Two escalators go up, but for some reason nearly everyone takes the same one, leaving the second one empty. I'm sure there's an "official" psychological term for this crowding, but I just call it the "escalator phenomenon." This video was taken on the second day of the 2012 Midwinter Meeting, but I've been seeing the same thing happen since the event started. Video by Simon A. Thalmann.

www.youtube.com Send your fails to crypticAFV@hotmail.com Please READ: An escalator is a moving staircase, a conveyor transport device for carrying people between floors of a building. The device consists of a motor-driven chain of individual, linked steps that move up or down on tracks, allowing the step treads to remain horizontal. Escalators are used around the world to move pedestrian traffic in places where elevators would be impractical. Principal areas of usage include department stores, shopping malls, airports, transit systems, convention centers, hotels, and public buildings. The benefits of escalators are many. They have the capacity to move large numbers of people, and they can be placed in the same physical space as one might install a staircase. They have no waiting interval (except during very heavy traffic), they can be used to guide people toward main exits or special exhibits, and they may be weatherproofed for outdoor use. In 2004, it was estimated that the United States had 30000 escalators, and that people used escalators 90 billion times each year.

How is Washington, DC supposed to run the world when it can't even fix its own escalators? Strap on some steel-toed safety shoes—you're gonna need them—as Reason.tv correspondent Kennedy investigates DC's dismal and dangerous subway system. Metro, the sprawling 106-mile rapid transit system that serves 3.4 million DC-area residents, is notorious for a lot of things, but nothing so much as the squeaky disrepair of its 588 escalators. On any given day, about one out of eight moving stairs are out of service. Yet Metro's escalator and elevator maintenance division has a $22.5 million operating budget and 214 staffers, which works out to about one employee for every four escalators and elevators systemwide. The grim history of Metro escalators runs like an endlessly circulating chain of horror stories. In 2002, an escalator at Brookland Station set a record by breaking down 147 times over the course of one year. Poorly maintained escalators have led to broken arms, lost digits, massive pileups, and multiple deaths. In 1991, for example, a 25-year-old student from California lost the top of his right foot on an escalator because a drugged-up schizophrenic station manager at Dupont Station refused to walk 10 feet to hit the emergency shut-off switch, though he did give vague instructions to a noncompliant homeless man to do it for him. The same year, a 15-year-old Michigan girl saw her pinkie toe snipped by an escalator at Smithsonian Station. When heading home from the 2010 ...

First thing...the dude didn't get hurt at all. Second off...everyone knows that you MUST FEAR AND RESPECT THE ESCALATOR! And third off wow...people keep copying this thing. And some ad agency in Norway wanted to make an offer to buy the video.

Architects will be able to create escalators in any shape they want, even freeform curves, thanks to the first significant rethink of escalator design since the 'moving stairway' was invented in 1897. A system known as the 'Levytator' has been developed by Jack Levy, an Emeritus Professor of Mechanical Engineering at City Univ. London. Unlike traditional designs, where redundant steps move underneath those in use, the Levytator utilizes a continuous loop of curved modules, which can follow any path upwards, flatten and straighten out, and descend once more, all with passengers onboard. These escalators, connecting street level to the underground station platorm, are located at the Wheaton Washington Metro Station, on the Red Line, in Wheaton, Maryland. They are the longest escalators in the Western Hemisphere. This station opened in September 1990, and was the eastern terminus of the Red Line, until the Glenmont station opened in July 1998. Medellin, Colombia (NTN24) - Residents of Comuna 13 in Medellin got a ride into the future Monday with the installation of outdoor escalators. Before, residents would have to climb hundreds of stairs to get to their homes in this tough hillside neighborhood. Now, they can step on and ride up or down the mountain on the electric stairs. The city says the escalators are composed of six sections and will benefit 12 thousand users.

It runs from the Central district up to the residential areas up the hill, known as the Mid-levels. It was quite a hot day and man, how tiring it was. Part 2 will be up shortly, so keep your eyes peeled.
