A Tribute to Earthworms for Earth Day 2010.avi
Dr. Diana Wehrell-Grabowski shares some basic information about earthworms and their beneficial contributions to the plant and animal kingdoms. In addition, there is video footage of recent hands-on science classes conducted with preschoolers as they explore ecology and earthworm science concepts. Early childhood students made comparisons and contrasts between synthetic and real earthworms characteristics, measured earthworms, observed what surface preferences earthworms have, made models of earthworms, drew earthworms, painted with fishing worms. These same type of explorations can be conducted for elementary through secondary level students with minor modifications, and extending the content complexity. Dr. Diana Wehrell-Grabowski conducts teacher training workshops where teachers explore life and environmental science concepts via hands-on, inquiry-based explorations. Japan Mountain Leech vs. Giant Earthworm
While hiking in rugged mountains of the Japan Southern Alps I happened upon a life and death struggle between a very large earthworm and an equally large Japanese Mountain Leech. This was my first leech encounter in Japan and at the time I knew little about this interesting animal. The Japanese Mountain Leech is called yama-biru in Japanese and is known scientifically as Haemadipsa zeylanica japonica. Mountain Leech are quite at home outside of water and are most often found within dark, moist forests. The animal is especially active during the monsoonal rainy season (when I took this video). Blood sucking leech will readily go after farmers and hikers and will eagerly pursue their prey using a strange form of locomotion in which they toss their bodies end over end in rapid pursuit. They can chew right through socks and are quite relentless in their efforts to get a blood meal. Leeches are even known to drop from trees upon unsuspecting passersby! While some Mountain Leech have mouths designed for sucking, others (like the leech in this video) must swallow their prey whole. ---- Welcome to the the Real Japan Monsters blog. This was a platform game done by Shiny Entertainment in 1994. The story was about an earthworm called Jim engaging normal worm activities for most of his life. But one day an alien robotic suit fell down to earth landing on a farm somewhere in the southern USA. Jim got into this suit and the powerful atomic particles caused him to grow and evolve. Giant Japanese Earthworm
Giant earthworms are legendary in Japan and may have helped spark the interest in ultra-sized monsters which were once a hallmark of Japanese cinema. Reports of enormous ground burrowing beasts were recorded in official records as early as the 18th century, and worms measuring 3 to 5 meters (10 to 15 feet) in length have been spotted in such areas as Hyogo and Okayama prefectures. Unverified reports of still larger worms include testimony of two men who claim to have discovered a piece of a worm measuring 30 cm (1 foot) long and 20 cm (8 inches) in diameter. They calculated the size of the beast to be roughly 10 meters (33 feet)! While hearsay reports must be treated with caution the fact remains that the country of Japan is home to some of the largest ground burrowing creatures on the planet. Worms (vermes) are invertebrates found throughout much of the world and include a wide variety of terrestrial and aquatic species. Most people are familiar with the earth-burrowing worms so popular with fishermen and gardeners though worm species are adapted to a wide variety of careers; including peaceful vegetarians, aggressive hunters and secretive parasites of plant and animals (including humans). The term "worm" is commonly used in referring to animals which are not true worms, such as insect grubs and centipedes. Ah, Earthworm Jim 2. No other game can rival the absurdity of this little morsel. No, not even Katamari Damacy. Don't give me that look. This is level four, "The Villi People" aka "Jim's Now a Blind Cave Salamander." In this level, Jim (an earthworm mutated by a space-suit) must disguise himself as Blind Sally, the blind cave salamander, in order to navigate--swim, swim--through the lower bowels of a planet-sized... thing... whose intestines are, for some reason or none at all, home to strange, exploding intestinal sheep and pinball bumpers. And a game show. And all for the rescue of his love, Princess What's-Her-Name (no, really). Yes, it's THAT kind of game. The music here is the actual in-game background music. It's Beethoven's "Moonlight Sonata," or at least the first movement of it. Anatomical tidbit: "villi" are the fibrous, hairlike things that help absorb food in your intestines! Kind of like the fuzzy stuff in your lungs, but for hamburgers and diet soda. Yum!

And here goes Earthworm Jim 2! Much easier than EWJ1 if you ask me. Used to be my favourite out of the two. Can't remember how far I got when I was a kid, but it was at least Inflated Head. The story of the game is, after EWJ1 Princess What's-Her-Name got her sister Queen Slug-For-A-Butt's throne. What's-Her-Name got interested in Jim (and his large bank account), but Psy-Crow kidnapped the princess so that he can marry her and get the benefits of the marriage, like becoming the Monarch of the Galaxy! Ruler of the Universe! Master of All! Jim must follow Psy-Crow from planet to planet and save the princess before they reach the Lost Vegas system where Psy-Crow and the Princess can get a quick and non-consenting marriage. First stop is Bob the (Killer) Goldfish's summer home, Anything but Tangerines.

This actually is his second time through the piece, in the same sitting. The first read through was quicker but had a few problems. This time was cleaner, but, as he says, those triplets in places were still causing a little trouble. This tune from the "Earthworm Jim" Sega Genesis video game contains a couple quotes from Scott Joplin's "Maple Leaf Rag" though in the key of C (Maple Leaf was published in A-flat, and the song version in E-flat). The piano score he is reading is here: www.keeper1st.com I threw it together in a couple hours from an existing sloppy score that had the wrong time signature, some bass notes wrong and had the chords much too low in spots (the original arranger was deathly afraid of having to move his left hand more than an octave, it seems -- well, tough, dude; this is ragtime). I did some re-arranging and made it actually readable. The music was composed by Mark Miller.

Second level, 'Lorenzen's Soil'. On planet Burbank, Jim has been trapped underground by an earthquake, and another one is coming. Jim must make his way to the top before the second earthquake buries Jim completely, but Psy-Crow has also lead Lorenzo larvae and Pedro pupa to believe that there's a lost temple underground and that Jim has come to destroy it.
