Edinburgh Zoo is about to take delivery of two of the rarest animals on the planet - a pair of giant pandas on loan from the Chinese government. Sunshine and Sweetie - Yangguang and Tian Tian in Chinese - are both seven-years-old. They have grown up together in the misty mountains of southwest China. On Sunday they will embark on a 5000 mile journey to Scotland, where they will become star exhibits at the Edinburgh Zoo. The Royal Zoological Society of Scotland will pay more than £600000 a year for the loan of the pandas, plus another £70000 on imported bamboo. The pair eat 18000kg of the plant every year. Sunshine and Sweetie will fly to the UK on a specially fitted Fedex cargo plane, along with their "nanny" Xie Hao.

It's a special occasion as female pandas ovulate just once a year. The only pandas in the UK have now been brought together for the first time as the female has been judged ready to mate. [Darren McGary, Head of Animals at Edinburgh Zoo]: "I think the signs are very good, the female wasn't showing any aggression towards the male, she was standing for him, she was showing off her back end, so she was quite excited, she was lying down in position, he came in he wasn't aggressive towards her at all he has very gentle with her, he has been muzzling around her neck, in the right position, so everything was looking really good there certainly wasn't any negative signs there at all which is really positive for us." The zookeepers opened a so-called love tunnel between male Yang Guang and female Tian Tian's enclosures on Tuesday after tests showed she had ovulated. Female pandas ovulate just once a year, giving a window of 36 hours in which they can get pregnant. The panda conception process is complicated. Scotland's giant pandas, the first to live in the UK for 17 years, have met their adoring public for the first time. Tian Tian and Yang Guang, also known as Sweetie and Sunshine, went on show to the general public at Edinburgh Zoo on Friday morning and they did not disappoint their fans. Demand for tickets has been so high that numbers were limited, with 600 pre-booked visitors finally getting the chance to see them in their specially-built enclosures. Groups of 50 visitors at a time were allowed into the panda viewing areas for up to 30 minutes in order to keep the disturbance of the animals to a minimum. Tian Tian and Yang Guang seemed totally unaffected by all the fuss.

The Pandas at Edinburgh Zoo are enjoying their stay so far but in different ways. Yang Guang, the male, who is also known as Sunshine, has been exploring his enclosure and spending hours in full view of the zoo's keepers. Tian Tian (Sweetie) has been more reticent and remains out of sight much of the time . Television crews were allowed to film at the panda enclosures earlier. Paying visitors will be allowed in to see the giant pandas for the first time on Friday.

Went to see the Pandas at Edinburgh Zoo.... took my video camera with me! Was went to have captions but didn't upload to youtube, musn't have been in frame. Added them through annotations though! Basically Edinburgh has gone crazy for the arrival of the Pandas 'Sunshine' and 'Sweetie' from China. They got bagpiped off the plane. I think that says it all. So we went to see them, and to be fair, they are pretty great. Really big. They didn't do to much to be honest though, apparently they sleep for about 60% of the day. A life style i know many would enjoy... Couldn't resist adding some captions... and can't forget the other animals too. Lets take a look at their leafcutter ants. Visitors to Edinburgh Zoo are being treated to unusual displays of strength from a colony of 250000 leafcutter ants. The atta cephalotes ant is strong enough to bite through leather and carry 20 times its own body weight. They can be seen carrying their swag across a dangling rope connecting their food supply and nest tank. Senior animal presenter Gareth Bennett has looked after the colony since it arrived from the Caribbean 18 months ago. [Gareth Bennett, Senior Animal Presenter]: "It arrived in a very, very small yogurt pot with maybe one queen and a couple of hundred workers and foragers." The ants do not eat their fodder but use it to cultivate a fungus as their only source of food. [Gareth Bennett, Senior Animal Presenter]: "Only ten percent of captive colonies will get to the stage that we have on display here. The real trick is that at the early stages you must look after the fungus production, that's key to the whole thing. If you look after the fungus the ants tend to look after themselves."
