Rolling Through the Bay with Scott Weaver: Maker Faire

Scott Weaver has spent the last 35 years painstakingly constructing a replica of the city of San Francisco made of toothpicks! Not only that, but it is also a marble run, allowing ping-pong balls to take various tours through the city. His artwork will be on display in the Tinkering Studio at the Exploratorium until June 19th. Synesthesia: The Smell of a Sound, The Taste of a Color

Bryan Alvarez is a doctoral candidate at the University of California, Berkeley, researching brain-based and cognitive mechanisms of a unique form of sensory-blending called synesthesia. Synesthesia is an involuntary joining in which the real information of one sense is accompanied by a perception in another sense. Bryan discusses types of synesthesia and what might be happening in the brain.

DIY Spirograph - Exploratorium

1) Find a turntable. 2) Put a Glow-in-the-Dark Screen (phosphorescent screen) on the rotating platform. 3) Use an egg-beater (hand mixer) with a small LED light to draw on the screen. 4) Turn the lights off. 5) Turn the record player on to get the Glow-in-the-Dark screen to rotate. 6) Rotate the eggbeater and watch the patterns the LED light draws on the Glow-in-the-Dark screen. 7) Try turning the egg-beater counter-clockwise, does the pattern change? What's going on Phosphorescent material stores light energy for a short period of time. So when you shine the LED light on the phosphorescent screen, it will glow for a while. The patterns are called cycloids. The flashlight draws a small circle, while the record player also rotates. The combination of those two movements results in a spirograph effect.

Exploratorium for Monks (Part 1).mov

Exploratorium for Monks (2010) Edited by Whitaker Martin In 2000, His Holinesses the Dalai Lama launched an initiative to implement science education as part of the monastic curriculum. For the last decade, Tibetan Buddhist monks and nuns, exiled in India, have become growingly engaged in western science. This documentary, filmed on location in India, shares the experiences of six Exploratorium educators and a unique group of 30 Tibetan Buddhist monks. This pioneering group of Buddhist scholars are now training to share science with their fellow monastics. As science leaders they will help implement new learning opportunities that support the growing dialogue between Tibetan Buddhism and science. The inquiry rich activities from the Exploratorium provide valuable teaching tools for engaging the monastics in science. The deep curiosity and joyful approach to inquiry of the monks is a rich context for exploring the intersection of Buddhism and science This film was recorded during meetings of the Sager Science Leadership Institute that took place between January 2009 and May 2010.

Exploratorium Founder, 1972

Frank Oppenheimer, founder of the Exploratorium, tells of the history and thought that went into the creation of the Exploratorium. Produced by Thorne Films in early 1972. Dr. Frank Oppenheimer, opened the doors of the museum in 1969 without fanfare with only a handful of exhibits and a $50000 grant from the San Francisco Foundation. We're now celebrating 40 years, during which the museum has grown enormously, adding groundbreaking exhibits, events, web pages, publications, education programs, and much more. www.exploratorium.edu

Gyroid at the Exploratorium in San Francisco, CA USA

The Gyroid was made by the Exploratorium's Paul Stepahin, and exhibit developer Eric Dimond from a shape defined by a NASA scientist looking for structurally sound forms. Thomas Rockwell, an ex-playground designer who helped to mastermind the concept of the exhibit. "Two people can enter it next to each other, climb through it, and emerge on the other side without every having been in the same space."

Exploratorium at the Piers: The Observatory Takes Shape

Framing of the Exploratorium's Observatory Building, the only completely new construction at at the piers, began in April 2011. Iron workers placed various sizes of steel beams in piles around the concrete base of the Observatory. Then, while a crane raised and held each beam aloft, the workers used metal spikes to line up the holes of the beams and inserted bolts, tightening them down to tie the structure together. Because the Observatory Building is less than two stories tall, the iron workers were allowed to shimmy across the beams without harnesses. Once this process was finished, the beams were plumbed and welded together.
