King Penguin Harassed by Fur Seal Pups on S. Georgia

A lone King penguin, just out of the water with a very full belly, has to cross through a large Fur Seal colony to get to the King nesting area. This was shot at about 8:00 pm at Right Whale Bay, South Georgia Island, on January 6, 2010. Our ship, Polar Star, is visible in the background. Cheesemans' Ecology Safaris was the expedition - wonderful! Go to www.stevegouldphotography.com to see beautiful photos from Antarctica, South Georgia and The Falklands. Henry Wood Elliott: Defender of the Fur Seal

In the twenty years following the United States' acquisition of the Alaska territory (1867), revenues from the Pribilof Island fur seal harvest paid off the 7.2 million dollar purchase price. This documentary uncovers this little-known piece of American history told through the story of Henry Wood Elliott, an artist and naturalist who produced some of the earliest images of the Pribilof fur seal harvest, wrote the first detailed account of the northern fur seal's life history, and who many regard as the man who saved the northern fur seal from extinction. This award-winning film was produced for NOAA and by Paul Hillman as his MFA thesis film in Science and Natural History Filmmkaing at Montana State University - Bozeman. This film has been recognized in the following ways: 2005-2006 College Television Awards (aka Student Emmys) -2nd Place Documentary -Bricker Family Award for humanitarian concern 2006 International Wildlife Film Festival -Best Government Agency Program -Merit Award for Photography -Merit Award for Cultural Telly Awards -Silver Telly for Documentary -Bronze Telly for Student Film Gold Aurora Award for Student Film

northern fur seal pup conservation research

These northern fur seal pups are training to become assistant researchers at the Vancouver Aquarium The University of British Columbia (UBC) Marine Mammal Research Unit, in collaboration with the Aquarium, is finding out why the northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) population is declining in Alaska's Pribilof Islands. These pups are joining the Steller sea lions in this important, long-term study. The sea lions have been assisting in this research at the Aquarium since 1993. The success of the sea lion research program now allows for a study of the decline in population of the northern fur seals. "We know their numbers are getting smaller, but we don't have the data to determine why. Is their decline related to nutrition or is it associated with changes in the north Pacific as the oceans have become warmer?" asks Dr. Andrew W. Trites, Director of UBC's marine Mammal Research Unit. "We believe the six fur seal pups may hold the key to unlocking this ecological mystery. The pups are vital to the conservation of fur seals and will participate in studies that can only be accomplished with trained animals in a controlled setting." The fur seals are in this temporary holding area while they get used to their new home and are being closely monitored by the Aquarium's veterinary team. If you're wondering what part of the Aquarium this is, it's the area where the researchers conduct some of their work - you're getting a behind-the-scenes peek. Playful Antarctic Fur Seal Pups

The Antarctic island of South Georgia is home to an estimated 4 million Antarctic fur seals, approximately 95% of the world population. These eared seals usually hunt the rich waters for krill during the night, but they also eat fish, squid and sometimes penguins! Fur seals in the breeding season

At the height of the fur seal breeding season the beaches around the sub-antarctic island of South Georgia are thick with seals. Mature males round the females up into harems. The pups explore the area whilst their mothers are at sea feeding before returning to suckle the pup. The males mate the females when they return. Looking down on the water from the cliffs, see the seal ballet as those not breeding socialise and play. This video is attached to the monthly South Georgia newsletter on www.sgisland.gs

Anabelle and Dandelion, two of the first northern fur seals of the season, shown being rehabilitated November 2007 at The Marine Mammal Center in Sausalito. Anabelle has the distinction of being the smallest animal The Marine Mammal Center has ever treated on site! Fur seals are known and named for their thick fur, which has 300000 hairs per square inch. The full range of the northern fur seal extends throughout the Pacific rim from Japan to the Channel Islands of California. Once hunted in large numbers for their pelts, northern fur seals are now protected under the Marine Mammal Protection Act as a depleted species. Copyright The Marine Mammal Center. Annoying fur seals on South Georgia island (Dutch spoken)

