Sutte Hakkun すってはっくん 5-10

I thought I'd upload this for fun, since this is the nastiest stage in the first half of the game. Appropriate, then, that it comes at the end of the first half of the game. :) This is tool-assisted for your viewing pleasure (a non-tool-assisted version basically would add another minute at the beginning of retrying to grab and place the blocks over and over again, so I figure this is more entertaining).

Here's a clip of the Japanese version of Animal Crossing: Wild World (known as Oideyo Doubutsu no Mori). I receive a souvenir from Gulliver (Johnny in the JP version) and show off my house, which is unfortunately packed to the rafters for maximum HRA points. Note the difference in speech from the English version. The speech in the Japanese version actually says what the animals say, albeit way too quickly to understand (sounds get skipped and so on).

*NOT* tool-assisted, though I actually recommend watching the tool-assisted version instead this time, as it's somewhat quicker and there aren't really any improvements here. As such, I have kept the Extra Stage playlist as is. I recorded this more than a week ago, but just now got around to uploading it. NOTE: You cannot actually get this ending more than once per file. I had (and still have) an SRM file with all levels finished except for EX-10, and used that to get it again.

The Pledge

Why I don't like the Pledge of Allegiance, with mostly irrelevant bonus Japanese fun facts and song. I decided to go electric this time; I found some chords to Kimigayo, but they didn't work very well, so I figured I'd just do the typical Japanese thing of playing the melody. It wasn't very audible on acoustic guitar, so electric it was. :) Ugh; I just watched this thing. Apologies for the synchronization problems as it gets toward the end. I tried uploading as an FLV this time, but it seems to have made no difference, and I guess the only thing to do from now on is to convert 29.97FPS videos to 30FPS. Oh well.

Umihara Kawase - Crappy Playing + Cheap Death F11

I did two runs of F11. The first one was pretty clumsy, and after watching it, I decided to do a total redo. But here's a fairly funny outtake from that run. Watching it now, it's fairly obvious that there were two puffs of dust, but at the moment, I figured I could proceed with reckless abandon. The teleporting enemies are easily the most annoying part of this game; I wish there were a difficulty setting to decrease their spawning rate or turn 'em off altogether. :/

Apologies for the fact that the video tends to freeze when I'm fast-forwarding the emulator. Thanks to YOTAoLDgAMEfOREST for finding the bulk of this strategy. This is probably basically how the level was intended to be solved (note that it NEVER requires red block placement more than 1/2 block space into any wall). The video is mildly tool-assisted (recorded at half speed with semi-frequent savestates) to save time, but it still takes forever, haha. I'm a little embarrassed that there are a few costly screwups in spite of it being tool-assisted, but oh well, I just wanted to show how it's done.

Umihara Kawase - Giant Tadpole F8

My first video in a while, and it's a gaming video. Anyway, inspired by BigAl2k6's "Take Two" video, I decided to make a video to show how a real no-talent non-speedrunner handles this boss (for those playing at home, the answer is "like a total wuss"). Still, it ended up being a good run with no major mistakes. I didn't even get hit by any frogs or let any through! Pretty good considering I was recording this using actual SFC hardware through VirtualDub and playing in a 320X240 window! I did lose four lives on the levels preceding this one though. :( Damn teleporting enemies... For a demonstration of the harder version of this boss, check out www.youtube.com Edit: www.youtube.com (this one's much more straightforward than the one above it) And for anyone wondering, I kinda put atheism videos on hold, as it takes so much time to record videos, and I'm not all that comfortable in front of a camera... Lower quality than the last one, I realize, but I didn't want to spend a bunch of time practicing this huge, mildly irritating stage [though I did redo this video when I figured out how it was probably intended to be done]. Hopefully anybody who's stuck on this stage can get the idea though. :P Previously, I completed this stage by making the second brick from the bottom stick out on both sides of the wall. It didn't seem very elegant, and indeed, I figured out that I could move blue for great justice. Richard Dawkins stumped by creationists' question?

Dawkins' response to Creationist bullshit (including the famous "stumped" video) at AAI '07. A more detailed response from Dawkins with regard to this video is as follows: "In September 1997, I allowed an Australian film crew [from the then Answers in Genesis] into my house in Oxford without realising that their purpose was creationist propaganda. In the course of a suspiciously amateurish interview, they issued a truculent challenge to me to "give an example of a genetic mutation or an evolutionary process which can be seen to increase the information in the genome." It is the kind of question only a creationist would ask in that way, and it was at this point I tumbled to the fact that I had been duped into granting an interview to creationists - a thing I normally don't do, for good reasons. In my anger I refused to discuss the question further, and told them to stop the camera. However, I eventually withdrew my peremptory termination of the interview as a whole. This was solely because they pleaded with me that they had come all the way from Australia specifically in order to interview me. Even if this was a considerable exaggeration, it seemed, on reflection, ungenerous to tear up the legal release form and throw them out. I therefore relented. My generosity was rewarded in a fashion that anyone familiar with fundamentalist tactics might have predicted. When I eventually saw the film a year later 1, I found that it had been edited to give the false impression that I ...

Sutte Hakkun すってはっくん EX-6 (tool-assisted)

At first, I thought that maybe this stage was completely impossible by design. I thought I'd have to get blue up to the top, but at the same time, I couldn't think of a way to do the top part without having all three blocks available - one clear, one red, and one blue. So then I thought, "well, maybe I can do it with yellow." That was the right answer. :) This is tool-assisted. There are some really hard jumps in this stage (especially the one from the yellow block to the red block toward the end), but maybe after practicing a bit on the actual console, I'll put up a legit run as well - hopefully I can keep it under 10 minutes! :)

Sutte Hakkun すってはっくん EX-5

Since I'm still stuck on EX-10, I figured I'd upload solutions for EX-2 through EX-5. All of these are tool-assisted in the sense of being recorded at half speed with occasional savestates. They're not particularly tricky stages (at least not compared to a couple of the later Extra stages, but recording them this way saves some time. Each of the vertical shafts in the first half of the stage has a different quirk. Be careful in the second one from the right - do not change the position of that lowest block (it should stay halfway through the floor at its lowest point) or you won't be able to come down. Also, if I seemed to spend a lot of time messing with the top block, it's because it has to rise at least slightly above the standing point at the top, or again you will be stuck. Likewise, the leftmost shaft is a little tricky, but basically, you have to get the blocks near the top so you can get down (and again, don't mess around with the lowest block until you're out).

This one is tool-assisted, because I don't think anybody wants to sit through the kind of quicksaving/quickloading required (for me, at least) to get this stage done. I suspect there's a more elegant solution than this pixel-perfect placement of the red brick, though I also think (counter-intuitive though it may seem due to the one-way passage beneath it) that you do have to get the upper-left rainbow shard first. I'm also wondering about the function of the second Makkun (if there is one aside from just being in the way). Any comments are appreciated. Count how many times I used Phoenix. :) I recorded a video with Geryon many months ago, but I couldn't kill Proto-Babil reliably and didn't make a video. I've found a strategy that works (and at least 75% of the credit goes to cnthwz), so I'm posting it now. Apologies that it's the Japanese version, but I don't have the US version. The core of this strategy is Focus x3 + Darkness + Jump (and that's what I got from cnthwz). As usual, I played this on a table at a weird viewing angle (due to the camera), and that's why I accidentally change rows and fail to notice that I used dead Cecil to change back, and also why everything's so slow (I could barely see the screen, and also had to be careful not to move my DS). Under normal playing conditions, you could probably shave a minute or a minute and a half off of this. Anyway...
