Etude No. 3 from Etudes, Op. 10 Maurizio Pollini, piano Etude Op. 10 No. 3, in E major, is a solo piano work composed by Frédéric Chopin. This is a slow cantabile study, in which the right hand must maintain a singing tone in the melody whilst contributing to the accompaniment. This étude differs from most of Chopin's in its tempo. It marks a significant departure from the technical virtuosity required in études before Chopin's time. It concentrates on melodious phrasing and legato ambience of performance more than technical skill. It has been classified as a Tone Poem for piano by some critics, and is highly regarded as a quality manifestation of Chopin's love for Romantic Opera and Poland, where he was born. During a lesson with his pupil Adolf Gutmann, Chopin began weeping and cried, "Oh, my homeland!". Chopin was said to have also noted this piece as the most intimate piece he has ever composed, stating that "In all my life I have never again been able to find such a beautiful melody." Etude Op. 14 "Sur mer" (On the sea) (1890) Felix Blumenfeld (1863-1931) was a highly respected Russian conductor, piano virtuoso, and modest composer of a decidedly Romantic inclination. He studied composition with Rimsky-Korsakov at St. Petersburg, teaching piano there until the turmoil of the October Revolution forced him to leave the city in 1918. He stayed briefly in Kiev and then moved to Moscow where he taught piano until his death. Blumenfeld is barely mentioned except in relation to Vladimir Horowitz, who was his greatest pupil. However, Blumenfeld was also an important conductor, bringing about first Russian performances of Wagners Tristan and even Scriabins Poem of Ecstasy. Except for the more famous Etude for the left hand Op. 36, Blumenfelds piano compositions are never played. In his early period, he began as a disciple of The Five and assimilated Chopin and Liszt. But in the early 20th-century, he continued to evolve and branched off into his own virtuosic and lyrical style, one that is best comparable to Rachmaninov and early Scriabin.
