Interview With Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan FAREED ZAKARIA GPS 01/02

FAREED ZAKARIA, HOST: This is "GPS," the "Global Public Square." Welcome to our viewers in the United States and around the world, I'm Fareed Zakaria. It was UN week in New York, and we bumped into all sorts of world leaders. We have three on the show today. Must-see conversations. We'll begin with Turkey's prime minister. In making a break with Israel, he's altering crucial alliances in the Middle East and all over the world. He will explain his reasoning. Then, is the new Russia a friend or a foe? Sergey Lavrov served the Kremlin back when the USSR was our sworn enemy. He is now Russia's foreign minister. And later, the man who might save the euro. Jose Manuel Barroso is the president of the European Commission. He is faced with a tough task as the euro zone crisis worsens. All that, plus we'll tell you about political pirates and why they scored a surprising victory. But first, here's my take. This was UN week, and there was some drama over the issue of the Palestinian bid for statehood. But the real action is taking place now as the world's finance ministers and leaders meet to talk about money. I think it's fair to say that we are confronting the worst economic moment since the days after the collapse of Lehman Brothers in 2008. Growth has slowed in Europe and the United States, and it is slower even in the bubbling, emerging markets. Some European countries now have deep problems with their debt burdens that appear unmanageable, and that problem is spreading to ...

Turkish PM Erdogan Slams Shimon Peres For Israeli Killings And Walks Off Stage

With English Translation Fair Use Policy, Source: World Economic Forum The Turkish prime minister, Mr. Erdogan, stormed out of a heated debate at the World Economic Forum in Davos after slamming the position of Israeli President, Mr. Shimon Peres, over Israel's offensive in the Gaza Strip. Recep Tayyip Erdogan walked out of the televised debate on Thursday, after the moderator refused to allow him to rebut the Israeli president's justification about the war that left about 1300 Gazans dead. Before storming out, Erdogan told Shimon Peres, the Israeli president: "You are killing people." Peres told Erdogan during the heated panel discussion that he would have acted in the same manner if rockets had been falling on Istanbul. Moderator David Ignatius, a Washington Post columnist, then told Erdogan that he had "only a minute" to respond to a lengthy monologe by Pires. Erdogan said: "I find it very sad that people applaud what you said. There have been many people killed. And I think that it is very wrong and it is not humanitarian." Ignatius twice attempted to finish the debate, saying, "We really do need to get people to dinner." Erdogan then said: "Thank you very much. Thank you very much. Thank you very much. I don't think I will come back to Davos after this."

Recep Erdogan "Israel cannot be trusted!!"

The first time when it confirmed Israel had committed serious crimes during the event; then, when its forgiving tone brought serious protests from Turkey and the Palestinians. Israel's main ally in the area — Turkey — has since begun a strategic shift in its alliances. Things are not only changing rapidly for Israel, they are doing so in tandem. The slow deterioration in Israel's relations with Egypt is becoming more violent by the day, while the same is true for Israel's relations with Turkey. As of now, Turkey and Egypt have no ambassadors in Tel Aviv, and Israel has recalled its ambassadors from their capitals as well. What's next? Turkey and Israel do not share a border; violence like that witnessed these days along the Israeli-Egyptian border won't be seen in this case. However, a sea war for hegemony on the Eastern Mediterranean may begin soon. Smallish scuffles related to the recently found gas fields near the disputed Israeli-Lebanese maritime border may take place with the participation of the mighty Turkish fleet. This is not just speculation; Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan said last week that Turkey will boost navy patrols in Mediterranean. In an immediate response, Israeli Energy Minister Uzi Landau said Israel will secure its rigs and further develop the gas fields. Keeping the pressure on this issue, Turkey has repeatedly complained about the energy deals between Israel and Greek Cyprus. Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan UN General Assembly Speech 2-2

Erdogan: Israel is source of instability in Middle East Turkish Prime Minister, Rajab Tayyeb Erdogan, confirmed in a speech to the UN General Assembly Thursday evening that Israel is the source of instability in the Middle East. "The UN should be a power of right and justice for peace not war," he pointed out, adding that "In order to achieve these criteria, there is a fundamental problem which is the Israeli-Arab conflict." Erdogan considered that interests and politics prevent justice to be achieved, pointed out that Israel does not implement the UN resolutions, wondering if the UN Security Council has the power to impose the same sanctions on Israel as it imposes them on Sudan. "Israel is producing nuclear bombs and nobody takes action against it, but if any state does that, the international community immediately imposes sanctions," he state. He stressed that Israel must respect others in order to maintain its security, saying that the ongoing Israeli violence should not be continued. "Israel did not comply with 89 international resolutions," said he. "We must impose peace by power because it is the means of the UN," emphasized he, considering, "Turkey wants peace to spread in the Middle East, and we have no problem with the Israel people but with the Israeli government."

Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan UN General Assembly Speech 1 2

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's speech at the UN General Assembly on Thursday was full of criticism of Israel, deepening the rift between the two countries, and the United Nations. In his speech, Erdoğan said Israel should lift the blockade on Palestine, adding a new item to the list of conditions for normalizing relations between Israel and Turkey. Ties between the two have been tense since nine Turkish citizens were killed in an Isreali commando raid on a Gaza-bound aid ship in May 2010. Erdoğan also criticized the UN, saying that it should renew its vision to protect all of humanity's human rights, rather than selectively protecting certain countries' rights. The prime minister earlier demanded an apology from Israel and compensation for families. "It is impossible for us to remain indifferent to the killing of nine of our citizens in international waters," said Erdoğan. "Israel committed a great mistake against a friendly nation, Turkey. The primary source of tension is only the Israeli government." In addition to repeating his criticism of Israel, Erdoğan blamed the UN for falling short on warning Israel of human rights issues. Erdoğan said Israel ignores the United Nations' authority. "It has failed to abide by 89 binding UN resolutions and has ignored hundreds of others. This is a blow to the sense of international justice," he said. The prime minister called on the international community to "pressure Israel to show that they are not above the rule ...

Interview With Turkish Prime Minister Erdogan FAREED ZAKARIA GPS 02/02

(END VIDEOTAPE) (COMMERCIAL BREAK) ZAKARIA: This past week, New York might have seemed to be the center of the world. But the political story that struck me came not from the corridors of the United Nations but thousands of miles away in the city state of Berlin, Germany. You might have heard about the group called "The Pirate Party" that has burst on to Germany's political scene. The "Economist" magazine jokingly writes that it sounds like a party whose name was dreamed up at Octoberfest, Germany's annual beer festival. Actually, its ideology centers around internet freedom. Its members are tech-savvy youngsters who wear hooded sweatshirts, throw cool parties, and play up their group's name with pirate boats like this one. But don't let the cool facade fool you. They won 9 percent of the vote in Berlin's parliamentary elections. That puts them well ahead of the (inaudible) Free Democratic Party, a long-established party and part of Angela Merkel's established coalition. So what is going on? Well, it turns out their movement was founded in Sweden five years ago with a focus on copyright and patent law. It has since spread to a number of European countries and even the United States. But the German offshoot is broadening its focus and says it is about bringing politics back to the people. Erdogan's Arab Spring tour stops in Libya

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan will continue what has been dubbed his 'Arab Spring' tour when he arrives in Libya later on Friday. Erdogan has been keen to assert Turkey's growing influence in the region after visiting Egypt and Tunisia. Ihsan Dagi, a professor of international relations at the Middle East Technical University in Ankara, said: "Turkey has managed to combine Islam with democracy and a market economy. The interest in his visit must be analysed in the right way." "Erdogan's popularity has nothing to do with his current policies towards Israel. It is rather to do with Turkey's economic and democratic performance." The Turkish premier will meet with NTC Chairman Mustafa Abdel Jalil in Tripoli and is expected to give a speech in the city's Martyrs Square.

Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan's ruling AK party won a third term in Sunday's parliamentary elections. It won just under 50 per cent of the vote, and secured 326 of the 550 seats in parliament. But the AKP will not be able to make unilateral constitutional changes. Does another resounding election victory make Recep Tayyip Erdogan the most successful prime minister in the history of Turkey? Inside Story discusses with Yusuf Kanli, a columnist for the Hurriyet Daily News in Ankara; Nicole Pope, the author of Turkey Unveiled, A History of Modern Turkey in Istanbul; and Mustafa El-Labad, the director of Al Sharq Centre for Regional and Strategic Studies in Cairo.

Erdogan replied to questions of renowned journalist Charlie Rose in New York. Palestine Answering a question on the United States' view on Palestine's application at the UN Security Council, Premier Erdogan said, "we don't know its (the United States') stance. Palestine needs 9 votes at the UN Security Council. If Palestine gets these votes, it would be a pleasing development for the country." Erdogan said that if Palestine could not get votes, it would apply to the General Assembly and then it could lead to a conclusion like Vatican city. Asked what would happen if the United States vetoed Palestine's application, Erdogan said he hoped that the United States would continue the process in accordance with the resolution 181 approved by the UN in 1947.
