December 28, 2009. This time-lapse video shows the entire day (3 hours and 49 minutes) in two minutes. It was shot one week after the actual Winter Solstice (the shortest day of the year in Earth's Northern Hemisphere on December 21). Only 100 miles from the Arctic Circle, this video looks south at the Alaska Mountain Range and shows sunrise through sunset. The Antonov 225, the world's largest airplane (that actually flies), lands in Fairbanks, Alaska on 2/9/10 for refueling while on a flight to deliver disaster relief supplies from Japan to Haiti. This plane was built to transport the Soviet Union's "Buran" space shuttle. The Buran is long gone but now you can rent the 225 to transport large cargo.
Douglas Fairbanks set the blueprint for every Hollywood action hero that came after him, from Clark Gable and Errol Flynn in the 1930s, to Sean Connery, Harrison Ford and Hugh Jackman in more recent times. He was charismatic, romantic, and naturally athletic, performing all of his own stunts and specialising in high-quality action films. These were often set in historical periods, which allowed them to include lavish costumes, action-packed set pieces, and lots of swashbuckling! Offscreen, his life was almost as much of a storybook as it was on. I made a homemade Fairbanks Morse Garden Tractor. As you can see it works great for plowing. It has hydraulics and a sleeve hitch. There is an easy way to build this kind of tractor and the hard way. The easy way is to get an existing garden tractor and swap engines. That would've satisfy me, so I did it the hard way: I bought a welder and learned how to weld on this tractor. The frame is hand built from angle iron. Be sure to use truss ideas and gussets to make the frame strong. The rear cast iron transaxle is from a 60s Gilson, its a Peerless 4 speed with a tillage gear. Those peerless 4 speeds were made for many many years and are extremely common, used on JD, Case, etc. Do not use a aluminum transmission. The torque from the Fairbanks will tear it apart. The steering column & sector is from a JD but it is the same kind used on many garden tractors, like Cub Cadet, etc... The front end is from a Case and is cast iron. The tie rods and linkage is from a Allis Chalmers. The rear wheels are from a JD pull behind plow. You may think the 2hp engine is only "2hp". But it has tons of torque. My 2hp dishpan has the same torque as a 12hp Kohler (Cub Cadet) garden tractor. When plowing new soil and snagging a tree root, I've broken plows with my "vintage" garden tractor.

The design originated in 1914. This design is from about 1920. Gradual improvements were made until it was phased out in the mid 1930's. Wings on the pistons to help air circulation were deleted in 1928 when the compression was raised. Power on this type of engine reached 70 HP per cylinder These engines could be ordered with 1 to 9 cylinders. Generator: Fairbanks Morse 28 pole, 100kW, three phase, 440 volt AC. The information above is taken almost word for word from the paper that was put up by the musem describing the engine. This video was shot during the 11am. startup of the engine on Sat. June 26, 2010 at the Antique Gas & Steam Engine Museum in Vista, CA. The other engine toward the end of the video is a straight six Enterprise diesel that was used as a backup power supply at the Palomar Observatory on Mt. Palomar, CA. I did not get the specs for this engine.
