Part 1: Writer, screenwriter, and director Nora Ephron has been nominated three times for an Academy Award for Original Screenplay, and has not only written but produced and directed the romantic comedies, Sleepless in Seattle, You've Got Mail, and Julie and Julia. She is also an essayist, and her most recent collection is entitled: I Remember Nothing and Other Reflections. In this, the first of a two-part interview, Ephron discusses her life and her published work. The daughter of two Hollywood screenwriters, she recounts how she learned the art of telling funny stories at the family dinner table. She also discusses her mother's descent into alcoholism, an event that began when Ephron was fifteen. She traces her work as a journalist and essayist, a career that included stints at Newsweek, the New York Post, and Esquire. Finally, Ephron discusses Heartburn, her comic roman à clef, in which she rendered hilarious her very unfunny predicament of being pregnant and cheated on by her husband, and I Remember Nothing and Other Reflections (2010) which showcases her frank but always funny musings about aging and the vagaries of memory. This was probably the first time I actually worked on a project to fight the climate crisis. After leaving The Nature Company in 1986 I moved into a flat in Kensington with Larry Ephron, one of a handful of people I knew in the San Francisco Bay Area who were proponents of what was called the Hamaker Theory. John D. Hamaker, a mechanical engineer and agronomist, and Donald Weaver, who I knew in the Bay Area had published the only book on the theory, The Survival of Civilization. en.wikipedia.org In short, the theory is that during interglacial periods, over thousands of years, the earth's soils get depleted of minerals, the plants become less robust and weaker at absorbing carbon dioxide and so carbon dioxide builds up in the atmosphere. It causes more water in the equatorial belt to evaporate and move to the poles where it accumulates as snow. This snow causes the ice caps to advance and a new 100000 year glacial period begins. During that glacial period, all of that mile-thick glacial ice grinds more rock into dust, so that when the glaciers retreat and the plants recolonize, they have wonderful new soil and can suck down the CO2. Larry had just begun researching a book and video project to popularize the messages of the Hamaker/Weaver book. He hired me to help him with both. Afterwards I talked with him and asked if I could upload the vid and his info. His style had a little Latin tinge that reminded me of Ruben Gonzalez coupled with Duke Ellington. When I talked to him he said that his wife is Cuban, so that's where that part of his influence comes from. He also said that he used to play with Hendrix and was involved in the Avant Garde Jazz scene. Google it. I told him that I quite my job and moved out here last week to work on an album, but no longer consider myself a guitarist, but a songwriter. I can't compete with these young kids nowadays! He said Hendrix never thought he was a singer but that's how it all came out. Sweet.