Fur seals (pelsrobben in Dutch) are the most abundant animal on the subantarctic island of South Georgia. They can be very naughty and annoying as well, since they're very territorial. But then again, it is their island and humans are just guests here! An estimated number of 3 million fur seals on the island, spread over 1500 km of beaches suggests there are around 2 animals per meter of beach on the island!!! South Georgia lays in the south Atlantic Ocean and is permanently inhabited by a group of scientists and personnel from the British Antarctic Survey. We (Pete, Danny and Maarten) visited for 1,5 month on the yacht Kiwiroa during the austral summer of 2010. The video was taken near one of the old and abandoned whaling stations on the island.

New Zealand Fur Seals - Macquarie Island

This footage was shot by Rick Besso on Hi8 around Macquarie Island. In the 1800's the fur seals were hunted to extinction. Recently New Zealand fur seals have moved back in and re-colonised the place. The boys are a bit aggressive (don't get between them and the water) but the girls seem to like people. Edited and uploaded by Hullwarren.

Seal Attack

Seal attack. Here not the usual shark attack or lion attack but something slightly in between. I get attacked by a fur seal. Fur seals have very horrible saliva and if they bite your arm or leg then you have to take some serious antibiotics to stave off infection. In the old days of sealing and whaling if they got bitten you had to take the infected area off. ie cut an arm or leg off. Here in Antarctica Fur seals are very aggressive and have no fear of people or machinery.

The Nambian Seal Cull

Cape fur seals, also known as South African fur seals, historically inhabited the islands off the coast of South Africa. But overhunting and harassment from humans have forced them from the islands and onto the mainlan d of Namibia and South Africa. Now, the Cape fur seals are threatened by a commercial hunt that grows larger every year. Namibia is the only country in the Cape fur seal's range in which commercial hunting is permitted. Sealing occurs on two mainland colonies, Cape Cross and Wolf/Atlas Bay, where 75 percent of the pups are born. From July 1 through Nov. 15, commercial hunters hire approximately 160 part-time workers to kill the seals, most pups between the ages of 7 and 11 months. Hunters club the pups on the head with large, ice-pick-like clubs, and then stab them in the heart. The much larger bulls are shot. Despite a declining population of Cape fur seals and high mortality rates among the seal population, the hunting quota increases every year. Cape fur seals are listed on Appendix II of the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Species on Appendix II are not threatened with extinction, but their survival is dependent on conservation measures. The hunt in Namibia is the second largest commercial seal hunt in the world, and it would not comply with most other nations' laws protecting marine mammals. It is inhumane and unsustainable. Its high quotas are non-precautionary and violate modern basic ...

EXPEDITION: Elephant seal comes for a closer look

Visit www.earth-touch.com for a closer look at the wonders of the natural world. After our fantastic morning at Fortuna Bay we sailed east to King Edward Point, Grytviken, where we would anchor for most of the night next to the research station set up in this natural harbour at South Georgia in the South Atlantic. This is where the Antarctic explorer Edward Shackleton is buried a place that is incredible in its beauty. It holds somewhat grim reminders of the history that started this tiny settlement. On one side of the bay sits a rusting and ramshackle skeleton of an old whaling station; huge piles of reddened chains bear testimony to the thousands of whales that were processed here. Now, King Edward Point is devoted entirely to scientific research much of which will go towards preserving the whale and seal species whose numbers were previously so reduced. We were once again lucky with the weather. Apart from the occasional snow squall, the sun was out, still above the high mountains ringing the bay and sparking off the numerous icebergs. A breathtaking place. On the lower slopes tussock grass provided a little shelter for hundreds of Antarctic fur seals (Arctocephalus gazella) and the beaches were dotted with the liquid-eyed elephant seals (Mirounga leonina). Crew member Pierre Minnie and I went out on a Zodiac boat towards an iceberg, hoping that the water would be calm enough for us to film the intricacies and colours of these huge blocks of ice.
