Reflections from the Outside - Germany - January 2006

Handicapped artist Josef Hofer is at the forefront of the Outsider Art movement. He has won the Euward award for his depictions of male eroticism. "Outsiders are artistic people who have some kind of handicap", explains Arnulf Rainer. Hofer's childhood was spent in tragic isolation where he found a creative outlet through his painting. His work is a prime example of L'Art Brut. This movement recognises art that arises spontaneously from an individual's creative power rather than being shaped by cultural influences. Dylan Moran on Germany

Dylan Moran goes off on Germany and the Germans. Comments deactivated again, as it didn't stay civil. Oh angry mob, the wisdom of your pitchforks knows no bounds. Also, the rampant stupidity makes me weep mindpoop into my brainpants. Note: it's comedy, he's satirizing prejudice in his signature surreal style. As George Carlin once said. "I think it's the duty of the comedian to find out where the line is drawn and cross it deliberately". This segment of his routine is bookended by Moran going off on one about Australia, America and the Irish. If you like it, buy the DVD "Like Totally". It's a comic juxtaposition, a volte face, he sets up the premise of prejudice, indulges in it, riffs and applies surreal imagery to his ludicrous posit with whiffs of reality mixed with stereotype. He plays on the stereotypes, daubs them with his own turn of phrase and pushes them out the other side as uncomfortable but entertaining similes. Simple really. If you don't quit posting dumb shit that's easy fodder. Blatantly racist comments will be deleted immediately. If you can't conduct a debate or resist spelling like a dyslexic 11-year old, I will delete all your comments and add you to the ever-expanding Blocked Users List. Y'see, the comments to this post are borderline symphonic; some stretches demonstrate an inspired genius and then you get the swingback, lots of peeps shouting "Hurensohn" and other tucknuttery that I will delete. German clashes: May Day rallies turn violent in Berlin

Left wing protesters clashed with police in Berlin as a traditional May Day demonstration came to a halt far before reaching its intended end in the city center. Some demonstrators threw stones, bottles and firecrackers at the riot police, and officers responded with charges and batons. Arrests were made. The thousands strong demonstration had set off late on Tuesday afternoon from Berlin's neighborhood of Kreuzberg. Meanwhile in Hamburg, over one-thousand leftist activists gathered for the annual May Day protest march, local media reported. The demonstration - themed "No Alternative to Revolution" - saw protesters marching from St. Pauli to Ottensen. Right at the start, protesters threw fireworks at police officers, but the crowd remained mostly calm for the ensuing march. However, after a speech marking the end of the demonstration, violence erupted. Stones and bottles were thrown at the policemen escorting the march. Police responded employing pepper spray and arresting several protesters. Injuries were reported on both sides. Later on, riots broke out in Hamburg's Schanzenviertel neighborhood, a notorious site for May Day violence in past years. RT on Twitter twitter.com RT on Facebook www.facebook.com

Power Play - Germany

Germany's green revolution stifled by subsidy cuts For downloads and more information visit: www.journeyman.tv Follow us on Facebook (goo.gl or Twitter (www.twitter.com In villages across Germany the people have seized power by generating enough renewable energy to supply their needs. But with the government cutting subsidies to small producers will this green revolution run out of steam? Following the Chernobyl disaster a community around Schönau in the Black Forest decided to buy their local plant and turn it into a co-operative. Now the villagers power themselves with solar or wind energy and then sell the excess to the national grid. "We started because we wanted to help, but then it became ecoomically interesting for all those who invested." After the Fukishima incident, President Merkel pledged to close the country's nuclear reactors and naturally, this boosted interest in the Schönau scheme. However, the government recently announced a 30% reduction in subsidies to small energy producers, stifling similar green communities across the country. "The phasing out of nuclear energy cannot be achieved without subsidising renewable energy". As anger amongst environmental activists swells, has the influence of large energy companies again infected national politics? A Film By SBS Distributed By Journeyman Pictures April 2012

Germany to Make History With Alternative Energy

Here's a "tale of two cities" - or two countries, actually. Germany and the United States. One country is preparing for a future in which their children will breathe clean air and lead the worlds economy - and the other is preparing for a future in which their children will choke on polluted air - and fall behind the rest of the world in the global economy. Can you guess which is which? Germany just announced a $260 billion investment in new energy - that's 8% of their GDP - with a goal of getting 80% of their nation's energy from wind and solar. This is the largest investment in energy that Germany has made since World War 2 - and they're even making this investment right in the middle of the financial crisis sweeping Europe - because Germany "gets it." No nation in the history of the world has ever cut its way to prosperity - just look at Greece. So Germany knows that the only way to get out of this crisis - is to GROW their way out of it - to come out in the end of it a better, stronger, and wealthier nation - through government investments in the future. Germany is going to build offshore wind farms - covering an area six-times larger than the size of New York City. They're going to put up thousands and thousands of miles in new power lines to modernize their energy grid - enough new smartgrid power lines that, if they were stretched out in a single line, would reach from London all the way to Baghdad. And, prompted by the Fukushima disaster in Japan last year ...

