elementary school. This team is called "TOHO TAIKO CLUB". Drums are called taiko in Japan where drumming has a long tradition within the spheres of entertainment, religion and warfare. The Japanese have produced several distinct drum styles of various sizes, most of which are played with a stick (though hand drums are also used). Traditional drummers may perform alone or in the company of wind and string musicians. Ensemble style taiko performances called kumi-daiko (as seen in this video) are a relatively recent development in the world of Japanese drumming and a style which has gained the attention of many outside Japan. Kumi-daiko performances are typically very impressive with numerous drummers beating out distinct rhythms on various sized taiko. The drummers can produce deep, resonant tones which carry for long distances and produce an unforgettable and almost visceral experience in the hearer. Taiko drum heads are made of cowhide dried and tightly stretched before being attached to the drum by iron nails (byou-uchi daiko style) or sewn onto iron rings (tsukushime-daiko style). Drum heads may be used for several years before needing to be re-stretched, though the cowhide is normally discarded after one or two stretches. Most Japanese drums are formed from the limb or even the trunk of the Japanese Elm (keyaki) tree while other types of wood are also <b>...</b>

Karen Carpenter: Kickass Drummer (Drum Solos)
Karen Carpenter was best known for her hauntingly beautiful singing voice, but she considered herself a "drummer who sang." (more below) Karen first became fascinated with the drums after joining the high school marching band to get out of gym class. She persuaded the band director to let her switch from glockenspiel to the drums, despite warnings that "girls don't play drums." Carpenter recalled, "That is such an overused line, but I started anyway. I picked up a pair of sticks, and it was the most natural-feeling thing I've ever done." She learned the drums surprisingly quickly. Her first drum teacher was a boy in the drumline obsessed with Buddy Rich. Later, she studied with Bill Douglass, a drummer for Benny Goodman and Art Tatum. At the age of 16, she drummed jazz instrumentals with her pianist brother in the Richard Carpenter Trio, winners of the 1966 Hollywood Bowl Battle of the Bands. Earlier the same year, Karen had scored a solo record contract, but the label folded after releasing only one of her singles. In 1968, the Richard Carpenter Trio also won on "Your All-American College Show," this time with Karen singing as well as drumming. In 1969, the Carpenters released their first album, and thanks to 1970's "Close to You," they became superstars. In the early years, Karen stayed behind the drums and sang at the same time, but was pressured to give up her beloved drums to sing front and center, at least on the ballads. Kodo - "O-Daiko" - HD (japanese drummers - Taiko - tambours géants Japon)
Kodō (鼓童) ( www.agoravox.tv « Kodo, un battement de coeur japonais rythmé par le taiko » : voir l'article et les vidéos) est un groupe de percussionnistes japonais originaire de l'ile de Sado. Son nom signifie « battement de coeur » et « enfant du tambour » en japonais. ( fr.wikipedia.org ). Le collectif Kodo est formé en 1981 par d'anciens membres du groupe Ondekoza à la suite d'un différent entre Tagayasu (fondateur d'Ondekoza) et ses musiciens. Il perpétue et réinvente la tradition musicale japonaise, en explorant toutes les possibilités offertes par le taiko, tambour de peau tendue sur bois utilisé dans les fêtes traditionnelles. Il parcourt le monde depuis le début des années 1980 pour diffuser son message « d'humanité partagée, de conscience environnementale et de paix ».
