Beethoven - Symphony 9 - Furtwangler - BPO - March 1942

Tilla Briem (Soprano) Elisabeth Hongen (Alto) Peter Anders (Tenor) Rudolf Watzke (Bass) Bruno Kittel Choir 1942.3.22-24 Berlin www.youtube.com From: thebetterpartofvalour.wordpress.com Berlin, 1942 What a different world is this. It is the time of Hitler's birthday, 24th March. Among the audience are Himmler, the chief of the SS, and Goebbels, master propagandist. From the very first bars, the orchestra cries: We are lost! No light hearts, only sad memories. Wildness, abandonment, a sense of being caught up in the sweep of events that no-one could control -- almost the hopelessness of being only human. The orchestra gives us jagged edges of violence, but also moments of reflection. The drums roll on, steady, purposeful, heavy with dread. There is a sense of watching unimaginable horror, with stoicism, with numbness. Whilst we're periodically overwhelmed, there is at other times a sense of frozen, appalled aloofness, of detachment. This is the most perfectly crafted symphonic performance you will ever hear. Indeed, it is not "crafted" at all. It emerges from the roots of experience, the condition of the time. It is a long scream at the world for being the world, broken off at the end of every movement, then taken up again. Ego is forgotten, and art seamlessly reflects the actuality of the real. The orchestra under Furtwangler are responding to something beyond and behind them: the beating of the wings of the angel of death, perched that night on the roof of the Philhamonie ...

Wagner - RIDE OF THE VALKYRIES - Furtwangler

The Ride of the Valkyries, by Richard Wagner, in a classic recording with Wilhelm Furtwangler and the Vienna Philharmonic. Illustrations are by Arthur Rackham. "One golden summer in adolescence...I heard the 'Ride of the Valkyries' on a gramophone and saw Arthur Rackham's illustrations to The Ring." (CSLewis) The music: probably the most famous and instantly identifiable of Wagner's works is this short orchestral prelude from Die Walkure, the second opera in the monumental Der Ring des Nibelungen. It has gone on to enter popular culture, being used in many films, most notably the helicopter attack sequence in Apocalypse Now. In terms of composition it perfectly demonstrates Wagner's epic sense of drama, and also his masterful orchestration. The conductor: Wilhelm Furtwangler is probably unrivalled as an interpreter of the core Austro-German Romantic repertoire, setting benchmarks in the performance of Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Wagner, Bruckner and others. His recordings include two complete Ring Cycles, both of them classics. The illustrations: Arthur Rackham was one of the greatest illustrators at the turn of the 19th century, creating classic visions for fairy tales and fantasies (Alice, Peter Pan, etc.). His work on Der Ring des Nibelungen is often considered one of the finest visual depictions of Wagner's epic. Sound: sorry the quality isn't first class - the recording is nearly sixty years old! Conducted by Daniel Barenboim with the Chicago Symphony Orchestra. I. Assai Moderato - 00:00 II. Andante Semplice - 23:06 III. Un Poco Moderato - 36:04 IV. Langsan - 51:51 As a composer Wilhelm Furtwängler was only too well aware of the probable prejudices he would encounter. The "world", he wrote in his Notebooks, would not take "seriously" the compositions of one known for 35 years as a conductor. He adds his own view of himself as, from the outset of his career, a conducting composer rather than a composing conductor. Another problem arose from criticism that accused him of rejecting contemporary music wholesale, a charge he indignantly rejects, while insisting that the future lay with tonality, rather than with the eclectic individualism that he certainly found unsatisfactory. Universal things, he wrote in 1940, can only be said in a universal language. The second of Furtwängler's three completed symphonies was written in 1944 and 1945 and first performed under his direction at a concert given by the Berlin Philharmonic Orchestra in February 1948. The closing years of the war and its aftermath had brought many difficulties and Furtwängler had only been allowed to resume his career as a conductor in 1947. The new symphony, which he conducted on a number of occasions in the following years, justifies clearly enough his view of himself as before all else a composer, compelled initially to turn to conducting as a way of earning a living. The work reflects his own views of ...

Beethoven/Furtwängler - Symphony No. 3 in E flat major ("Eroica"), Op. 55: 1st mvt

Ludwig van Beethoven (1770-1827) Symphony No. 3 in E flat major ("Eroica"), Op. 55 (1804) 1. Allegro con brio Performed by the Vienna Philharmonic under Wilhelm Furtwängler (1886-1954), 19-20 December 1944. "The Third, Fifth, and Ninth Symphonies were the works of Beethoven that formed leitmotifs that reverberated throughout Furtwängler's career. He returned to them time and again in an attempt to find the ideal proportions for their anguish, depth, power, and anger. Historically, the Eroica symbolized the new European spirit--"liberty, equality, fraternity"--that rang out in the wake of Napoleon's campaigns. Though Beethoven became disenchanted with Napoleon the man, he still held dear the principles that had launched his march across Europe. The Eroica, like the times in which it was molded, is infused with revolution. Nothing had been created in music before that was as harmonically craggy and as abrasive and relentless. "Unlike Toscanini, to whom the Eroica was only allegro con brio, Furtwängler clearly shows how profoundly the music spoke to him of issues and ideas; in comparison, musical matters seemed almost secondary. Yet the impulsive way Furtwängler conducts the first allegro of the Eroica might suggest at first that he and Toscanini were not so far apart, at least in matters of tempo when it came to this pivotal work (when the timings of their commercial recordings are compared, Furtwängler is usually about a minute or two longer than Toscanini, particularly in ...
