Empirical Labs EL8 Distressor 1 Channel Compressor The Distressor is an automatic gain (or volume) control device (AGC in engineering terms) designed for pro audio (music) applications. Basically, it electronically controls the volume of just about any source in a very pleasing, and "musical" manner - adding fullness, intelligibility, and especially in the Distressor's case - excitement. This type of device is often called a "limiter" or "compressor" by audio industry people. Its most probable uses will be in recording studios, live sound situations, movie sound production, and radio broadcast production.

I recently added the Empirical Labs Mike-E channel strip to my studio and wanted to share a quick demo. I used a Bluebird condenser mic on both acoustic guitar and on the drums. 80Hz hi-pass filter was engaged for the acoustic guitar but not the drums. Gain was set to 40db on the acoustic guitar and 10db on the drums. HF Emphasis was engaged at all times. This circuit helps the high frequencies saturate a little earlier than usual. One of the great things about the Mike-E is the "mix" knob. Without the CompSat section engaged, the preamp is VERY clean. In the examples here, I have tried to give an idea of what kind of sounds you can get by blending the saturation, compression and clean sounds with a few different ratios, and attack/release settings. I couldn't be happier with the Mike-E. It's made in the USA, built like a tank, and has very high quality components (Lundahl input transformer and Germanium semiconductors in the saturation circuit). I hope this video helps Empirical Labs sell a few more units!
