A new hobby of mine is dying yarn. You can easily dye wool with kool-aid or food coloring. In this video I'm using kool-aid. Step 1. Put 1 to 2 inches of luke warm water in your crock pot and a "glug" of vinegar. Place your skein of yarn in the crock pot. Step 2. Turn the crock on high and cover. Leave it until steam it starts steaming, try not to let it boil. That could cause it to felt. Step 3. Place kool-aid into a heat proof container. I like measuring cups, they are easiest to pour from. Cover with about 1/2 a cup of boiling water. Stir to dissolve. Let the kool-aid cool until close in temperature to the yarn. Step 4. Pour the coloring on top of the yarn in the pattern you like. They will mix a little were they touch. The more dye/liquid you have in the crock the more likely they are to mix together. Step 5. Turn the crock down to low and cover. Leave it until the yarn has absorbed all the dye and the water is clear. Step 6. Turn off the heat and let yarn cool completely. Step 7. Remove yarn and rinse well, until the water rinses clear. Step 8. Drain and gently press out as much water in the sink as you can. Lay yarn on a towel, roll up and press out the rest of the water. Hang to dry. Locks of wool carefully placed in a pyrex pan are soaked in vinegar water and then food color is applied straight from the squeeze bottle. When microwaved to set the color the fiber is perfect for flick carding and spinning. While I have used food color from a squirt bottle you can use paste colors or even chemical dyes to do the same thing, but if using chemical dyes you must take proper precautions.

Dying with koolaid is easy and fun. Because Koolaid is a food there is no danger from chemicals and you can use your kitchen dishes for the dying. I have limited myself to three colors, but you can use as many as you like. This video is done with koolaid, but you can use food color or even chemical dyes (taking the proper precautions) to do the same kind of thing.

Much like a few of the other tunes on the album, I had scant time to rehearse this one because I overbooked myself. As a result you'll see some quick, jerky motions and some 'telegraphed movements' that don't actually result in me hitting anything, haha. As a fun aside, I'll mention that I tracked this while snowed in and I didn't even track it with Taylor, but his assistant Will (he mixed the drums for my tune "Project 15"). Taylor wasn't present, time was running out and there was still work to be done (this was the last tune I tracked for the whole session). It was scary though, for the power kept going in and out; watch for the light flicker around 3:23! As a result of triumphing over so many odds, Will and I celebrated the only proper way - with a nice, hot pizza from a pizzeria within walking distance. When I heard this in demo form, for some reason I felt that a drum intro would be appropriate. I stuck to the time signature utilized within the riff that kicks off the tune (6-4), but delayed the commencement by a 16th note, messing with the listeners' head and perception of the downbeat. We suggest using a cotton shirt if you want brighter color and a silk or polyester shirt for a more faded look. We used the same technique for the cotton shirt.
