This step-by-step guide will help you truss and stuff a turkey to roast for your holiday meal. Preparing a Turkey To prepare a turkey for roasting, first remove the bag of giblets and the neck from the turkey. Rinse the turkey with cold water, and pat dry with paper towels. Lift the wing tips up and over the back of the turkey, and tuck under the bird. Loosen the skin from the turkey breast without totally detaching the skin. Rub butter (or a mixture of butter, salt, and pepper) evenly over the turkey breast. Some turkey recipes call for placing herbs under the skin of the turkey before it bakes. To do this, carefully place the herb leaves evenly under the skin on each side of the breast, and replace the skin. When you are not stuffing the turkey, place pear or apple halves, onion halves, and garlic (or other ingredients specified in the recipe) into the cavity of the turkey. If you are stuffing the turkey, spoon the stuffing mixture into the cavity. Don't pack it too tightly because it needs room to expand during roasting. For food safety reasons, it's really better to bake the stuffing in a separate pan rather than inside the turkey because the stuffing mixture may prevent the inside of the turkey from reaching the safe temperature. If there is a flap of fat attached to the body cavity, trim it off, or fold it up into the cavity. The Solina String-Ensemble came out 1973 and was the first "stand alone" electronic string ensemble - the original "string machine". It is a portable, cutdown version of the string ensemble, which is a part of the Eminent 310U organ. It sounds different to the Eminent 310U, although quite similar. It uses "divide-down" organ technology, is full polyphonic and has a very characterful sound. The Solina was a great success in the seventies and was used by many artists on many recordings. The String-Ensemble was developed and produced by Eminent in Holland. ARP bought the rights to sell it under their name. Outside the USA the "ARP STRING-ENSEMBLE" is known as "SOLINA STRING-ENSEMBLE". For the US market, ARP just put ARP-stickers on it... Many manufacturers tried to copy it (Logan String Melody, Elka Rhapsody, Crumar Multiman, Farfisa String Orchestra, Jen String Machine, Siel Orchestra, just to name a few). Indeed, every organ manufacturer had one to offer... but the Solina remains the best (or at least one of the best) with its fat, unique and charming sound. The fourth and final movement of 28 year-old Ravel's Quatuor à Cordes. He is said to have been meticulous in his writing, and, finally, a group of musicians have matched his efforts in terms of attention. This is, in my opinion, the best performance and recording of this piece. Exploding with a firey tremolo motif comes vif et agité, the necessary rush after the calm that was the previous movement. It allows the theme from the first movement to be returned, but unlike très lent, which sleepily repeats it, vif et agité presents a variation giving it a sense of rebirth; a nice contrast to the fire of the trems and pizzicato chords. Befittingly, the quartet ends as it started: in F. Though Fauré said this movement was a failure due to its bad structure, I have to disagree. Vif et agité is strikingly successful as a finale, allows us to revisit ideas presented, and sends us off in a flurry of exhilaration. Besides, structure shouldn't take precedence over style. This video includes over 2 minutes of applause. Why? Because they're that good. Composed between March 1907 and August 1908, its last movement marks the decisive point at which Western art music moved from a tonally based harmonic structure to what has been called an atonal harmonic structure. Vif et agité Emerson String Quartet The similarities between Maurice Ravel's only work for string quartet, the String Quartet in F major, and Claude Debussy's only work for string quartet, the String Quartet in G minor, Op. 10, can hardly be avoided or ignored. During the early years of his career, Ravel was frequently and sometimes vehemently criticized for having copied Debussy, and it was only later that musical society began to realize that, in the realm of piano music at least, it was equally possible that Debussy had imitated his younger colleague. With the String Quartet in F, composed in 1902 and 1903 and then revised up to 1910, however, Ravel seems more certain to have relied on Debussy's 1893 Op. 10; as emotionally, psychologically, and even structurally different as the two works are, one could never accuse them of having a language barrier. But, whereas Debussy's quartet is the work of a headstrong progressive still on his way to developing a mature, personal style, Ravel's is the work of an already mature artist more concerned with craftsmanship and traditional structure than with innovation. Tomato gardening secrets: building a simple support system to keep the tomatoes off the ground. You can find other tomato gardening tips at www.beginner-gardening.com (scroll to the bottom for all the tomato growing articles). This system of trellis building requires 3 bamboo poles or something similar. A length of strong string (I use old binder twine) about 3-feet long. Put the poles together rather loosely with the thin ends (bamboo has a thinner end and a thick end) together. This will be the top. Wind a semi-tight loop of string around the poles to bind them together. The strength in this comes from wrapping the string around itself between the poles and pulling this as tightly as possible. I tend to cross from one space to the other and back again in a criss-cross pattern. When you run out of string, then tie some knots so it won't unravel. Place the poles in a tripod position and if you have the string tight enough, this tomato support will hold at least 3 plants (one per pole) I use these to support a cross pole (made from 2 bamboo poles) so I can tie tomatoes to the overhead pole and use the uprights for climbing beans. You see, tomato growing secrets start with how you support the plant in order to get as much sunlight to the leaves as possible- and keep the fruit off the ground so the slugs can't damage them. Get two colors of embroidery floss or craft thread, and cut four pieces. Two of each color 24 inches each. 2. Tie an overhead knot about two inches from the top and attach it to your clip board, you can also use masking tape if you don't have a clipboard. 3. Take your first string and make a four with it across your second string. Then lift your second string a little and bring the first string under the second one and pull it up to the top, do this twice. 4. Then you move the second string over and go on to the third one and then the fourth. When you get to the end put the first string, or the one that you have been making knots with and put it over your third string so that it should be the last string then. 5. Keep going until you get to the end, or until it is as long as you want it. Then tie another knot at the end and tie them together.
