Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto has created a beautiful, undeniably scary time-lapse map of the 2053 nuclear explosions which have taken place between 1945 and 1998, beginning with the Manhattan Project's "Trinity" test near Los Alamos and concluding with Pakistan's nuclear tests in May of 1998. This leaves out North Korea's two alleged nuclear tests in this past decade (the legitimacy of both of which is not 100% clear). Each nation gets a blip and a flashing dot on the map whenever they detonate a nuclear weapon, with a running tally kept on the top and bottom bars of the screen. Hashimoto, who began the project in 2003, says that he created it with the goal of showing"the fear and folly of nuclear weapons." It starts really slow — if you want to see real action, skip ahead to 1962 or so — but the buildup becomes overwhelming. www.ctbto.org Multimedia artwork "2053" - This is the number of nuclear explosions conducted in various parts of the globe.* Profile of the artist: Isao HASHIMOTO Born in Kumamoto prefecture, Japan in 1959. Worked for 17 years in financial industry as a foreign exchange dealer. Studied at Department of Arts, Policy and Management of Musashino Art University, Tokyo. Currently working for Lalique Museum, Hakone, Japan as a curator. Jem Stansfield visits the Defence Academy of the UK in order to make the dangerous high explosive nitroglycerine. Filmed in extreme slo-mo for the first time ever for 'Explosions: How we Shook the World', just a hit with a hammer is enough to cause this sensitive high explosive to detonate - creating a supersonic shockwave and a flash of light that is almost too fast to film, even with the latest specialist cameras.

A comparison of the fuel-air flame speeds in butane/air and hydrogen air mixtures. The mixtures in each case are near stoichiometry. Hydocarbons-air mixtures are typically what cars run on, just with octane-air rather than butane air. You can run rockets on liquid hydrocarbons/liquid oxygen, indeed the heavy lift section of the saturn V rocket ran on liquids oxygen (LOX) and kerosene (a moderately long chain hydrocarbon). While per unit volume of gasious combustion this actually produces more energy than the hydrogen-air mixture, the nature of that energy (spread over more molecules, with a lower temperature) means that its not a good a propellant as hydrogen-air. Hydrogen-air mixture have ferocious combustion speeds, over a vast composition range. As the energy of the reaction goes almost exclusively into the water molecules produces (which are very steam), it makes an excellent rocket propellant. Naturally most of the gas in these bottles is the nitrogen that makes up 4/5 of our atmosphere. If it were simply a H2/O2 mixture the explosion would be about 2-3x as big. Rockets run on liquidized fuel. As a rule of thumb, there is about a 1000 fold increase in density on liquefaction. This is the mixture the shuttle uses, and it uses some 4000 liters of it per second! That's the equivalent of burning some 4 million of these bottles per second! Shuttle Launch courtesy of Nasa. Here, a few "bitter clingers" are defending the 2nd Amendment by exercising their 1st Amendment right to promote the fun of guns, demonstrate some of the different weapons available and also encourage safety. Tommy Shane Steiner and his brother Sid Steiner, two friends of Alex from high school, join gunsmith and weapons expert Matt Williams to take aim and practice their marksmanship in this explosive and exciting pilot episode for "Brothers in Arms"-- a new mini-series coming to PrisonPlanet.tv, where other special feature programs will also come in the future. It was taken from my balcony on the 34th floor of a building in Fort Worth. Though I thought we were at war or was terrorism, it was a massive series of downed 12470 volt power lines. As I took it with my 70-200 2.8L IS lens, it is farther away than it looks. (it is 5 miles away) That is why there are not explosion sounds. This was a very well documented event. I was on my balcony to take lightning pictures (Yes, not smart) and this started happening in front of me. I turned my camera (Canon 5d MkII) to video mode and let it roll. I did just realize this evening that the video is doubled. (others pointed it out in their comments) One video is duplicated. It happened when I was reducing the file size. I would up with the video duplicated. I would like to fix it ...

At 7:17 AM on the morning of June 30, 1908, a mysterious explosion occurred in the skies over Siberia. It was caused by the impact and breakup of a large meteorite, at an altitude roughly six kilometers in the atmosphere. Realistic pictures of the event are unavailable. However, Russian scientists collected eyewitness accounts of the event. I believe that we now know enough about large impacts to "decode" the subjective descriptions of the witnesses and create realistic views of this historic asteroid impact as seen from different distances.

sheilaaliens.net McAdam/New Brunswick, Canada - (I've not yet found any video or audio recording of this happening, meow.) Canada's EQ Center: www.earthquakescanada.nrcan.gc.ca "A series of earthquakes has jolted a small corner of NB. They haven't caused any major damage, but they have left many residents rattled." "Residents in a small southwestern New Brunswick community may continue to feel minor earthquakes for several more days or even weeks, according to a Natural Resources Canada seismologist. McAdam has been hit with five small earthquakes since Saturday in what is known as an "earthquake swarm." The last one was felt at 7:30 pm Tuesday. "Certainly we are seeing what we are calling an earthquake swarm," said John Adams, a seismologist with Natural Resources Canada. "It is a number of earthquakes all of similar and small size all happening in the McAdam area." The first earthquake happened at 1:40 am on March 10, which had a magnitude of 2.4. Three minutes later, an aftershock with a magnitude of 1.4 was recorded. Two more earthquakes were recorded on Tuesday within roughly 20 minutes of each other. The small quakes had magnitudes of 2.0 and 1.9 respectively. A third quake was felt at 7:30 pm Adams said these small earthquakes could happen for several more days or even weeks. "We are absolutely certain that they are earthquakes that are underground. They are unpredictable. Of course you don't know when the next one is going to happen," he said. 13 crazy experiments-explosions you shouldn't do at home. Starting with the propane-C3H8 filled balloon explosions. Slow motion reveals that initially there is blue flame which takes quickly yellow color. Secondly, acetylene-C2H2 (prepared by adding calcium carbide to water) flame is black due to unburned carbon particles. Nitrocellulose-C6H7O2(ONO2)3 burning is fast, but small pieces can be safely ignited on palm due to low density of nitrated cotton. Trimethylborate-B(OCH3)3 exploded with green flame. Rubidium-Rb and potassium-K reacted explosively with water. Then came methanol-CH3OH cannon. Aluminium-Al and lead tetroxide-Pb3O4 or simply aluminothermic mixture was ignited with a chemical time fuse. Bomb group was neutralizing solvents that may have had some unstable peroxides formed. They used plastic explosive (contains hexogen-C3H6N6O6, also known as RDX) and a detonating cord. The second explosion was picric acid-C6H3N3O7 and some plastic explosive. The last was a mixture of potassium permanganate-KMnO4 and aluminium-Al.
