It was popularized by Roberta Flack and became a breakout hit for the singer after it appeared in the 1971 Clint Eastward film Play Misty for Me. Though the song first appeared on Flack's 1969 album First Take, it topped the Billboard Hot 100 and won the Grammy Award for Song of the Year three years later.

Remember when Soul Music had artists who made songs so beautiful you would shed tears. Well here is one for your heart , soul and mind when Black Artists made music so deep that the earth would spin on it's axis. "The Closer I Get to You" is a song performed originally during 1978 by Roberta Flack and Donny Hathaway. The song was written by keyboardist James Mtume and guitarist Reggie Lucas, two former members of Miles Davis' band who were members of Flack's band at the time. Released from Flack's album, Blue Lights in the Basement, it became a major crossover hit. It scored two weeks as number one on the Hot Soul Singles chart in April, 1978, and also peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100. [1]. It was eventually certified gold. Flack is best known for her Hot 100 #1 singles "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face", "Killing Me Softly with His Song", and "Feel Like Makin' Love", as well as "Where Is the Love" and "The Closer I Get to You", two of her many duets with Donny Hathaway. "The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face" won the 1973 Grammy Record of the Year, and "Killing Me Softly with His Song" won the same award at the Grammy Awards of 1974.[1] She and U2 are the only artists to win the award in back-to-back years.
