( PLEASE READ) If I were to get serious about flying FPV, I would buy the super equipment. But just to test it to see if I could do it, this is how it went. In reality, I would rather Watch my planes fly and leave the FPV stuff to the Military Drone Guys and those with the big bucks. Did you know to be insured by the AMA (what could go wrong) you need a spotter who can see the plane at all times in addition to you the pilot? Thats a lot of work. High power equipment is expensive and requires a special license too in most cases. So again, I did it the simple way, just to see if I could. The last few Quad-Copter videos I made were requests. If you want a really cheap 4-way diversity controller for FPV with RC planes then this project will do the job nicely. In this video I show you the unit working on the bench, actually switching between a commercial RC305 FPV receiver and my own DIY FPV receiver as the signal strength changes due to reflections when I move my hands near the antennas. Unfortunately I made a small error in the PC board layout so I'm etching up a new one and that will be published shortly on the RCModelReviews website. With the 5-turn helical antenna it's easy to get over 2KMs range with the 200mW 5.8GHz FPV backpack and using the diversity you can arrange multiple antennas to cover a wide sweep so as to enjoy the benefits of these hi-gain antennas without the risk of losing signal if you fly "out of the beam". Full constructional webpages and videos being edited up now for the FPV backpack, the DIY receiver and the DIY diversity board. Stay tuned.

I was amazed by the power and speed this stock setup offered. I am sure Lanyu has upgraded the motor on this one now. Now this is a great plane for FPV. Later on 2nd flight we tested our MRL3-OSD-G Stick and Fly FPV combo on this plane and I had fun doing FPV. I will set this bird up with MRL4-APOSD-G and go for some long range FPV soon. Snow Canyon is a unique location west of St. George Utah where Red Navajo Sandstone & bleached Navajo Sandstone combine to give a bit of illusion that the red stone has snow on it, even in 100 degree heat. The terrain is covered with giant black lava boulders and lava tubes. On the other side of the mountain from Snow Canyon is a beautiful area called Kayenta, which has some of the most spectacular cliffs I've ever seen. There are hundreds of pools on the bluff at the top of the cliffs, and during rainy season the pools turn into ponds & lakes. There are dozens of small pools in this video, see if you can find them all! I composed another original soundtrack for this video. This one with a Native American theme mixed with a bit of techno/soundtrack. Here are some basic flight maneuvers and aerobatics with the Axon FPV foamboard scratchbuilt. Video views of the maneuvers from the ground and from the FPV video link. Nothing too crazy as far as 3D aerobatics but a good start and a departure from the standard upright FPV flying around. Thanks to Chris R. for the superb videography through all the maneuvers! So far the Axon is proving to be an easy, forgiving platform for this type of flying. The thrust:weight ratio is .77:1 so it flies somewhat like a real plane - enough power to get out of trouble but not so much that it acts like a video game and just muscles through the maneuvers. You actually do need some energy management skills to successfully complete the maneuvers. See other Axon videos for more information on the plane itself as well as parts links. The FPV setup is a 5.8GHz 200mW transmitter and standard receiver from Hobbyking, using circularly polarized antennae (cloverleaf Tx, skew planar Rx) made to the design described by IBCrazy. Notice the reception is excellent in all flight attitudes during maneuvering. The FPV camera is a Sony 1/3" CCD board camera - works well, not great, price is right at $17 from HobbyKing. Recorded on a Sony PC110 Handycam, both the FPV received video and the direct ground video. Control via Spektrum DX7 and FPV pilot view through FatShark Aviators.
