New York City Rooftop Farm
It's got a view to die for. Rooftop Farms atop a warehouse in Brooklyn grow more than 30 varieties of organic fruits and vegetables, including heirloom tomatoes, zucchini, aubergines and green onions. While green roofs are nothing new, the sheer scale of the farm in the heart of one of the world's most congested cities is impressive. Lisa Goode is the owner of Rooftop Farms. [Lisa Goode, Owner, Rooftop Farms]: "There's layers of drainage mat and separation fabric — it's all very technical stuff that the dirt actually just goes right on top of. And then you grow stuff in the dirt. But most importantly, a green roof has great environmental benefits such as storm-water reduction, which is a huge problem in New York City. There's cooling for the building and if we can amass enough green roofs, hopefully it will help the heat island issue in New York City too." The biggest problem with designing green roofs, Goode says, is convincing developers they are a good idea. She says there is a misguided perception that they can damage a building's roof. The reverse is true, she says. Greenery can protect a roof membrane from the damaging effects of the sun and cold weather. Andy Darrell, Regional Manager of the Environmental Defense Fund, says another benefit of Rooftop Farms is that it lowers the carbon footprint caused by trucks used to transport food into the city. This video was originally shot in August 2009. A student from The POINT's ACTION program brought copies with him when he visited Michelle Obama's organic garden at the White House later that month. A version of this video then debuted at the South Bronx Food & Film Expo on December 5th, 2009 at The POINT and was also screened during the opening of the first ever Bronx Food Summit hosted by Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. on May 1st, 2010. A month later it was a part of the Sustainable Planet Film Series in Manhattan and has been shown at numerous events and classrooms across NYC and nationally. It has since given birth to a new, wholly inclusive, Bronx Borough-wide educational/vocational initiative: Green Bronx Machine. A few years ago i went over to South Dakota in the US.with 12 other dairy farmers from UK & Ireland to see dairy farms and cheese plants in the Sioux Falls area (Along the Interstate 29). We were guests of SD Min of AGriculture. The SD government wanted UK and Irish farmers to build new dairy farms on green field sites- Minimum size - 500 cows up to 2500 cows or more. The State required 65.000 more cows to supply cheese plants.

Obama To End Family Farms
DOT To Mandate All Farm Vehicles Require CDL Licenses, Could Bring Demise To Farmers In Late May, the DOT proposed a rule change for farm equipment, and if it this allowed to take effect, it will place significant regulatory pressure on small farms and family farms all across America -- costing them thousands of dollars and possibly forcing many of them out of business. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA), part of the Department of Transportation (DOT), wants new standards that would require all farmers and everyone on the farm to obtain a CDL (Commercial Drivers License) in order to operate any farming equipment. The agency is going to accomplish this by reclassifying all farm vehicles and implements as Commercial Motor Vehicles (CMVs). (It is also important to note here that DOT Secretary Ray LaHood holds a seat on the newly created White House Rural Council. A powerful group whose members have ties to George Soros and The Center For American Progress.) The move by the DOT appears to be "legislation through regulation." By reclassifying all farm vehicles and implements as Commercial Vehicles, the federal government will now be able to claim regulatory control over the estimated 800000 farm workers in America, at the same time, overriding the rights of the states. The proposed change also means ANYONE driving a tractor or operating any piece of motorized farming equipment would be forced to pass the same rigorous tests and fill out the same detailed <b>...</b>
