Powers of Ten takes us on an adventure in magnitudes. Starting at a picnic by the lakeside in Chicago, this famous film transports us to the outer edges of the universe. Every ten seconds we view the starting point from ten times farther out until our own galaxy is visible only asa speck of light among many others. Returning to Earth with breathtaking speed, we move inward- into the hand of the sleeping picnicker- with ten times more magnification every ten seconds. Talk title: Come Add Your Voice to an Eames Card! Charles and Ray Eames were a husband and wife team of brilliant designers and thinkers. The iconic Eames chairs were made from wood, plastic, wire and leather combined with wood. The Eameses also designed fourteen significant exhibitions, the most important of which was Mathematica and made over one hundred films. Their best-known film, a voyage from the hand of a sleeping man out into the universe, traveling out by powers of twenty-five and back by powers of fifteen, is still used in brainstorming today. The Eameses also designed toys, such as a solar "do-nothing machine." They imbued the notion that a toy can be a prelude to serious ideas, and that common objects may offer us uncommon beauty. Carla Atwood Hartman, granddaughter of Charles and Ray Eames, has been the Director of Education for the Eames Office since 2004. She collaborates with museums, schools, and the public to extend the creative legacy of Charles and Ray Eames through interactive programming and exhibitions, publications, and product development. While much of her current work focuses on the Eameses, she also loves to use chairs—a singular collecting passion—as teaching tools about design and the design process. Prior to playing at the Eames Office, she enjoyed nine years of museum experience in architecture, design and graphics at the Denver Art Museum.
