Toyota has set a new electric vehicle lap record at the Nürburgring Nordschleife. Driving a modified Radical, dubbed the EV P001, Jochen Krumbach completed the 20.8 km (12.9 mile) long course in 7 minutes and 47.794 seconds which buried the previous record of 9 minutes and 1.338 seconds that was set by the Peugeot EX1 concept. According to Rob Leupen, Toyota Motorsport's Director of Business Operations, "This is a very impressive achievement which really shows the huge potential for electric powertrains to deliver fast, exciting action on the race track. There's no doubt that electric motorsport can be every bit as thrilling as traditional racing and it was an amazing sensation to watch the TMG electric vehicle fly past on the Nordschleife, with only the sound of wind rushing past and tires squealing." As we have previously reported, the P001 features a 41.5 kWh lithium-ceramic battery which powers two electric motors that develop 381 PS (280 kW / 375 hp) and 800 Nm (590 Nm) of torque. This setup enables the 970 kg (2138 lb) car to accelerate from 0-100 km/h in 3.9 seconds and hit a top speed of 260 km/h (162 mph).

Nissan Motor Co., Ltd. has started production at its Oppama facility for the all-new 100% electric, zero-emission Nissan LEAF, which is slated to go on sale in December in Japan and the United States, and from early 2011, in select markets in Europe. In November, the company will begin exports to the United States, followed by shipments to Europe in December. Unlike the Leaf, the EV Focus is completely based on an existing car and platform so it looks and even drives like the gasoline power version of the car. Ford says the Focus Electric will go over 70 miles on a full charge and take 3 hours to fill up with electrons when plugged into a 240V Charging station. Since gasoline prices are up again, I thought I would make a film showing my 2008 Zap electric car and my old, 65 hot-rod Ford Futura convertible, with it's Hydrogen generator which gives the car a great boost in mileage and horsepower for just pennies.Mamma didn't raise me to throw away my money to big oil companies! The Zap cost me $4200.00 including tax and license and warrenty from a dealer who was going out of business. It was a demonstrator, with a few dings in it and 1,8000 miles on the odometer. I've put over 8000 miles on the little car, so far. The Falcon was purchased used in 1968 for $1200.00. It has over 500000 miles on it.

Sep 2006 Did General Motors deliberately sabotage the marketing of electric cars because they threatened the motor industry? That's the allegation made in a controversial new documentary. Ten years ago, GM unveiled the EV1 -- the first electric car for the mass market. "The EV1 was really special because it was cool and fast and fun to drive," states former GM marketer Chelsea Sexton. "These cars were so good, they would challenge the status quo of the oil industry." But despite their popularity among owners, GM quickly pulled the plug on its new product. It claims there was simply no mass market. "You could only go 100 miles before you had to recharge it so had to adapt your lifestyle to meet the needs of the vehicle," states spokesman Dave Barthmuss. But other workers believe GM never intended the EV1s to work and were more interested in promoting Hummers. "We got indications along the way that they weren't as sincere as they would have people believe," states Sexton. All the EV1s had been leased, instead of sold, to their owners. When the leases expired, GM refused to renew them and sent the cars to be crushed. But demand for electric cars keeps on growing.
