ENSONIQ ESQ-1
The ESQ-1 is Ensoniq's first synthesizer made in 1986. It sports 8 note polyphony, an 8 track sequencer and my favorite an Analog Filter. In this video I'll try to show the capabilites of the sequencer along with the creative limitations of 8 note polyphony. The notes seem to drop right when you want them to. After Craig Padilla & Skip Murphy had viewed a few "Mr. Hands on synths" videos on YouTube, they decided to elaborate on that concept. They invited their friend and cameraman, Bart Hawkins, to help create a video showcasing a live performance on their numerous vintage analog and digital synths. Padilla and Murphy had not performed together with most of their synthesizers for a few years, and they were still plugging in their instruments when Hawkins arrived! This video is the end result, and is a lot of fun to view and hear! It's available on their CD release "ANALOG DESTINATION" which is due for release in 2008 on the GROOVE label from the Netherlands! ESQ-1 Digital / Analog Synthesizer (Episode 2 Deleted Scene)
This is a deleted scene for Inside Synthesis / Episode 2. www.insidesynthesis.com has the full video. It demonstrates the use of LFOs triggering sounds on and off, emulating arpeggiators and sequences. It's useful for any synthesizer that lacks real-time phrase triggering, such as the ESQ-1. I didn't use it since the timing was off. If you play too many notes on an ESQ-1, the LFOs slow down. But it works well for at least 4 notes.

The Ensoniq ESQ-1 is a hybrid synthesizer from 1986. It has 32 digital waveforms and analog lowpass filter. It is flexible, since it employs 3 oscillators, 4 envelopes and 3 LFO's per voice. It is 8 voice polyphonic. Also it has a built in pattern sequencer. It is a kind of "poorman's PPG".