'Germans dare Greeks to kickstart Euro exit'

Violent austerity protests have erupted in the Italian city of Naples, after enraged demonstrators attempted to storm a local tax office. Protesters threw paint and rocks at police, who then charged crowds and beat them with batons. The demonstration began after the tax office refused to shut down for a period of mourning in the wake of a man's suicide after a visit by tax collecters. This, as Europe experiences new tensions stemming from a deadlocked government in Greece. Germany, though, is already guarding against any possible fallout, saying the Euro could survive with or without Greece. Solar Energy in Germany

12 years have passed since the German parliament adopted the "Renewable Energy Sources Act" on the 29th March of 2000 . This law was primarily developed by Hermann Scheer who developed the underlying concepts during the late 1980s and early 1990s. Up until his death in 2010, Dr. Scheer was one of the most significant and uncompromising proponents of renewable energy sources in Germany and around the world. The law that gave priority to renewable energy sources, guaranteed access to the grid for renewables and included a comprehensive feed-in-tarrif system became known as "Scheers-Law" around the world. Today it has been introduced to some extent by over 60 countries and states around the globe. Since this historic push for a 100% renewable energy supply began, there have been countless developements & success stories in the field of clean energy & energy efficency around the world. But the most important success of "Scheers-Law" is without doubt the commercialization of photovoltaic technology. In the middle of the last decade many companies around the world started to massivly expand their production capacity for silicon & other materials required to make PV-solar systems. This solar gold rush that lead to investments around the globe was mainly driven by demand in Germany up untill recently. The first effects of this developement? Since 2009 the prices for PV-solar systems have fallen by up to 70% and continue to decline. Today industry experts claim that photovoltaic ...

"Germany is dominating Europe"

Pulling the strings - Nigel Farage says political puppets are being put into place across the Euro zone. Transcript of speech: "Here we are on the edge of a financial and social disaster and in the room today we have the four men who are supposed to be responsible. And yet we have listened to the dullest most, technocratic speeches I've ever heard. You are all in denial. By any objective measure the euro is a failure. And who exactly is responsible, who is in charge out of all you lot? The answer is none of you because none of you have been elected; none of you have any democratic legitimacy for the roles you currently hold within this crisis. And into this vacuum, albeit reluctantly, has stepped Angela Merkel. And we are now living in a German-dominated Europe - something that the European project was actually supposed to stop. Something that those who went before us actually paid a heavy price in blood to prevent. I don't want to live in a German-dominated Europe and nor do the citizens of Europe. But you guys have played a role, because when Mr Papandreou got up and used the word 'referendum' - or Mr Rehn, you described it as 'a breach of confidence', and your friends here got together like a pack of hyenas, rounded on Papandreou, had him removed and replaced by a puppet Government. What an absolutely disgusting spectacle that was. And not satisfied with that, you decided that Berlesconi had to go. So he was removed and replaced by Mr Monti, a former European ...

But the packaging often contains dangerous toxins that can enter the food chain and pose serious health risks. All over the world the same products are shipped into our supermarket chains. They are made to last as long as possible and look as eye catching as they can - presentation is everything. But food scientists are sounding the alarm bells. Packaging often contains dangerous toxins that can seep into the food it is meant to protect. Only a few of these toxins are known to us and only a few have been tested for their possible effects on human health. "I estimate that various types of packaging contain about 100000 substances in a concentration that could well be relevant" says food chemist, Dr Konrad Grob. Despite hundreds of studies highlighting possible health risks such as hormonal imbalances and infertility, the EU has been unable to protect consumers. "It's a complicated issue. You've got lots of different national administrations, national legislations, different cultures", says Joe Hennon, a spokesperson for the European Commission for Environment. Germany 20 years after Berlin wall: Eurinfo

For 28 years the Berlin wall did so much more than cut a city in two. It cut the continent, it cut the world... into east, and west, and capitalism versus communism. Cold concrete, steel wire... symbolised cold war, sorrow, and political passion. The world changed suddenly 20 years ago. It was as if the dividing stones dissolved. The night the wall tumbled, chip by chip, the ninth of November, Communist Germany's television announcer Günther KUNERT slept badly, shaken. Then, as floodlights and torches gave way to daylight, he joined countless others streaming to see the long-forbidden west.
