I got the idea from watching performances of David Bowie on the BBC (I think the sessions were from '72). I liked how he played live, slightly different versions of the songs. I figured it would be fun to do something similar, only in more interesting settings than just a stage. So we filmed and recorded the song at the same time, and any extra tracking (clapping, tambourine, accordion) was done the same way. So it's kinda like live multi-tracking. This particular session took over 13 hours. We filmed this about three days after I nearly broke my leg filming for another one of the videos, and I still couldn't put any weight on that foot. So whenever we had technical difficulties (which was often), I had to hobble around all the lamps to set things straight again. Add to that, we hadn't really practiced the song together before that day, and I, as always, had trouble remembering my lyrics. It was exhausting and frustrating, and I think I set the healing of my ankle back a good week or two, but we were happy with how it came out in the end.

(fakefourinc.com) . Here's what Ben has to say about the making: (from radicalface.com) "Electric President: The Violent Blue is now pressed, and the preorder stuff has all gone to manufacturers. Should have everything totally wrapped up in a couple weeks. I also shot a video with my long-time friend Mark Hubbard. We came up with the concept over coffee one night, and then figured out a budget the budget always being whatever money I can personally spare at the time. In this case, I had $150. For location, I really wanted to shoot everything on the beach at night. I love the beach at night, and since that was a launching point for a lot of this record, it seemed appropriate. But it's not real easy conditions to shoot a video. There was no natural light to speak of, and it was cold and windy and somewhat miserable. So most of our budget went to renting a generator to power lights, and to feeding everyone who volunteered to help. The costumes for the creatures ( we went a vague sort of sci-fi theme for this) were made out of wet suits, battery powered lights, duct tape and cut up sheets. I think it came out pretty good, considering all the things we had to work around. I'll post some production stills once the video is posted. It's funny to see how awful we all look when it's not totally <b>...</b>

directed by : ben cooper & mark hubbard www.radicalface.com artist: Electric President album : Sleep well morr music 2008 While Mark and I were coming up with all the visual ideas for these videos, we realized that most of them were short ideas. They might be interesting for 30 seconds or so, but not much beyond that. So instead of stretching the ideas out, we decided to leave them short and just string them all together, like Frankenstien music videos. This first one is the video that I nearly broke my ankle on. It happened during the bit with the swings. I don't know why, but jumping out swings at 3 am, while wearing masks that made it nearly impossible to see, didn't strike me as a stupid idea until the moment my ankle popped out from under me. If you notice on the last jump there, I come out of the swing wrong and I land with my leg at a bad angle. The ankle made an audible pop!, and it left me on crutches and canes for a couple weeks, and a limp for a few weeks after. I don't think I broke it, but I didn't go to the doctor, so I'm not really sure. It still hurts when I go down stairs. I'm kinda bummed out that the camera wasn't just a wink lower, though. I wanted to see what it looked like.

These were the easiest to shoot, but by far the hardest videos to finish. Because they had no real guide line to follow, Mark and I edited them about five times each, and we pretty much stopped simply because we were tired of looking at them. Being as open-ended as they were, we could have tinkered with them forever, and it was tough to say whether the tinkering was making them better, or just changing them. But I had a lot of fun building the sets for these. For example, that TV was something I found in the garbage, and my brother and I got some candles and melted them over it with a blow torch. Or that giant lamp, which originally was for the exterior of a house -- my brother rewired it and got it working again. It was comically large, so we couldn't resist sticking it in there somewhere. It was enjoyable digging through obscure props and random trash like that and finding ways to use them. And I didn't break my $200 budget, unless you count coffee and pizza, which I'm pretty proud of.

directed by : ben cooper & mark hubbard ben cooper gives you a brief introduction into his new album: "sleep well" Morr Music 2008 Most of this video was filmed in my backyard. I wanted to shoot everything for these videos at night, without any real background to the scenes, so Mark suggested we work outdoors with spot lighting. We could tell from the first test shoot that it was going to work, which was a relief. It meant we wouldn't have to scout around for locations too much, or deal with too many outside interferences (or police). I set aside a budget of $200 for the five videos. The bulk of that money went to the 17 desk lamps I bought. The rest went towards masks, objects to set on fire, candles, light bulbs, and other small props. Some of the other props were things I'd been saving, like the piano. That piano died on me a couple months back. I'd planned on setting it on fire, just to see what it would look like, but once we started talking about these videos, I figured we might as well film it. I'm glad we did. It looked really pretty, I thought. Particularly the smoke.

And since I know five of the managers at a local theater, we got to shoot this video in one. Like Monsters, it was filmed and recorded at the same time. But we only had a little over 5 hours to shoot and record everything, since we had to work after hours and be out before 6am. Luckily, we'd rehearsed this one a few times before the shoot, so there weren't nearly as many screw ups, and I was walking without a cane at this point. But even still, we only got to about half of the shots Mark and I had originally planned. I think it still worked out, but I'd have loved to see how some of the planned stuff would've looked on film. Oh well. But like the Monsters video, we had the "backing band" in masks. There wasn't any real reason for this. We just thought it looked funny.
