Jesus! Couldn't sleep in Ealing last night with the constant sounds of sirens, so looked on the internet to see what was going on. When I got my answer, I went out for an impromptu bike ride. I could not believe what had been happening in Ealing tonight and in the early hours. People brazenly walking around with loot. Smashed windows and looting at Panasonic shop, Specsavers (!), Carphone Warehouse, Wilkinsons and numerous small shops including even the PDSA (but they were kind enough to spare Lidl) in West Ealing. Same thing has happened to Tesco and lots of others in Ealing Broadway. 2 burned out cars in middle of South Ealing road. A hijacked double decker bus driven into a lampost on Grange road. The Budgens opposite the Grove plus the flats above it burned out. A man on Haven Green has been randomly beaten up by a mob - the police were telling me they don't think he's going to survive. Maybe it's time to apologise to the Syrian government and request some advice and assistance. They apparently know better than we do how to deal with rioters. And this AM, from my house, I can hear the clanks and thuds of the scaffolders and builders carrying on with the work they've been doing at a house on my road for the last month, as if nothing has happened. The dustcart has also been and gone, just like it does every Tuesday. Highly bizarre.

Using footage from the 1990's and 2010/2011 and split over 2 films the footage comprises of... *class 117 diesel multiple unit trains, *class 122 'bubble' railcars, *class 253 High Speed trains (HST), *class 165 diesel multple unit trains, *class 332 Heathrow Express trains, *class 360 Desiro Heathrow Connect trains, *several freight / goods trains *D78 subsurface London Underground Stock, *1992 Tube London Underground stock, and more! 1990's footage of the 1st generation diesel multiple units and 'bubble' railcars is mostly in part 1 with a reprise in part 2. Heathrow Express, Class 165 DMU's and the HST's are in both films. Heathrow connect and most Underground footage is only in part 2. Part 2 also includes information on the through Metropolitan District Railway trains to Windsor and the through 'Southend Corridor Express' trains which linked Ealing Broadway with the Essex / east coast town of Southend-On-Sea, and used toilets with retention tanks to avoid fouling the tracks whilst the train was travelling through the tunnels below Central London. Alas the underground trains were not filmed in the 1990's (the District Line service was disrupted for a reason I no longer recall) - the videotape label said "BR done, LT to do" but I did not get around to returning to film the London Transport trains :-( The films were split because of complaints over long films... total footage is about 26 minutes.

Probably the least well known of the Ealing comedies, "Meet Mr Lucifer" was directed by Anthony Pelissier and was the only film directed by him at Ealing. Starring Stanley Holloway, Jack Watling, Joseph Tomelty, Peggy Cummins and Gordon Jackson, the cast also included Kay Kendall & Raymond Huntley. A satire on the impact of television in the lives of ordinary people, the plot line is predictably thin but the film does include some amusing scenes and the fine cast do well with the material. In this clip Joseph Tomelty demonstrates his ability with an abacus to a rather cynical businessman played by Raymond Huntley. By the time of its release in November 1953 the glory days of Ealing comedies were almost over, but for the sake of completeness it would be good to see the film released on dvd. It is currently the only Ealing comedy not available in the UK.

Morning after riots in Ealing ... not trying to be doom & gloom, but just record the damage. A lot of the carnage (burnt out cars for example) had already been cleaned up, and there were volunteers on the street .. just brilliant local people helping clear up already and doing their bit to get things back to normal, amazing stuff.

Studio Canal, the current owners of the legendary films from Ealing Studios, have released most of the films onto dvd in the UK and carried out restorations of some for release on blu-ray. A handful of titles though have not yet been released, and it is to be hoped that the policy of releasing the films will continue until the whole library has been made available. One of the missing films, "I believe in you" is a drama concerning the probation service, with Cecil Parker and Celia Johnson starring as probation officers trying to help a variety of clients, including a couple of youngsters played by Joan Collins and Harry Fowler. Directed by Michael Relph and Basil Bearden, "I believe in you" features an interesting supporting cast that includes Laurence Harvey, Godfrey Tearle, Ada Reeve, Katie Johnson, Ursula Howells, Sidney James, Gladys Henson, & Stanley Escane, who appeared in "Hue and cry" some years earlier with Harry Fowler. Rioters looting and burning Ealing Green - i'd guess between the ages of 13-25. This is after they got moved down the highstreet and broadway, they stayed and trashed all the shops on Ealing Green until about 12.30 before moving down south ealing road, where they set alight to 2 more cars and broke into a bus, drove it 30 yards then crashed it into another parked car. They continued down south ealing road targeting pubs, off-licences and electrical stores where young teens were pinching the TVs and the older just trashing the places. The police created a blockade near the bottom of south ealing road (50 yards from my flat) so they dispersed and continued to west Ealing. Fuck! Sorry the video isn't longer but there were some little shits pinching phones!
