Peter Zinovieff and Electronic Music Studios

Peter Zinovieff's pioneering work into the fields of electronic music production and research led to many innovative electronic music instrument developments that were outstanding for the time. Peter was fascinated by electronic music and used his financial resources to develop a huge voltage-controlled studio that occupied an entire room in his home premises. There was a time when EMS (Electronic Music Studios) stood as equal to Moog and Arp. In many ways, EMS was more advanced with several pioneering ideas being investigated. Peter used two PDP8 minicomputers in the late 1960s to control the voltage-controlled analogue modules for research into electronic music exploration. Twenty years before affordable computing and sequencing packages, Zinovieff's computers could store and replay compositions, complete with sound shaping parameters even inventing a form of spectral or additive synthesis. Excerpts are edited from the television documentaries "What the Future Sounded Like" and "The New Sound of Music" featuring the first public performance of music by a computer in the Queen Elizabeth Hall in 1967. The spirit of EMS continues, and Peter's synthesizer innovations like the VCS3 and Synthi 100 have become outstanding analogue classics.

FL Studio - production - Andy Finn & Nick Sunchild - Spiky (Session One Mix)

Hi electronic music lovers out there. I want to give you a little view behind the scenes of our music productions. This project is very special in this case! We got a little discussion with some guys about music production and what programs suits. After talking about the usual progs like, Cubase, Logic, Ableton those guys really said... FL Studio won´t fit in this case of professional music production software..... Have to say we also use other progs the main time because of several reasons but not because of the widely spread myth "FL Studio got a bad audio quality"...! Because I´ma "FL Studio lover" of the early days (I would never had started making music without FL), and this "MYTH" I want to prove the power of this program to those who got no idea what they are talking about and also to check our producing skills! So we decided to produce this whole track in FL Studio ONLY this time! If you know how... there is no problem of creating professional music with FL. Wish you much fun with "Spiky (Session One Mix)" Andy Finn & Nick Sunchild

Ableton Live Tips #10 Pt. 2: Drum Programming Techniques (Matt Shadetek)

For more info, visit Dubspot blog - bit.ly In part two of this Ableton Live tutorial series on creative composition and production techniques, Professor Nalepa shares some great tips for drum programming and sequencing he picked up from fellow Dubspot Instructor, producer Matt Shadetek. It is a simple and efficient technique you can apply using any software or drum machine to get your ideas down fast when you're inspired. This method involves creating a linear 2, 4 or 8 bar drum pattern, duplicate it, and add some variations - the key is making sure something interesting is happening every 4 or 8 bar. This is a fundamental lesson in drum programing for all electronic music genres; add variations from bar to bar, even if they're slight and subtle changes; avoid sounding loopy.

Logic Pro Tutorial: Using Side Chain Compression - Tips & Tricks

More info - bit.ly In this tutorial, Dubspot Electronic Music Production and Sound Design Instructor Evan Sutton will demonstrate two techniques for sidechain compression in Logic Pro in the context of dance pop production. These techniques can be used in a number of different musical contexts, and can be even more handy when made part of a Logic template. The first technique will involve simple ducking of a bass in order to make room for a kick drum. When mixing, subtractive equalization is very important to make sure that there is room for all of the sounds, and that they're not clashing. With this technique, we can have sounds share a particular frequency range, while also creating some interesting rhythmic effects. The second technique uses an instance of Ultrabeat with the sequencer turned on, to create a ghost sidechain. In some cases, you may want to create a rhythmic ducking effect, even though there is no other instrument useful as a sidechain. That's where this trick comes in, and it's simple to build into templates. Ultrabeat's unique features make this one possible. Simple automation can create a transition between rhythmic ducking, and no ducking, so as to create a dynamic, evolving sound. These two compression techniques are grounded in principles that are portable to all DAWs and compressors, but Logic's unique interface, and features like Ultrabeat's sequencer make it perfect for use with alternate and unique routings.

For more info, please visit Dubspot Blog - bit.ly In the latest edition of Ableton Live Production Tips with Steve Nalepa, Professor Nalepa shares mixing techniques using one of his current works in progress as the example.
