The St. Matthew Passion (German: Matthäuspassion) (also, Matthæus Passion), BWV 244, is a musical composition written by Johann Sebastian Bach for solo voices, double choir and double orchestra, with libretto by Picander (Christian Friedrich Henrici). It sets chapters 26 and 27 of the Gospel of Matthew to music, with interspersed chorales and arias. Yo-Yo Ma was born in Paris to Chinese parents and had a musical upbringing. His mother, Marina Lu, was a singer, and his father, Hiao-Tsiun Ma, was a conductor and composer. His family moved to New York when he was seven years old. At a very young age, Ma began studying violin, and later viola, before taking up the cello in 1960 at age four. The child prodigy began performing before audiences at age five, and performed for President John F. Kennedy when he was seven. At eight years old, he appeared on American television in a concert conducted by Leonard Bernstein. By fifteen years of age, Ma had graduated from Trinity School in New York and appeared as a soloist with the Harvard Radcliffe Orchestra in a performance of the Tchaikovsky: Rococo Variations. Ma studied at the Juilliard School of Music with Leonard Rose, and attended Columbia University, before enrolling at Harvard University, but began questioning whether he should continue his studies until, in the 1970s, Pablo Casals's performances inspired him. Hilde Rössel-Majdan sings "Erbarme Dich" from Matthäus-Passion by Johann Sebastian Bach Willy Boskovsky, solo-violin Wiener Philharmoniker Mogens Woeldike, conductor Born: January 21, 1921 - Moosbierbaum, Austria Died: December 15, 2010 - Vienna, Austria The Austrian contralto, Hilde (Hildegard) Rössel-Majdan (sometimes spelled Rössl-Majdan), was the daughter-in-law and student of the bass Karl Rössel-Majdan. She was educated at the Vienna Academy of Music. Hilde Rössel-Majdan began her career as a concert alto in 1946. In 1947 she substituted for the soloist who was sick in a performance of JS Bach's Matthäus-Passion (BWV 244) in Vienna under Wilhelm Furtwängler and had a brilliant success. In 1950 she heeded a call to the Vienna State Opera, of which she remained a member for over 20 years. Guest appearences in La Scala, Covent Garden, and in many other great theaters took a very successful course. With the same success she sang at the Festivals of Salzburg, Edinburgh, and Aix-en-Provence. In Salzburg she appeared in 1954-1955 as Dryad in Ariadne auf Naxos and in 1958 as Lukrezia in Pfitzner's Palestrina, in 1960 as Annina in Strauss' Rosenkavalier, and Marcellina in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro, and additionally in numerous concerts. As oratorio and Lieder singer she had a most successful career in the music centers of Germany, Austria, and Italy.
