Futurism - The Dead Movement That Lives

A University of Toronto research assignment. This film explores Futurism, its manifestos and the relationship that modern Science-Fiction illustration and cinema have with futurist imagery. This film demonstrates that futurism is not a dead movement because futurist inspirations are used widely in the modern world.

Ray Kurzweil - Futurist

[Recorded July 13 2009] Ray Kurzweil is a 21st century polymath. He is a scientist, inventor, entrepreneur, author, visionary and futurist. As a scientist and inventor he has pioneered work in optical character recognition (OCR), speech recognition technology, and electronic keyboard instruments. As an entrepreneur, Kurzweil has founded businesses in the fields of OCR, music synthesis, speech recognition, reading technology, virtual reality and financial investment. He is the author of numerous books on health, artificial intelligence (AI), the technological singularity and futurism. The Kurzweilian version of the future is the inevitable merger of humans and intelligent machines. In this discussion with Computer History Museum Senior Curator Dag Spicer, Kurzweil shares his vision of how technology will re-shape the human body (and culture generally) into one that incorporates advanced technologies into a new type of post-human organism. Kurzweil sees this transformation occurring over the next 20 to 50 years and beginning with the integration of electronic-based systems into the human body. Some decades after that, a further transformation occurs--one based on nanotechnology—which incorporates the manipulation and construction of interfaces and complex systems based on atomic-level structures that merge with and control specific bodily functions and attack its problems (ie cancer). Some of the philosophical implications of Kurzweils vision are also discussed.

Italian Futurism Tribute

A short user-made video tribute to the modernist art movement Futurism, featuring the music of Trance Opera, Chariots of the Sun. "Futurism was an artistic and social movement that originated in Italy in the early 20th century. The founder of Futurism and its most influential personality was the Italian writer Filippo Tommaso Marinetti. Marinetti expressed a passionate loathing of everything old, especially political and artistic tradition. "We want no part of it, the past", he wrote, "we the young and strong Futurists!" The Futurists admired speed, technology, youth and violence, the car, the airplane and the industrial city, all that represented the technological triumph of humanity over nature, and they were passionate nationalists. They repudiated the cult of the past and all imitation, praised originality, "however daring, however violent", bore proudly "the smear of madness", dismissed art critics as useless, rebelled against harmony and good taste, swept away all the themes and subjects of all previous art, and gloried in science. Futurism influenced many other twentieth century art movements, including Art Deco, Vorticism, Constructivism, Surrealism and Dada. Futurism as a coherent and organized artistic movement is now regarded as extinct, having died out in 1944 with the death of its leader Marinetti, and Futurism was, like science fiction, in part overtaken by 'the future'. Nonetheless the ideals of futurism remain as significant components of modern Western ...

Like most the stuff I upload, this has a now non-existent DnB sound. Not that I don't like the new tunes mind you, it's just DnB evolves so fast, that in a few short years, the sound is no longer the same. This Is Jungle Sky Vol. 6 was the first DnB album I bought, so I hold a special place for it. Well anyway, enjoy.

The Neo-Futurists

Chicago's Neo-Futurists are a collective of writer/performers who create postmodern theater that is "a fusion of sport, poetry, and living-newspaper." This experimental theater company has been performing their signature show Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind since 1988, making it the longest running show in Chicago today. Too Much Light..., offering a constantly-changing "menu," is an effort to perform 30 plays in 60 minutes. With a rotating cast of ensemble members, these artists claim the unifying element of their plays is that they are offered from personal experience and thusly, a place of absolute honesty. All shows are typically performed weekend evenings at The Neo-Futurarium on Chicago's North Side, with the price of admission always $7 +$1 times the roll of a single six-sided die. On October 18 2007, the Neo-Futurists performed Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind: The Poetry Plays at The Poetry Center of Chicago, melding their high-energy show with quiet poetics to transcendent effect.

Bruce Sterling. Historical Narrative, Futurism and Emergent Network Culture. 2010

www.egs.edu Bruce Sterling, noted critic, science fiction writer and net theorist, lecturing on historical narrative, futurism and the emergent network culture. In this lecture Bruce Sterling discusses the (r)evolution of historical narrative in the context of contemporary and evolving network culture. He ponders the trans-temporal and trans-cultural effects of network culture in relation to cultural signifiers and rhizomatic subversions of postmodern culture, focusing on the collapse of historical narrative embedded in a disintegrating digital culture. He brings to light a philosophy of history that is evolving towards an atemporal condition of the emergent net culture, relegated to a dissipation of time-bound origins and identities. Citing the likes of Slavoj Zizek, William Gibson, and Arthur Kroker, Bruce Sterling invites us to re-shift a framework in understanding the nature of history, preempting a retrospective futurism, one that begs for accountability, consequences and a future history in the context of its rapidly evolving fragmented, hyper-linked, cross-referenced and anecdotal systems of history. Public open lecture for the students and faculty of the European Graduate School EGS Media and Communication Studies department program Saas-Fee Switzerland Europe. June 2010. Bruce Sterling. Bruce Sterling is an Austin-born (April 14th 1954) science fiction writer and Net critic, internationally recognized as a cyberspace theorist who is also still based there ...

The First 5 Times (Russian Futurists remix)

The first time, in your backyard Underneath the plastic sheeting Outside, it was pouring And we were drunk as shit Next time, at a party When all our friends were there There's nothing like their mattresses Underneath the stairs The third time, in a doorway With the lights all on around us And the audience beside us And the old man watching from a tree Fourth time, I said that's that You've agreed to give me everything Now I've got to ask you one more thing Keep doing that forever Fifth time in your bedroom And finally, we rested And you leaned upon your elbow And began to speak to me But you stopped yourself and kissed me And I grabbed your lips and told you I know, I know, I know I feel the same as you And everyday, it's changed since then In every way, I've changed since then And everyday, it's changed since then In every way, I've changed since then
