The Erhu

Perhaps no musical instrument is more evocative of China than the erhu (二胡), but its origins are in central Asia: The erhu is one of several instruments historically known as "huqin" (barbarian's fiddle). In this video, Liu Hong (刘虹) introduces the erhu and plays the classic folk tune "Running River" (江河水). See www.danwei.com for more.

Traditional Chinese Music, Picking Flowers(采花):Erhu(二胡):Lei Qiang

This song, Picking Flowers, is from the CD - Chinese Traditional Erhu Music Vol. 2. I recommend this CD to anyone interested in traditional Erhu. The Erhu player is the very well known and highly regarded Lei Qiang. For those people not familiar with the Erhu, this CD is a great introduction to the Chinese musical instrument. It is one of the most, if not the most, expressive of musical instruments. Often sounding "willowy" and/or mystical, it is often referred to as the Chinese violin. It is a two stringed bow instrument with sound qualities similar to the cello. The Erhu is the heart of Traditional Chinese music. I do not own the content of this video.

Giac mo trua (A noon dream) (Vietnamese erhu: dan nhi)

This is a beautiful song by Vietnamese erhu. Its lyric is very metaphorical, but, yeah so beautiful ^^. I really love it and I'm sure you guys will love it too. You can listen to the version with voice here: youtube.com youtube.com Vietnamese erhu has a distinctive style that is different from chinese erhu. can you feel it? (this is a video performance of "dan nhi" www.youtube.com youtube.com ) (This is another Vietnam erhu, which is very weird: youtube.com ) By the way, the dresses in this video are called "ao dai". "ao dai" is vietnamese traditional dress. It's the uniform for many high schools too. Lyric: I was lying down, remembering a pure day, a tilted season the blurred, distant wheat filed the bird wings bending at the end of the sky I came back to that place A green shoulder A green stream of hair Is that the horizon or a shower at the end of the sky And the wind follows me, drifting on that path And the sunlight follows me on that deserted river The season has passed through the deep green regions That person has forgotten the times that I felt sad From every footstep on that road that I once passed has blossomed flowers, deserted flowers That person has gone through my words Hey, that noon dream when will I return? The sound of a temple's bell

Erhu Overview with David Brown HD (CHI056)

larkinthemorning.com The Huqin is a family of Chinese bowed instruments that became popular during the Sung dynasty, circa 960-1279 AD. Bowed instruments were likely invented in Central Asia and Mongolia, and the name huqin means foreign instrument. The various sizes have a long neck, 2 strings tuned in 5ths, and a snakeskin resonator. The bow is placed between the pair of strings and rosined on both sides of the hair. They are played with a wide variety of virtuosic techniques, and have a tone that is both mellow and sweet and bright as the same time. The most important instrument in the huqin group is the Erhu, which is widely played in many genres of Chinese music and is often used as a solo instrument, having a large repertoire. Our Erhus are of fine quality, and all have geared tuners that look like the original wooden pegs, come with bow and case, and sound excellent. Erhu are most commonly tuned DA like the middle strings of a violin. Student model.

Erhu Solo 空山鳥語Birds in the Isolated Forest Mountains

A solo I learned recently. It's not the best video of course. A few minor errors. The song is called Birds in the Forest. It's a traditional erhu solo composed in the 1930's by Liu Tian Hua. The song is also based off a Tang Dynasty poem about entering these isolated forest and how bird songs filled the atmosphere. There are certain techniques that create certain tones to imitate these bird calls. Provide some feedback please. Haha. Thanks.
