Warm up Exercises Part 3

www.JandDFitness.com This video completes our 3 part series on warm up exercises, all the things you do before the workout. After you complete your dynamic stretches I recommend that you spend 5-7 minutes doing a little bodywork. Bodywork consists of foam rolling with a roller, massage stick or addressing trigger points with the Thera-cane. This helps reduce muscle tension and fascia restrictions. Fascia is like the glue that holds your muscles together. When these muscles get bound up, it affects the way they fire and contract. I compare bodywork like flossing your teeth, at first it hurts and you don't see the benefit. But long term it makes you healthier and can help avoid unwanted doctor visits. In this video I demonstrate massage techniques with the foam roller, Thera-cane, and massage stick. Each serves their purpose. What I recommend you do is alternate between workouts. You should be able to complete this process in 5-7 minutes. That being said, dynamic stretching and bodywork should be completed in 12-15 minutes. I know this may seem like a waste of time for many people initially. But I promise you the long term benefits are huge. Who doesn't want better workouts and less injuries? To order a foam roller, Thera-cane, or massage stick please visit our website at www.JandDFitness.com. 30. Dynamic Stretches

www.excelphysicaltherapy.com- Physical therapists have long used 'stretching' as a key component in exercise programs. The classic passive stretch has involved getting into position and holding the stretch for 30 seconds, repeating 3 times. However, that way of stretching does not apply to all populations, especially the more athletic or active population. We are finding much more success teaching an Active Dynamic Warm-up also known as Dynamic Stretching. What's the difference? In a sustained, passive stretch one is looking to change muscle length/stiffness which is not the most appropriate technique to use before engaging in a sport such as running, cycling or swimming! Dynamic Stretching encourages you to contract muscle groups throughout their range while challenging your neuromuscular system (balance). This type of stretching primes your muscles for performance by replicating the motions that will be used during training. It is much more sport specific and effective in comparison to the classic way of stretching. Warming up and stretching are key components to injury prevention, but are often cut out of training due to time constraints. Active Dynamic Warm-up exercises consists of multiple joint stretching which elevates your heart rate and gets the blood pumping. Instead of warming up for 5-10 minutes before training and stretching for 5-10 minutes after, this allows you to get both components in at one time!Excel Physical Therapy and Fitness is the Delaware ...

Exercise Warm Up

www.JandDFitness.com This video is part one of a three part series of what you do before the workout. In this series we'll cover an Exercise warm up. I prefer a dynamic warm-up, followed by bodywork you should do prior to hitting the workout. I have to credit Mark Verstegen of Athletes Performance with explaining it best. "If your muscles are tight and bound up, how can we expect for proper movement patterns in the workout?" I have restructured my training sessions, so that the first 10 minutes are dedicated to warming up coupled with myofascial massage techniques (foam rolling, rolling out feet, thera cane). This video will show part one of my dynamic warm up. I will perform a calf stretch rotating my body in the transverse plane of motion. The next stretch is a knee tuck or pull-in with ankle extension in the opposing leg, great for loosening up the glutes and ankle joints. I finish the video by doing a straight leg march lengthening the hamstrings. Next week we'll continue this warm up with 2 more stretches, so stay tuned. Warm Up Exercises part 2

www.JandDFitness.com This is part two in our 3 part series of what you do before you exercise. This video shows 2 dynamic stretches that you can include in your warm up exercises. The first stretch is for the quadriceps hip flexors. This stretch is good for 99.9% of the general population. We sit when we eat, drive, watch TV, work on our computers, and for some of us -all day at work. Due to the constant sitting our hip flexors have a tendency to get very tight. I have yet to train someone who doesn't benefit from this stretch. It is dynamic so you need to drive the hips forward. I recommend 10-12 reps on each leg. Start with your foot elevated on a block initially, and then progress to a bench as you see me demonstrating in the video. Next up is a stretch for the shoulders and pectoralis. All you need is a stick or dowel rod. You're going to go overhead and back as far as your range of motion will permit. Keep your arms straight. Again, this stretch is dynamic not static so keep the stick moving. So these 5 stretches complete our warm up exercises. You should be able to finish them in 7-8 minutes. Next up in the series is bodywork. Hockey Dynamic Warm-up 1 of 2

For more tips and videos sign up for the Score100goals newsletter at score100goals.com I try to keep my videos under 3-4 minutes because I know I lose peoples attention after that. But this video walks you through an exact dynamic warm-up that you can use before a game/practice/off-ice workout. Here is an excerpt from my book 7 Pre-Game Habits of Pro Hockey Players explaining why this is so important before a game. Dynamic Warm-up I was doing it all wrong my whole career. Before every workout, practice, and game of my life, I went through a number of static stretches to loosen up the muscles. More often than not I was pressed for time and went through a quick static stretching routine of the large muscles such as the hamstring and quadriceps on the ice without a warm-up. Wrong. Science has found a better way. In fact, according to a study by the University of Nevada, Las Vegas, using static stretching alone before a workout will actually hurt your performance. (Im glad I found this out 8 years after I stopped playing.) A good warm-up begins with getting a little sweat going and increasing blood flow to your joints and tendons which will make them more receptive before beginning the exercises. The reasoning behind the switch from static stretching to dynamic stretching to get the muscles ready for the ice is that muscles are more pliable and will react better, with limited negative consequences, when warm. Start with an aerobic activity for 3-5 minutes that warms up your ...

Phillies Jimmy Rollins Dynamic Warmup Baseball Workout

MVP baseball Hall of Famer Jimmy Rollins of the Philadelphia Phillies and trainer to the 'stars' Aaron Sistrunck discuss how to do a 'dynamic warmup'. ""Back in the day your couch would just tell you to go out there and do a jumping jack and then go out there and strech. But you shouldn't really do stretches when your body is cold. Dynamic warm-up is really good because: it gets your heart rate up, gets your body warmed up. You have to look at your muscles being like a rubber band, if you just come out of the refrigerator then its going to pop. What you have to do is make sure that you warm the body up, get the blood level up, and the temperature up, and then gradually get your body into doing dynamic stretching, then do the static stretching."" ""You know your blood is starting to move, your muscles are starting to warm up now the elasticy comes, so you can get a real good stretch. After that squats with the twist to loosen them back up. Basically the things you are doing with the movement, because everything you do in sports comes with a movement, nothing is standstill, a change of direction and a turn-back or something, you have to make sure your muscles are all warmed up with those movements to get to the exercises.""

How to Perform a Dynamic Warm-up using Mobility and Activation Exercises

www.workoutmuse.com Mobility describes the ability of a joint, or a series of joints, to move through an ideal range of motion. Though mobility relies on flexibility, it requires an additional strength, stability, and neuromuscular control component to allow for proper movement. Activation is often paired with mobility because many mobility exercises activate key, and often dormant, pillar stabilizers in your hips, core, and shoulders.
